We visited Hāwī for a wedding and stayed at Hap and Mely's rustic plantation cottage. On the night of our arrival, the entire town's power was shut off for some county maintenance work, but Hap and Mely rounded up a bunch of LED lights, welcomed us to the property, and made us feel right at home. Their sweet kitty, who lives at the house, kept us company as well. Hap and Mely were very attentive hosts who were highly communicative before, during, and after our stay, and Hap often dropped by to check in and offer driving directions and suggestions on events, dining, and the best coffee in town.

Our stay at Hap and Mely's was a very meaningful part of our first big family adventure. My husband, 5-year-old son and I stayed in their cottage in between visiting Volcano and Papaikou. It was so warm and inviting, completely spotless, quiet and comfortable. We had everything we needed in terms of amenities - cookware, coffee, towels, etc. The linens were all fresh and soft. Mely had even picked fresh fruit and placed it in the fridge for us! It was also the perfect home base for exploring Pololu Valley and the adjacent black sand beach, which Mely recommended to us. The cottage itself was a treat in every way, but spending time with Hap and Mely was what really made our experience in Hawi/Kapaau so meaningful. Thank you for opening your home to us and letting us meet all of your four-legged family members, Hap. We'll be seeing Mely and you again on our next Hawaiian adventure! for a couple of days, this airbnb gave us a sense of what it's like to live on the big island. hap and mely were amazing hosts who introduced us to live music in hawi and the best farmer's market we've been to yet (saturday morning under the banyan tree, in case you're interested). we found the cottage to be simple but incredibly clean and well cared for. highly recommend this place if you want to get to know a magical town and some incredible hosts.

Our hosts were truly amazing. They were keeping touch with us our whole stay, offered advice, invited to see other parts of property where donkeys, pigs and miniature horses live. Very pleasant contact with the hosts! The house is a very old cottage which has been renovated by Hap who is skilled woodworker. We could see that he put a lot of effort and time into the place and now it's a very nice house to stay in. The only thing to keep in mind is that it's a tropical environment (and an old house) so we've seen few small (completely harmless) geckos inside. If guest is afraid of lizards or feels uncomfortable when the place is not completely sterile it's probably better to look for a condo. For us the house was just fine, away from civilization (but close enough - 10min - to drive to shop/restaurant in the evening). No problems at all - great host, great house - highly recommended.

Hap is a mega-host. He went above and beyond to help us with anything we needed during our stay. He showed us the true meaning of aloha and treated us like ohana. You will be in good hands when you stay here. We will be back.

This rustic little country cottage is very cute and has a lot of character. The location is quite and secluded while still being close to town. It’s the perfect place if you want to experience “local” living. You will see a few geckos but that’s all part of living in a tropical environment. The bed slept great. Hap and Mely were absolutely wonderful hosts. All in all, a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend!

I am a life long woodworker and craftsman/artist who "homesteaded" this old plantation managers estate, and relocated this cottage. My wife, Mely and I planted ourselves here 20 years ago and are living happily ever after...come enjoy our guest house and see our work..our motto,"if it ain't fun,run!...Aloha
