Our recently renovated house is situated in the centre of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete, in a quiet old neighbourhood. Its position is ideal for those who want to explore the city itself and also great for exploring the rest of the island.

The space

Our house is situated in the centre of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete. Its position is ideal for anyone that wants to explore the city itself and indeed the rest of the island with the splendours of Chania, about a two hour drive west of Heraklion, or the charm of Agios Nikolaos, about an hour and a half drive east of the house.

The property is within the famous Venetian walls and we're only a few minutes walk from Lions Square in the very heart of the city. We're in an old neighbourhood which is surprisingly quiet and peaceful given its central location. Most evenings all you can hear is our jasmine tree lightly fluttering in the gentle breeze, when the smells are divine.

We spent five months last year renovating the property which now boasts an efficient solar-panel system for hot water, a brand new contemporary bathroom, satellite TV and WiFi throughout the house.

Guest access

The house consists of:

Ground Floor: Large reception/dining room, kitchen, hall, toilet, outside toilet (in the small back yard) and outside patio.

First Floor: Large landing space, living room (with French doors to outside balcony), bathroom with shower, bedroom with double bed and French doors to a pretty outside terrace.

There is an Apple Mac computer (with internet connection) in the living room which guests are welcome to use, a TV with "OTE TV" subscription (included) so you can get BBC World News, CNBC, France 24 and DW, among many other Greek and International channels. There is also a DVD player (and a selection of movies) stereo system (and a selection of CDs) with FM tuner. There is FREE fast Wi-Fi available throughout the house. There are land-line telephones in both reception and living rooms, with FREE calls to phone numbers within Greece, which are perfect for ordering delivered take-out food!

The kitchen is well equipped with fridge, microwave with oven-grill, two gas-hobs, electric kettle, bread toaster and Gaggia espresso coffee maker & coffee grinder... and a washing machine!

Fresh towels and bedding are provided.

There is also an iron, an ironing board and hair-dryer available for your use.

Interaction with guests

We live in the countryside about 25 minutes from the house and are always on call should you need help or advice during your stay.

Other things to note

If you require collecting from Heraklion airport or the port on arrival, we're be happy to pick you up and drive you to the house. If you'd prefer a car waiting for you on arrival we can put you in touch with our preferred car-rental companies. Alternatively, we can advise you where to go to hire a car after your arrive, when you've maybe had time to settle in a bit!

We will make sure that there is a complimentary bottle of wine on the table to welcome you and that there is plenty enough in the fridge for a good Cretan breakfast!

For those of you with business to conduct (meetings, seminars, demonstrations etc.) the downstairs reception room can be easily adapted. It can accommodate around 30 people and there are additional new chairs (see the yellow ones in the photos) in store at the house that can be used for this purpose.

We look forward to welcoming you very soon!

Clive was a brilliant host who gave us loads of information to help us find our way around and restaurant recommendations etc. The house was in an amazing location, very close to the harbor and to bus routes and shops. It was surprisingly quiet considering it was near to the hub of the city. The house itself was beautiful and had everything we needed for our stay to be comfortable and homely.

Clive is an amazing host, he picked us up from the bus station and took us back there at the end of our stay. On arriving he gave us a tour of the surrounding district, giving us information about where to eat etc. The house was lovely, beautifully furnished and very comfortable. We loved sitting in the courtyard to eat our breakfast every morning. Clive had generously provided many items of food and drink for our stay. A great central, but quiet location, perfect for a break in Heraklion.

Clive and Chantal are amazing hosts. They are warm, generous, thoughtful and genuinely care about people and go beyond expectations to make the stay in their charming Arthouse hassle-free and very relaxing. They made us feel like we were staying in a friend's home rather than a rental and had provided everything we needed to make us feel we had made a smart decision choosing their home for our stay in Heraklion. We have already recommended them and their home to family and friends and would gladly choose them as hosts again. Thank you Clive and Chantal for a memorable stay in your wonderful home.

