My place is close to The Des Moines Art Center, Drake University, Iowa State Capitol, Restaurants and Parks, golf and trails. You’ll love my place because of the ambiance of a beautifully restored 1920s Arts and Crafts style home, the neighborhood, the gardens, front porch, and walk-able setting.

The space

Second bedroom may be available with double bed.

Guest access

Your private bedroom and bath, full use of the kitchen, dining room, living room, sunroom, front porch and back patio. We also have laundry facilities you may use. Finally, because our neighborhood is so pedestrian friendly, you are welcome to use your bikes.

Interaction with guests

As much or as little as you like.

Other things to note

We have two sweet Pit Bull puppies that were born December 23rd 2016 and January 3rd 2017. Please see reviews about the girls.

Also we are about 1.2 miles from city trail access. Once you reach this trail access you can travel 20-30 miles in two directions. We have a great trail system.

Very nice comfortable older home in a nice residential neighborhood, well located to get downtown and see the sights. Nicely decorated and clean but cluttered appearance. Susan & Charlie were very friendly and gave us good suggestions for dining with live music. I would stay again if we return to the area.

Susan and Charlie's home is truly lovely. They were wonderful hosts, easy to communicate with and a pleasure to talk to. The room was cozy, the bed was very comfortable, and I always appreciate a super clean bathroom! Our days in Des Moines were busy, so we mostly returned to Susan and Charlie's home to rest and relax, and it was the perfect spot for that. The homemade apple cake was also a delightful treat! And the pups were so sweet - very quiet and well behaved. This is a fantastic home to stay at when you're in Des Moines!

Be sure to spend some time at the Des Moines Art Center down Polk St.. Especially notice the architecture of the 3 stages. Staying in Susan's house will inspire interest in architecture. Getting up & down the driveway can be tight; cars were smaller 90+ years ago. We had a little trouble due to our bike rack hanging on the back.

Charlie and Susan made my stay in Des Moines very special. I was in town for a former student's wedding and was spoiled by my Iowa hosts. They went out of their way to accommodate my needs, from calling their friends and neighbors to find tennis rackets so I could give a quick lesson to refugees eager to play, to a final evening, impromptu candlelight dinner, with meaningful conversation to boot. Needless to say, they warmed my heart in an everlasting way. I highly recommend their home if you are interested in experiencing sleepful nights, warm hearts, and a quentisential Des Moines hospitality that is over the top - spectacular! To return the favor, and to balance the books, I feel obligated to invite them to my hometown of San Diego to reciprocate their authentic welcome. Until we meet again, thank you to my hosts in Des Moines! ️️Blessings sent, Donna Rullo

I was a little hesitant about staying in an airbnb in which the hosts were present in the house (I've only rented full houses before) but couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. Susan and Charlie were welcoming and let me have all the privacy or interaction I wanted. The accommodations are semi-private, but I never felt like they were anything but fully private! So much more comfortable and cozy than a hotel. Keep in mind they do have two dogs who are about 5 months old (as of June 2017). They are well behaved, but are stil puppies so they are learning, and are kept separate from guests unless you ask to play with them. Very highly recommended, and I will stay with Susan and Charlie again when I travel to Des Moines!
