Just minutes to Biwako Valley ski and scenic resort, we are surrounded by nature. Lake views are lovely--and on the right mornings, breathtaking. We are raising ducks and chickens and growing many fruit trees. Guests can hike, bicycle, or relax on nearby Lake Biwa beaches or get to Kyoto within 35 minutes. We moved into our newly built house in 2016. We are about 1 km from Horai station. Guests share the house with myself, wife, two sons (11 & 13) and friendly dogs. Breakfast included.

If you want to enjoy bit of local life, we would def recommend staying at John and Rika's place at the bottom of Mt Horai. John picked us up from Horai station when we arrived and was willing to drop us and pick us up anytime during our stay alike. Upon our arrival Rika served us a wonderful meal. And so she did the day after, when we sat down with them and their friends. It felt like staying at your family's house, finding yourself back in your old room. John, Rika, Vincent and Andre are the kind of people that know how to make you feel at home. Only small point of criticism would be the beds. If you're not used to futons the beds are quite hard. So if you have back problems, this is maybe not the best place for you. Other than that it was a great experience.

Response from John:
To clarify, Miriam meant she felt the futons were quite hard. We don't, at this point, offer beds to guests. One of the reasons I've loved sleeping on futons since coming to Japan in 1997 was because the firmness is great for my lower back (lumbar) pain, so I guess it depends on the particulars of your back problem!

This family is very accommodating and we enjoyed staying with them! Rika is an amazing cook and they were great hosts. We were grateful John gave us a ride to the house when we first arrived or else it may have been difficult to find.

It was really a wonderful stay. John picked us up from the station, the house was very nice and both John and Rika were very welcoming. We walked to Biwako lake during our stay and jumped into the lake swimming like all the locals. John did recommend us to a very amazing place (I am not sure if the name is called Horai mountain national park or not) which is about max 10minutes driving distance from John's house. you can take the cable car going to the mountain peak to enjoy a panoramic view of entire Biwako lake and whole area. You should spend at least half day there (we actually went there twice during our short stay). In winter the place will turn into ski place. In general it was truly a wonderful stay, thank you John for having us, thanks Rika for cooking us such delicious meals, kid made good friends within such a short stay too! We will definitely come back again, hopefully can be in winter for skiing.

John and Rita and their family were very hospitable and I enjoyed my stay. Communication was prompt and helpful. They gave great recommendations for activities and places to visit. The home is lovely. The view from the porch while sipping my morning coffee was splendid. Appreciated the use of a bike for a gorgeous long ride along the lake and even joined the family for kayaking and swimming at the lake. If you're planning to see things around the lovely city of Kyoto, the trains aren't as frequent as in the bigger cities and it takes about 30 minutes to get into town. I was super grateful for being picked up and taken to the station as needed? Rita is a phenomenal cook and was considerate of my food preferences in menu planning. What a treat to share in blueberry season.

Great hosts, I was made to feel very welcomed and John picked me up from the station. Otherwise it's a steep walk! The home is in a really peaceful location up the hill with views of the lake. Clean and comfortable. Would definitely return.

My family and I moved to Shiga Prefecture in June 2016. I love working outside our house, chopping wood for our wood stove, tending to ducks and chickens, and keeping gardens and fruit trees (we have 7 fig trees alone!). My family includes Vince (born in 2003), Andre (born 2006) and Rika. I'm happy my family and I can all meet and spend time with travelers. We look forward to meeting some of you in the near future.
