Enjoy the fall colors and travel back in time to the private Pullman train car, the Constitution. Built in 1905, it served as "Air Force One" for presidents Harding and Wilson. The original car consists of four state rooms, an observation deck, a dining room, and a galley. Two large living rooms with fireplaces, a master bedroom and bathroom have been added on. When the president of Illinois Railway Museum visited, he said it was the most well-preserved Pullman train car in the U.S.

The space

The train car sits atop a bluff overlooking the beautiful slow-moving Big Rock Creek. Beyond the creek is a floodplain full of two hundred-year-old oak trees and an occasional eagle or two! The traincar has a very country feel.

Interaction with guests

One of my family members or I will be there upon arrival to welcome you and give you a tour but will leave as soon as you are settled in.

Other things to note

We hire someone to look after the place. His name is Arne and he lives in the apartment above the garage on the property. You will most likely not come in contact with Arne but he's a good presence if needed.

Just book it! The setup Amy has with the train car is amazing. You feel like you are walking through a piece of history, because you are. It was actually an easy trip for us out from Chicago, only about an hour in light traffic. The towns nearby offered plenty to keep us occupied but the real highlight is just being in this train car in a beautiful wooded area. You can see a river out the back window of the property and you really do not hear anything other than the sounds of night. We look forward to coming back some other time.

Our party of three adults and one 7-year old genuinely enjoyed staying at the Traincar for three nights. Our granddaughter loved her stateroom, the piano in the sunroom, and the fireflies outside at dusk. We were very comfortable and appreciated the special touches the hosts provided. The rural, creek-side setting made the Traincar a great get-away from traffic and crowds, yet being on the edge of the small town of Plano made it convenient, too, for buying groceries, gas, and a couple of fast-food meals. If you enjoy the quirkiness of century-old buildings (the Traincar itself) and add-ons that are already antique you will find this to be a fun place to stay.

Our organization has been searching for a perfect secluded and rustic retreat space close to Chicago for years --- and we finally found it! Amy, Carol, and family are absolutely wonderful and their home is filled with love, timeless treasures, and warmth. If you are looking for a place to retreat, you've found it.

This is a wonderful, quiet, and peaceful place for a vacation - not to mention you get to step back in time in American History. Amy is a great host and excellent at communicating. We would definitely stay here again if the opportunity came up.

Amy and her family were great host, we enjoyed our stay in Plano. The views from the traincar are exceptional with a great nature trail walk into town. I had work to be completed while on vacation and the the traincar provided the perfect work office. This home is not handicap accessible and needs a good spingcleaning.
