Our small cottage is over 170 years old and near beautiful sea and mountains - good for 'getting away from it all' to explore an unspoiled natural environment. We serve a generous continental style breakfast with a lovely sea view. Tarskavaig is wonderfully peaceful and remotely located; you will need a car to get here - there is no bus service to the village, 8 miles from Skye ferry. Sadly we're unable to offer wi-fi due to extremely limited broadband to the village. No mobile signal locally.

The space

Burnbank Cottage is a very pretty, traditional Hebridean white cottage dating back to over 170 years and is located in the tiny, remote township of Tarskavaig, reached via a dramatic 6 mile single lane road with passing places. This is a bed and Breakfast and therefore NOT a self catering venue. Your ground floor bedroom with small en suite has comfortable twin beds and a meadow view, and is adjoined by a private sun porch with an equally lovely view and seating for two with tea and coffee making supplies. The photography and art work decorating the cottage have been produced by your hosts Penny and Graham. A small DVD TV is provided should you feel like watching a movie from a selection available to you and the sun porch and bedroom area have their own entrance thus affording guests privacy, with space for luggage, shoes and hanging up coats and outerwear. Your bedroom has a lock and key. We anticipate guests using our facilities between 4pm and 10am on a daily basis.

Guest access

Your lovely twin bedded (two single beds) en suite room has a gorgeous view across the meadow to the hills. You also have private use of our small sun porch, where seating by the guest entrance looks out through a picture window, and where you may browse books and leaflets whilst enjoying the peace. Breakfast is served in our front sun room conservatory, which has a beautiful outlook to the sea and the Isle of Rum; if you're fortunate you may see our neighbourly rabbits nibbling on the bank - it's so peaceful! There are many species of wild birds locally and our garden plays host to delightful goldfinches, robins, sparrows, green finches and many other varieties.

Interaction with guests

One or both of your hosts will always be on hand to suggest things to do, places to eat etc and we are glad to assist with travel plans and local information. You are most welcome to have a hot drink with us whilst whilst we tell you a little about Skye. My husband Graham is a professional landscape photographer and when he is around he will be able to show you images of all the possible beauty spots, and more hidden corners of this beautiful island so you can plan your day(s).

Other things to note

Tarskavaig is suprisingly remote considering we are only 6 miles from the main road and 8 miles from Armadale where the Skye ferry comes in from Mallaig. The 6 mile long township road is single track with passing places and you will need to drive gently - you will want to take in the wonderful views anyway. Sheep and cattle graze unfenced beside the road. There are a number of sought after restaurants within 10 to 15 minutes drive; Kinloch House (Michelin starred), Duisdale House, Toravaig, Isle Ornsay Hotel and Ardvasar Hotel as well as places to get a lighter meal and snack such as The Trading Post by the Armadale Post Office and the new Community Hub at Camus Cross. If you are coming to us via either the Skye Bridge or the rest of Skye, Broadford is a good place to stop for supplies and also has a choice of eating places. Tarskavaig Village Hall serves afternoon teas on Wednesday/Thursday/Friday during July and August - lovely home baking with a stunning view across to the Cuillin Range. It is rightly famed as being Britain's most stunningly located village hall! If you have difficulty getting something to eat we can offer you a light supper if your stuck - just what we would be having ourselves - please do ask!

- We serve a continental style breakfast. Please note there are no shops or eateries within 6 miles so you may wish to find somewhere to eat before leaving the main road or book yourselves a table beforehand - there are a good number of sought after restaurant hotels in the sothern part of Skye.
- We are unable to offer wi-fi due to extremely limited broadband availability in Tarskavaig, and there is no mobile reception locally. Tarskavaig manages to be quite remote even though we are only 6 miles off the main road - come and enjoy the peace!

Penny has created an oasis of calm. Lovely twin room with ensuite facilities. Lots of charm and lovely gestures like the little treats when you arrive. Very remote but I am so glad we stayed here rather than in a town as I felt we got to see the real Skye. Breakfast is first class with all needs catered for. Highly recommended.

Wonderful warm welcome from Penny & Graham, who treated me like a long lost friend. Wonderfully remote spot and a lovely nights stay and breakfast. They cooked me a wonderful dinner, gave me amazing recommendations for places to visit around Skye, and Graham gave me the best Photoshop lesson I could have imagined.

Penny greeted us very warmly, having waited patiently as we wound our way over Skye in the dark. Her home was spotless, our room cosy and comfortable, clean and silent, and the setting, heavenly. Delicious breakfast too! Thank you.

Living in Tarskavaig has been the closest thing to coming home since that feeling you get about happy childhood memories - it is so peaceful and inspiring annd beautiful here. Since leaving primary teaching and coming to live here with my husband Graham I have not only written 2/3 of my first novel and dozens and dozens of poems, but begun to design and craft jewellery (SkyShore Jewelery) and produced other creative items such as hand woven tapestries and handknitted items.
Graham and I love meeting people from all walks of life and are relaxed and friendly hosts. We are glad to advise on Skye sights and, with just the one letting room, we are able to focus on making you comfortable. Tarskavaig is off the beaten track and, with no mobile signal and barely any wi-fi, it is easy to disconnect and truly relax in the delightful seaside location surrounded by open space, mountains and the glorious beauty of unspoilt nature.
