Description

The space

The Two room guest suite with comfy bed and key hole shape windows, antique dresser and armoire. There is also a separate sitting room with views of the river - looking out thru the turret windows. The sitting room also has its own little porch. There are 3 others who live in this mansion - who other than Kelly you may never see. Shared vintage bath on the second floor. Ornate Victorian wash sink and 1/2 bath on the first floor too. Say hello to resident cat, Minx. Enjoy the charm of this original 1896 home with details and antiques throughout. At 120 years old, its not perfect (I want to see you at 120) - but the beauty shines through. You can tell that a lumber baron built this home for his wife and 4 daughters - one of which lived in the home until 1982 ! He used his best craftmen to built this grand home. We are still throwing much love at the wonderful old lady - getting better and better all the time..... with more stories to tell as time goes by.

Guest access

Washer, dryer, wifi, full kitchen, bike trail across the street, and backyard is an old historic park.

Interaction with guests

Kelly will try to meet you when you arrive and give you tour of the house and directions to any place in Des Moines. She will also let you know about what is going on around town and may even join you for a glass of wine. She is always just a phone call away for anything else you may need. We may have a few other guests in the home and occasionally we have some musical talent who likes to likes to practice in the home - so get ready for social hour at the Gabriel House. Also - feel free to bring your own wine and snacks to enjoy - as you take in your surroundings... Feel free to use any portion of the public space in or outside the home - and there is a large shared bath available for your use, and great walking or biking trails across the street.

The neighbourhood

One of the first houses in the beautiful Union Park neighborhood, the 1896 mansion sits across from the river and marina, as well as a wonderful bike trail, and backs up to an historic park. It is surrounded by other historic homes and is only 1 mile from downtown Des Moines.

Getting around

Uber is readily available in the Des Moines area....

Other things to note

Ask about private concert options? From Opera, accordion, violin, guitar, etc. And if you tickle the Ivory, feel free to sit down at the old pump organ or the new addition to the family.....the beautiful baby grand piano.

Kelly (and her two cats) are very hospitable! We had a nice quiet stay and the shared bathroom did not present a problem at all.

We had a wonderful time! The old house is has a great vibe and it was neat to learn about the history. Kelly was lovely and helpful, while easily accommodating our late booking. The house is with off walking distance of East Village, which was perfect for our visit. We hope to come back soon!

This home is a gorgeous Victorian gem, beautifully yet eclectically furnished with lovely antiques. Our room was spacious and comfy, and we loved the bathroom. We shared it, but this was not a problem, and it's gorgeous, too. The house is right on the bike path, which is a great feature of Des Moines, leading right to the center of town or out to outer areas. There's a park next to the house, too. There are nooks and crannies everywhere in the house to sit in; we chose the rounded first floor nook to sit and read in the sunshine. The home is on the historic register. Bring your bikes and take a spin downtown! Kelly let us put ours in the carriage house overnight. What a fun place to stay and have a good time in a great city!

This is a beautiful, historic house in a great location close to the East Village and downtown. The house is full of character and was very clean, including the shared bathroom. The housemates were friendly and helpful to us. When we booked we were a bit hesitant about staying in a place with housemates, as we had our small baby with us and were concerned that she might be disturbed by people coming in late at night. Everyone was very respectful and quiet however when they came home late and it wasn't a problem at all. We would recommend booking here if you are looking for a beautiful and unique place to stay in Des Moines.

I have always been fascinated by older homes. This was no disappointment. The architecture and history is amazing and I can't wait to see it completely restored. I have always admired this home and feel fortunate to have stayed there. I can't wait to return.
