Set in a stunning and peaceful location on The Isle of Skye, Boatbuilder's Cottage provides the perfect retreat for boat lovers and marine enthusiasts. This charming stone cottage built in 1886 is situated on the edge of Waterloo Boatyard, looking out over Broadford Bay. There is a beach, slip and a tidal mooring just in front of the cottage. We can provide additional parking space to store boat trailers if you want to bring your own boat.

The space

Boatbuilders Cottage is the on the edge Waterloo Boatyard in the crofting township of Waterloo or Achaidhiurn (place of the Cairn), which overlooks Broadford Bay with views across to Ben na Caiileach, (the mountain of the old woman), Irishman's point and the small islands of Scalpay, Pabay and Raasay beyond.
The Boatyard provides hard standing for the wintering storage ashore of boats (about 65 currently). There is also an independent boat building business operating out of the yard.

The areas that are not used for the boatyard business have been extensively planted in trees over the past thirty years and have become a haven for wildlife with many species of birds, deer, pine marten, otters and increasingly, as the trees are being thinned out a wide diversity of plants and wildflowers. We also run a side business selling semi-mature trees in bags. We use the tree thinnings as boat props in the yard or for firewood.

There are two woodland walks through the trees, which guests can use.

Guest access

The cottage is wholly self contained with a gravelled parking area and a lawned area in front of the cottage. The beach with tidal mooring and slipway is a short distance down the drive.

Interaction with guests

We live on site and will normally be available to offer help and answer any questions on arrival.

Other things to note

There is no TV or DVD player in the cottage. The cottage does however have dedicated WiFi.

We enjoy special and unique places, and this one fits the bill. It's extremely cozy, and the hosts are very kind and welcoming. The window over the bed gave us some unexpected star gazing to doze off to. The kitchen is quite large making it a good gathering place. The host gave us a tour of the property where we learned this history of this and the surrounding building. We stayed 2 nights. On our full day there we toured the double loop of Isle of Sky. This is a perfect location from which to do that.

We had an amazing stay at Allan and Katharine's cottage. For four adults we were very comfortable and had plenty of space. This location is perfect for visiting Skye. Katharine even told us about some hidden gems on the Isle we were so glad we didn't miss. I highly recommend this cottage.

From the moment I saw this little gem on Airbnb I knew it would be perfect for us, and on arrival it certainly did not disappoint. My son and I had kept this booking a secret from my husband, who we knew would absolutely love it, and his genuine excitement at finding such a quaint cottage right on the seafront was a testimony to both its presentation and location. In addition we were treated to amazing friendliness and hospitality by our hosts Allan and Catherine and felt as though we had made 2 new friends! My only regret was not staying longer, which might have given us more opportunity to spot the elusive deer and otters that eluded us! To anybody considering staying here the cottage is exactly as pictured, the kitchen was large and well equipped and the washing machine and dryer were a pleasure to use. The living room was rustic but very comfortable and homely. If there was a negative, for me it was the pillows which I found too flat and soft, but otherwise it is a huge thumbs up and I would not hesitate to return.

The cottage was just what we were looking for to complete our roadtrip around the isle of skye. A very lovely place with amazing views. They both came to say hi when we arrived and to make sure everything was fine. Very recommended.
