Just 1.5 miles from 101 (Pacific Coast Highway), easy access, but far enough for a quiet night's sleep. Stay in our private cabin in the country just 3 minutes from Eureka. Enjoy custom cabinetry and tile work, a newer queen bed with cotton bedding, wireless, a kitchenette, and a washer/dryer, with a view of the picturesque Elk River Valley. Luxury and convenience in a rural setting! Large vehicles welcome.
The bunkhouse is full of comforts and custom features. It is attached to a separate garage/laundry with its own entrance and includes a living room/kitchenette, bedroom, and bathroom. The space has smaller-than-standard doorways and a few stairs up to both entrances. Our property is the headquarters of a historic dairy, so you will have views of a huge 150-year-old barn, a smaller milking barn, a loafing shed, the main house, and lots of fenced pasture. Instead of cattle, we have two horses and a sweet dog who sometimes partakes of the outdoors around the little bunkhouse.
The whole bunkhouse will be your own private space during your visit. The kitchenette has a microwave, electric hot water kettle, toaster, and a refrigerator. We provide coffee and tea. The bedroom has a recently purchased queen bed with cotton sheets and an excellent heater. The space is wireless enabled.
There is a sleeping pad for the floor to accommodate a third guest. Please no more than three guests.
Access to the property is easy and there is plenty of space for trailers and large vehicles.
Fishermen and fisherwomen: We have a locked garage for small boats and facilities for cleaning fish.
Interaction with guests
We are often home on the property and always happy to help with your needs. If you are looking for more privacy, you are welcome to experience our space that way instead. We are active people who love running, horses, kayaking, kayak fishing, and social dancing. On parle francais.
Other things to note
There is a steep 2-mile out-and-back walk from the house up Westgate Drive. We don’t recommend walking along the main roads due to traffic. The paved Eureka Waterfront Trail along the Humboldt Bay is a mile and a half from our home and the Headwaters Forest Trail is 4 miles away. This is a gorgeous 11-mile out-and-back hike (with a paved first mile) along the Elk River. Eureka boasts two local natural food stores about 10 minutes away. It takes 5 minutes to drive to the Bayshore Mall (which houses a Planet Fitness) and 10 minutes to Costco or Old Town, Eureka. Old Town is known for many unique shops and restaurants, a horse-drawn carriage, the dock for a historic ferry called The Madaket that gives tours of Humboldt Bay during warmer months, and a monthly “Arts Alive” night on the first Saturday of the month. We are a 25-minute drive from Arcata and Humboldt State University to the north or The Victorian Village of Ferndale to the south.
- We cherish our little bunkhouse and ask only that you take care of it for us. Please no smoking or drugs. We want you to feel welcome and at home.
- Our property was a working dairy until 2010 and there are several industrial outbuildings which are not developed or safe for guest access. Please don't enter these buildings.
We enjoy partner dancing and are currently studying tango. We love cooking, reading, kayaking, spending time with our horses, and caring for our place. Rick is an avid kayak fisherman and a fine woodworker. Wendy is quite obsessed with running and walking with our dog. She is a consulting special education teacher for students with physical disabilities. We are currently taking care of Rick's elderly father.
We are really enjoying sharing our little bunkhouse with travelers. Both of us love meeting people from near and far. We want to be very welcoming as hosts, and we try to be responsive to how much interaction or privacy our guests might like. As guests, we strive to communicate well, be quiet and respectful, and leave places neat and clean.
