Named for a boat shipwrecked on its shore nearly a century ago, Pilot House boasts gorgeous views of the working harbor and outlying islands. The oceanfront house on spacious grounds is comfortable and up-to-date, with water views from the large high-end kitchen, open-plan living and dining areas, master bedroom, lower-level guest room, and upper deck. Outside spaces include front and back gardens and a small waterside platform for watching the boat traffic. Town center is a short walk away.

The space
Enter Pilot House through the gated front perennial garden. Through the spacious front hall you can see the dining area with its large windows to the water views beyond. The dining space is contiguous with a roomy and comfortable living room which includes a gas fireplace; sofa with good reading lights; shelving with books, puzzles, and games; TV/speakers; and wonderful natural light from windows on two sides. From the living room you can reach the long deck with a dining table and chairs at one end and comfy rocking chairs at the other. On the other side of the dining room is the extensive kitchen, with electric stove and convection oven, fridge, microwave, and all the basics for cooking, baking, and eating. All these rooms look out over the water.

On the same level, overlooking the garden, is a bedroom suite with a queen bed and bathroom with shower. A small office space is also on this floor.

Upstairs, you'll find a spacious master suite with queen bed, clothing storage, bathroom with shower, and once again those beautiful views out across the deck and back garden to the water. If you choose to, you can watch glorious sunrises from bed!

The lower level comprises the basement laundry room (with access to the driveway for loading) and a rustic bedroom and small bathroom with shower, with its own door to the back garden. Although this bedroom lacks the polish of the two upper levels, it has privacy and, yes, a view of the water, best seen from the small writing desk under the windows. The queen bed in this room is on a raised platform.

Behind the house, a tiered garden includes flowers and ferns nearest to the house; a lawn with shade trees one level down, overlooking the water; and a flight of stairs down to a small platform where you can watch boats come and go. Please note that steps to the different levels are made of local granite and do require careful footing.

Although the house is right over the water, there's no shore access on the property itself. However, it's just half a mile north to the center of town where you'll find food, a terrific library, and the town dock, as well as art galleries and shops and a stop for the free Island Explorer bus.

Southwest Harbor is on the "Quiet Side" of Mount Desert Island, just a ten-minute drive from some of the lesser-known trails of Acadia National Park, as well as the popular Echo Lake Beach and Seawall region. In town you can rent bikes or kayaks to explore Long Pond.

A half-hour drive (or bus ride) takes you to the rest of Acadia, including park headquarters, the famous Ocean Drive region, Jordan Pond, and the carriage roads and huge variety of hiking trails, from leisurely to intense. Bar Harbor's nightlife is also accessible... while Pilot House awaits your return to the Quiet Side.
