We loved this spot! Mari was excellent! She cleaned the place everyday and also answered any questions we had. We enjoyed staying far enough away from Old Havana where we weren't bombarded by other tourists, but close enough to get to all sites we wanted to see. We also loved being walking distance from the Malecon!
Book this place! It's much better in person that the photos! Armando and Mary are great hosts and the apartment is a perfect one bedroom in a wonderful location, close to the Melia Cohiba hotel, tons of taxis and tons of great, affordable food options. Breakfast for less than $5 is easy to find and dinner spots for $6-10 are ample. The apartment is close to the Malecon and we heard lots of English speakers around doing the same as us. Mary and Armando were happy to lend us a few small pans, pots and coffee maker for light cooking. There's also a local coffee shop right downstairs where you can get cuban coffee for mere pennies. Otherwise, you can get an americano across the street for $2. The area is super safe and quiet. We loved sitting on the balcony with beers and music into the night. Taking a taxi to Old Havana was easily bargained down to $3 with a little effort, taxi to one of the farther beaches was $15-18 and airport for $15, if you take one of the older, dinkier cars. There's also a grocery store and Western Union in the plaza next to the Melia hotel. You can also get beers for $1 at the gas station right there and water too. Definitely lots of food options around and if not, walk about 15mins to 23rd street where there are many, many more to choose from of all types. You can also get a bus or taxi collectivo on Linea or 23rd. There's also a fun bar around the corner called Essencia where we enjoyed a fun drag show on a Monday, but the other nights have a diverse crowd. Armando knows lots of the nearby spots to recommend as well as general recommendations about Havana and area adventures. Mary is very sweet and provides daily turn down service in the flat. They both live separately, but next door. They imposed no restrictions on guests. The fridge is filled with a few drinks for purchase as well, tho at a profit. Armando was very open minded and warned us about thieves and other characters to be mindful about so we went out cognizant of the possible threats to our safety and wallets. That said, this part of Vedado is very residential and very safe when compared to the frenetic mayhem of downtown Havana or Old Havana. And more fairly priced. There's also a post office, bakeries and small convenience shops nearby. The bathroom has a blowdryer and a shaving mirror as well as ample light. Air conditioning in the bedroom is very strong as well. There's also a bidet, if that's your thing. The large bed can be easily separated into two twins. And digital TV with at least one good English channel helps pass time between outings. After a long day in the hot sun, coming back to the shower, comfy bed and tranquility of the area made this a winner for my...
The Tropical Haus was our very first Airbnb experience. Armando and Mery were absolutely lovely, and the apartment was great. As others have said, the location is close to restaurants, bars, easy transportation, and a few hotels where you can find money exchange and wifi. The beds are very firm but that suited us just fine. The place is extremely clean and has everything you might need... a few blocks away is a grocery store where you can get snacks, however Armando provides quite a bit in the fridge at SERIOUSLY reasonable prices. Across the street is a fairly new resto/bar called Gabanna that has cheap breakfast and cocktails at night, and downstairs is a sandwich shop that opens at 6am (most other breakfast places in the area open at 8AM). It is a tiny bit noisy in the early AM, but we had earplugs and were fine. The best nearby restos for dinner were New George (a block west on the 2nd floor of a building), and Artechef, an amazing culinary school/resto 2 blocks west of the house. We ate there twice, absolutely delicious. Armando was kind enough to arrange a taxi ride to Varadero with his friend Carlos who is a driver, which was very much appreciated, as the prices can vary quite a bit if you are asking drivers in front of the nearby hotels. Water pressure, etc, was consistent, check in and check out were a breeze, and we would most certainly come back to stay at the Tropical Haus when we return to Vedado. Thank you again for the trip of a lifetime, Armando and Mery! XO
The apartment was spacious & clean. The bed is big and good, Shower with warm & cold water and a little balcony where you can sit. It can be a bit noisy of the traffic in the street but we got used to that. The neighborhood is ok, just a few steps from the Malecon & there are a few nice restaurants. You can change money in the nearby hotels and there is a supermarket close by. A very good option if you do not wanna stay in the centre and hustle of old havana. Also the stop of the hop of hop on bus is nearby. The contactperson Mary was a nice lady and she cleaned the apartment every day which was very nice. We loved staying here and can recommend it to every one!
