If you are looking for a beautiful place to get away for a while, this is it. Our family of four enjoys Colorado the most during the summertime as a way of escaping the Texas heat for a while. We stayed here in July of 2017 for 7 wonderful nights. It was our first time to explore this particular part of Colorado. One of the great things about Crawford and Karen's lovely home is that you can get away just as much as you desire. The Crawford Nature Retreat can be used as a secluded getaway or as a launching pad to explore other places within a two-hour drive including Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (both south and north rims), Hotchkiss (15 minutes), Paonia (25 minutes), Gunnison (1.5 hours), Ouray (1.75 hours), and Crested Butte (2 hours). Crawford is a small town with a few shops and restaurants including a restaurant previously owned by the late Joe Cocker (Old Mad Dog Cafe - decent, but not great). The town is very rural surrounded by loads of beautiful farms and orchards. The house has everything that you will need and more. The kitchen is well-equipped minus a cookie sheet which would be a nice addition. The beds are all very comfortable. There are loads of fun games and interesting books from which to choose. The wireless internet is fast and enabled us to stay in touch with friends and family while we were away. Crawford is 15 minutes away from a town called Hotchkiss which has a grocery store, City Market, where we bought our groceries for the week. There is another town called Paonia that is about 25 minutes away. I would strongly suggest taking Crawford Rd. to get there as the drive is beautiful. Paonia has some cool shops, art, multiple wineries, and good restaurants. We found ourselves going to Hotchkiss and Paonia the most during our stay for the week. Our family of four, which includes my wife, and our teenage son and daughter, really enjoyed the multiple outside decks that the house features. Each deck seems to serve its own purpose. There is one deck that is perfect for dining with a table for four, super cool lighting, and a hammock. Another deck is long and great for grilling, taking in the incredible mountain views, and for watching the hummingbirds dart around the feeder. An uncovered deck in front of that is perfect for enjoying a glass of wine while enjoying the countless stars that can only be enjoyed to their fullest in a place such as this. It was great having three bedrooms as the kids each had their own room. There are two bedrooms on the main floor, including the master bedroom, and one bedroom downstairs which has a TV with Netflix and a DVD player. There is also a utility room downstairs with a washer and dryer. Each bedroom even has its own full bathroom! This was our first time to use...

Karen's home is one of the most welcoming and interesting homes I've been in. She has a knack for decorating and uses "found" and simple objects in an interesting way which we found inspiring. Her home is comfortable and our sleep was sound in very comfortable beds. The home feels large thanks to the open concept design with large windows throughout. There are two spacious bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs, which is the main level of the home. This was all the space our family of three needed, however, there's another spacious bedroom downstairs as well. We visited Crawford in mid July; the afternoons were warm, but the home was able to maintain a cool temperature with the use of an evaporative cooler and multiple ceiling fans. The kitchen is very well equipped and functionable and she had coffee and seasonings/spices available for use. Her home backs up into a hillside and is surrounded by high desert type vegetation (lots of Pinon and Juniper pines) with an occasional spotting of small lizards out sunning themselves. The views from her home's multiple decks are stellar and vast and the night sky is impressive with the Milky Way overhead. The town of Crawford is very small with a rustic charm. I understand that there are two restaurants in town. Only ice cream was enjoyed by us at the Old Mad Dog Cafe (singer Joe Cocker used to be the owner), so I'm unfortunately unable to comment on the quality of dining in town. The grocery store is a 15-minute drive from town but there is a convenience store close to the state park which is only a 5-minute drive from the house. Also of note is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison North Rim (less visited and just as impressive) is a close 20-minute drive from Crawford. Our families' highlights from our 3-day stay at Karen's home are; my 12-year-old son really enjoyed fishing in the Reservoir; my husband enjoyed his coffee and the views from the deck in the morning, and I enjoyed the warm, inviting feeling of the home and surroundings, the night sky and the ceiling fans (weirdly, I sort of adore ceiling fans).

I grew up in Alaska and love to travel and be in natural surroundings. My favorite travel destinations are Katmai National Park on the Alaska Peninsula, and Nepal. My favorite big city is Vancouver, B.C. and small city is Santa Fe, New Mexico. My favorite book is Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. I can't live without a good cup of coffee, connection to nature, and a purposeful career. I like privacy and space, as both a Airbnb guest and host.
