Great location
100% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
Enjoy a peaceful country view while relaxing on the front porch. This home sits on 14 acres, just off US Highway 61. Guests will see deer roaming in the yard early morning and at night. This rental accommodates families traveling with children or the couple seeking a quiet retreat. Stay here while you visit family and friends in the area. It is a short drive to Louisiana, Clarksville, Hannibal or Mark Twain Lake. (40 Min). We are about one hour from St. Louis.

The space
Are you talking with your friends or family about a getaway? We are certainly ready for summer. We had some sunny days in winter and numerous snows - from flurries to the "real thing". Our first flakes came in October. But now, the grass is green and the flowers are blooming!

Many guests ask to see our eagle's nest. It is a short drive from the cottage to the nest along the creek. Two eggs have hatched and the young ones have learned to fly. You will see them sitting on the branches beside the nest. Mother eagle is teaching them about food - she is flying throughout the sky helping them search.

We also have new kittens, born May 3, 2021! Bonnie is a good mom so they are sure to do well. Fun times ahead for your children when they visit!

The calendar is current. It was a crazy busy summer and fall in 2020. Many people chose the cottage over a hotel and many guests cancelled airline reservations, staying closer to home. I met a lot of nice families in 2020.

All guests get a little bonus from my favorite store in Bowling Green. Ask me about the 10% discount offered by The Henny Penny. This is a new boutique that features home décor, children's gifts, purses and furniture.

You will find this location a peaceful getaway if you are tired of staying at home. There is little traffic on the road so guests are able to enjoy the sounds of nature without the noise of emergency vehicles or major traffic. In spring and summer you will see tractors, for sure. The house sits in a little nook all its own, despite being part of a 200 acre property.

We recently cleared a trail through the woods behind the cottage. Bring your old shoes and take a walk. There is a small creek that only has water when it rains.

Are you still working from home? You can manage laptop tasks from the kitchen table or the beautiful desk. The cottage has high speed internet supplied by our rural electric company. If your students are enrolled online they can do homework from here. How about that? A vacation and work rolled into one!

Each sleeping room has bedside USB charging available. There is a laser printer available by the desk.

Additional cleaning and sanitizing between guests is being done as recommended by Airbnb. This is a pet-free home. No pets have ever lived in the cottage.

Consider the cottage if you have a 2021 wedding or family reunion in the area. There are three wedding groups reserved already. Guests find the house is a convenient place to visit with family. Sometimes we have just the bride and groom. The 2021 calendar is available - up to 12 months in the future. (so June 2021 to June 2022) Occasionally we host families for funerals or memorial services. Although not a pleasant event, I am honored to provide a comfortable place for families to gather.

The cottage has 3 bedrooms available; one king and two queens. Someone can sleep on the couch if they wish. I just added a twin bed to the basement bedroom. (Queen plus twin there, now) It works well for your kids or grandkids.

The kitchen is fully stocked for your use. There is a griddle, toaster, microwave, crock pot, cookware and baking sheets. Ask about use of the gas BBQ grill. Coffee and tea are provided.

We are easily accessible from major highways in the area.

Where you’ll be

Bowling Green, Missouri, United States

I have restaurant recommendations available with addresses and contact information.

Visitors may be interested in walking through the 350 acre Henry Lay Center owned by St. Louis University . It has a sculpture park and beautiful trails. Most of the trails are shaded and very clearly marked. There are several lakes. The center is about 10-15 minutes from the house. More information about the center is available on line - check Pike County Missouri Tourism. There is also a good map noting locations of area towns.

The Amish Community in Pike County is located west and south of Bowling Green. The Amish families who first settled in this area in 1948 are one of the stricter sects. For the Amish, farming is the main source of livelihood. All farming equipment is horse drawn. Amish men are excellent farmers and craftsmen featuring handcrafted woodworking cabinets and furniture. Amish women make quilts, rugs, baked goods, jams, jellies and candies. There are several Amish stores in the area. There is a detailed map at the cottage.

During your stay
I like to meet guests as they arrive. However, I can make it a contact-less greeting. We can greet far apart and you can enter the cottage alone. Then, I leave you to enjoy your stay. I am always available for questions. If I am not available, my daughter lives close and she will greet you.

Sometimes guests have unexpected late arrivals. I will give you entry instructions and greet you the next day.

The following is a condensed review from a guest Dec 3-5, 2016. He missed the two week window for review and wanted to share his thoughts. They were wonderful guests.

Beautiful oasis in the Missouri hills.

My wife and I wanted a simple, quiet anniversary getaway, without having to travel far. We could not have found a more wonderful place to spend this time than this lovely (yet modern) home, nestled in 14 quiet acres, less than 90 minutes from St. Louis.  As soon as we made the reservation, Paulette reached out to us with great directions and other useful information.  And she was very responsive throughout and beyond our stay

Bowling Green is about 10 minutes away, and has the dining and shopping you'd expect of a small town that's also a county seat. We had a delicious dinner at a very nice Mexican restaurant Paulette recommended (Dos Primos).  Nearby were perhaps a half-dozen chain and fast-food restaurants, as well as a couple of local diners, plus a County Market grocery and Super Wal-Mart should you need anything.

Though this was our first time using Airbnb, we've used other competing sites often, and this place is as nice as it gets.  Add to it the amazing hosts, and the incredibly reasonable price, and you won't find a better place to spend quality time by yourself, with family, or friends.