We have used air bnb for two previous stays and the stay at clives place came up to the best of what we now expect. The house was as in the web photos and the ambience even better- quiet and relaxed.Clive gave us a warm welcome including driving and parking directions. Its local knowledge that we appreciate and Clive gave that in full, even a guided tour of the area plus lots of maps and leaflets. We had no problems with the house and Clive was only a phone call away if we needed to ask questions. Clive gave us great advice on where to sample Cretan food from the simple local place were we could see the food being freshly cooked to a more upmarket foodie place in town which again used locally grown ingredients. We used the local place 3x -it was run by a friendly family and we felt truely in a Cretan home. Iraklion was great for our type of holiday, city on hand, two excellent museums on archaeology/history,5km from Knossos,shops/markets to explore, great food and wine.We also drove out to Festos to see the palace and the bonus of the view of Mt Ida which was snow capped.Had we stayed longer we would have explored the roman ruins at Gortys and the Lasithi area -next time!

This is a beautiful property, well situated but quiet and with everything you need for your stay in Heraklion. Clive and Chantal have completed a stylish renovation and are consummate hosts who leave lots of little extras. For the heat sensitive, there is no AC, but good fans and large airy rooms mostly shaded. Absolutely charming: recommend.

We stayed at Clive and Chantal's 'Art House' for ten days this July. We were attracted by the beautiful pictures of the house and it's central location in Heraklion. What we didn't bargain for was the warmth and hospitality of our hosts who went well out of their way to make us feel welcome and entreated us to make ourselves at home: meeting us from the airport was well appreciated especially as Clive brought ice cold water with him in the heat of the midday sun! The house was well-stocked with fresh provisions and a luscious fruit bowl and bottle of rather lovely local wine. Clive took us on a short walking tour to help us find our bearings around town. This was like having your own personal tour guide as he is so knowledgeable about the local area (and runs a useful local website). Recommendations for places to eat we're spot-on and such good value for money. In particular the restaurant Peskesi was a real treat for our wedding anniversary dinner - spectacular food in a fantastic restored old building - thanks for the tip Clive. But I guess most of you want to know about the comfort of the accommodation! This was fantastic and we made good use of the small terrace outside the bedroom, morning and evening. My husband enjoyed having a base to come back and watch the Tour de France on a decent telly, and I found one of my most favourite CDs in the rack so I was in heaven! Thanks again Clive and Chantal for your friendship and hospitality. If you are ever in Bedford,UK please look us up - we owe you a drink!!

My wife and I stayed at Clive's the first week in May 2014. We were collected from the airport by Clive, shown around the apartment and the local area and generally made very welcome. The apartment was very stylish with every amenity we needed for our week's stay. There was even some food basics to get us started for the first couple of days. Heraklion is interesting. It takes a bit of time to get into it but if you like every imaginable type of coffee you can dream of, then its cafe culture is one of the best. To make the best of the city, gen up on the history in your travel guide books and then check out the Historical Museum of Crete. This will help you dig deeper into the place and enrich your stay. Knossos is a must but go to the Archeological Museum first. Clive introduced us to a few restaurants. His "local" is great for starters but there are some superb fish restaurants around the harbour, especially if you steer away from the more obvious ones. We did not hire a car and used buses for trips to Rethymnon and Phaestos. However next time we will hire a car for a few days so we can access the beaches on the south coast. On the last day, Clive took us back to the airport to end a very satisfying week. You can now test me on the Minoans, Byzantines, Saracens, Venetians, Ottomans etc! A very rich and turbulent history!

Hello, my name is Clive. My partner's name is Chantal and we live on the beautiful island of Crete. I'm an artist originally from England and Chantal is from Belgium. We met here about 5 years ago and take life a little easier now. We have a house in the country, not far from Heraklion, and in 2013 we also acquired this old town house in Heraklion. It's a great place to stay when we're in town as it is so central. Just a few minutes walk and we're in Lions Square, the very hub of the city! We have just finished renovating the house which took us almost six months to complete, and our plan is to offer it to family when they visit us and to other guests who might like a central place to stay when visiting the fascinating island of Crete. We look forward to welcoming you very soon!
