Mainhood lake is a quiet retreat in Muskoka. Everything you need is here for your get away in the heart of Muskoka. Ask about discounts for people with a minimum of three good reviews, also discounts for weekly stays from September to May.

The space

Our cottage is a great place to kick back and relax. You can also feel good about staying in a place that is carbon negative. We built it with ICF (insulated concrete forms), triple pane windows, geothermal heat and a/c, solar thermal hot water heater (gives you lots of hot water) and we generate solar energy too.
The main floor is open plan, has slate tile, granite counters and maple cupboards. It is a comfortable welcoming space to unwind and enjoy your time in Muskoka. We have many board games in the TV cabinet if some friendly competition is in order. The kitchen is well equipped with utensils, pots (including roast pans), coffee makers, extra large toaster, beautiful gas stove and glass wear. There is a two piece bathroom and the outside shower is just off the living room, there isn't a check box for that on Airbnb so I have said two bathroom rather than 1.5 (out door shower is not in use for winter).

Upstairs the master bedroom has a very large closet and a great view of the lake, you will love going to bed looking at the stars and waking up to see the water and the garden below. The second bedroom has a queen bed, closet and an amazing view. The third bedroom is the kids (or kids at heart) bunk room. There are two bunk beds, one is a single on the top and double on the bottom, the other is a single / single. We have an assortment of children's books for bed time stories. All beds, mattress and pillows are new (fall 2016) and have the proper fully enclosed bed bug covers for your peace of mind and ours. The flooring upstairs is hardwood. The upstairs bathroom is tiled with travertine and has a large custom shower, glass bowel sink with custom cherry cabinet and deep jetted tub.

Off of the living room is a screened gazebo, with a small deck off the front. There is a gas BBQ on the gazebo deck ready to go. The washer and dryer in the utility room are also available for you to use (HE soap and dryer sheets included). We do have an internet security camera in the utility room, that's where all the geothermal, internet and plumbing are in the house so when no one is there we can see everything is ok, or if in the unlikely event something happens while you are there we can see what is wrong and have the right person come to get it back on track. The camera is pointed at the ceiling unless there is a problem.

The outside space has several gardens that attract humming birds, butterflies and the usual assortment of Muskoka critters. It's lovely to sit outside in the morning quite with a coffee or tea and watch the hummingbirds jump flower to flower.

Guest access

You have access to the entire house with the exception of one closet, we keep cleaning supplies and our personal items in it. There are a couple of sheds, a garage and a small cottage that are off limits.

Interaction with guests

Help is only a text or call away. We are also considering how we can help those international travellers, The Toronto airport is about 2.5 hours away, if there is interest we could talk about airport pickups and tours.

Other things to note

There are other cottages on the lake, however it is not a busy lake, power boats are not generally used. Mostly you see canoes, electric motors, paddle boats and stand up paddle boards. Most people are respectful others regarding outside noise in the evening. We ask you to do the same and be respectful of others, you will be responsible of any fines related to noise complaints.

Will consider monthly discounts for the right situation or time frame.

Everything is more than expected. The cottage is very clean and new and fully equipped. Plenty thoughtful detail in the cottage made us feels like home. Kayaking on the lake and enjoy the gorgeous sunset view made us rather stay and relax in here than go out for our hiking plan. Pauline is a really nice person and great host. We also got a large bag of thanksgiving gifts from her that letting us have a warm thanksgiving night. Definitely recommend this place! Thanks Pauline.

This place is an absolute gem. The house is beautiful and comfortable, the property is beautiful, and the lake is perfect. Great for swimming and kayaking/rowboating. Pauline was an excellent host - very communicative and proactive. The start of our trip was hampered by a tornado touching down in the area resulting in a power-outage for a little over a day. Their on-site generator gave us virtually everything we needed, and our hosts were by frequently to check on the generator and make sure we had what we needed. Obviously nothing they could do to change the circumstances, but they dealt with it beautifully. Only downside was more mosquitoes than we were expecting. Not sure they are always so plentiful or because it's been a particularly wet summer. Again, not our hosts' fault, and the mosquito suits they provided made my parents' morning walks perfectly comfortable. Pauline also made sure there was plenty of mosquito repellent on hand. Highly recommend. Would love to come back here again!

Excellent for a group of 6. The place was even nicer than the photos suggest! Such a beautiful spot for a weekend getaway. The keyless entry made the check-in seamless. Thank you Pauline for a wonderful weekend!

We really loved our stay at Mainhood lake. It's a quiet, secluded spot in an otherwise busy Muskoka region that made for a great getaway from Toronto for the Family Day long weekend in February of 2017. We were two couples, each with two young children, plus another friend, making us a group of five adults and four children. Our drive up through the long weekend Friday traffic slowed us down, but we were still able to get to the cottage in under three hours. Coming home (downtown Toronto), at a lower-traffic time of day, the trip was just over two hours. Once we arrived, we found plenty of space to park 3 cars (could probably fit 4-5, but we had just 3), and a spacious, clean cottage that had modern technological amenities to contrast with a rustic decor and vibe. The in-floor heating gave a cozy feeling of protection from the February cold. The big, soft leather couches made for a nice place to sit or lie down to read a good book, while the zillion TV channels allowed us a means of staying connected if we had wanted (we didn't). Upstairs the bedrooms were spacious and felt welcoming/comfortable (including lots of closet space), while the gorgeous washroom had heated floors, a separate bath and shower, and was well-stocked with towels. Outside was a snazzy hot tub, in which we sat and enjoyed the clear view of the stars in warm comfort. During the day we played with the kids in the spacious yard and wandered out onto the frozen lake to try to snag some dinner while ice fishing. We didn't have any luck with the fish - pretty well the only complaint we had with the weekend, and not much of a reason to be critical of the place. As for the hosts - Pauline and her husband Bill were above and beyond what we could have hoped for. Due to a big snowfall just prior to our arrival, Bill drove for 4-5 hours to the place to shovel and snowblow out the paths around the place, and wound up actually plowing the road in, which the local snowplow guy had somehow missed. When we were later than anticipated getting to the cottage, Bill waited for several hours for us to arrive, then gave us a detailed tour of everything we could possibly need to know. Pauline, meanwhile had been the coordinating one as we planned our trip and was wonderful. She was responsive and amenable, and provided me with pictures of the hot tub cover (around which there was a bit of an issue that we worked with them around managing) that I hadn't even thought to ask for. While we were there she sent us a list of stuff for us to do and check out, without being asked. Pauline and Bill were both thorough and proactive as hosts; I can say unequivocally that they cared about us as guests, and genuinely wanted us to...

I am a forty something married Mom who has two very talented kids. So talented in fact our Daughter is going to University for vocal performance this fall, so we are listing our lake house as a rental to help fund her education.

I have been in the Paramedic biz for over 20 years. As a family we love to travel, and hope to do much more of that in the future. We are a pretty laid back group, and love hanging out with friends and family.
