At « SHANGRI-LARA », a secluded off-grid haven of Moorish origin, you are truly away from it all. One can literally hear the silence. The view from the terrace across the Mediterranean is spectacular. Yet, 15 minutes away, you may enjoy the beach and the small town of Castell de Ferro. « SHANGRI-LARA » is conveniently situated for many varied day trips. Pets are welcome and can even stay in our kennels while you go out or sightseeing. From Málaga you reach us via motorway A-7 in about one hour.

The space

« SHANGRI-LARA » is a one-of-a-kind 'Cortijo', or country estate, on the Costa Tropical. Dating back to the Moorish times, about 1,300 years ago, it features a unique architecture and atmosphere. Located just 10 kilometres off the coast, at 500 metres elevation, the view from the terrace across the Mediterranean is spectacular. The night sky enchants with a sensational sparkle, undiluted by any light pollution. Here, you are truly away from it all. One can literally hear the silence.

Guest access

Samsára Suite is the largest of three individual accommodations we offer to our guests at « SHANGRI-LARA »:

A spacious, 32 sqm, split-level loft for 2-4 persons, with a private exterior entrance. The room has been tastefully decorated with an ethnic touch from India, featuring custom-made furniture. On its main level you have a sitting room suite with table, two armchairs, a large couch that can sleep a 3rd person if desired, and direct access to the terrace. The lower entrance level has an open closet with hangers . The upper floor features a grand king-size double bed and you have a beautiful view over our valley and the Mediterranean beyond through the south-facing window.

Samsára Suite has a private entrance and another door that leads to our spacious common room for guests, The Lounge, with an open-plan kitchenette, large dinner table, fridge, toaster, microwave, and washing machine. There is also a shared bathroom with toilet and shower, and you have access to a south-facing terrace with a canopied dinner table and a splendid view. A small BBQ is ready for your use. Free and fast 20MB WiFi is constantly available in the common area, The Lounge, and on the terrace. Fans are provided for the summer, gas and electric heaters for the winter months.

Samsára Suite would be a great choice for a couple wanting a large room during a longer stay or a romantic weekend, or for a family / small group of friends that need an additional bed.

Interaction with guests

« SHANGRI-LARA » welcomes people of all nationalities, backgrounds, and orientations! We are “everybody-friendly”, that's right. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As we live next door, we are on-hand should you require our assistance or advice. We are attentive to every guest and will make you feel at home, but absolutely respect your privacy if you are on a romantic getaway or come here to meditate, and only look for undisturbed quiet and rest.

However, we do speak English, German, and Spanish, have a sense of humour, and are pretty good listeners too.

Other things to note

CHILDREN
Babies and infants, naturally under their parents' close supervision, are most welcome at « SHANGRI-LARA »! We excluded age 2-12 from the official listing only because we consider our estate not safe enough for children at any "wild" age (above infancy) that might be more difficult to watch — this property is really large with steep hillsides and many slopes and could inspire a curious young mind, if left unattended, to carelessly explore the area on its own and fall off a cliff. We simply do not want the responsibility for that! However, each child (and parenthood) is different and you know best what yours is like. You can contact us and share some details to check what's suitable on an individual level.

PETS
Pets, if healthy and vaccinated, are welcome at « SHANGRI-LARA » too! We have our own pack of three well-behaved dogs that guard the property at night (for your safe sleep as we are in a secluded location) yet are friendly to guests without being bothersome, plus one cute cat (that mostly cares about herself and doesn't have a job). If you bring along your own darling, he/she can even stay in our supervised kennels if you should want to go on a relaxed day trip on your own, as not all dogs are crazy about shopping, let alone permitted at certain sightseeings. We will feed and walk your dog in your absence, so you can enjoy yourself anywhere you go without having to worry. If you are into cats, mind you...we have a safe cattery room as well.

OFF-GRID LIFE
« SHANGRI-LARA » is a 100% off-grid country estate, i.e., we are fully solar-powered (220~230V), dispose of our garbage at best practice available, and have our own natural spring and a clean water reservoir.
As water shortages are a common occurrence in warm climates like southern Spain, we are conscious about resources and encourage their responsible use. We hope you appreciate this friendly reminder and do share our notion!

Living off-grid has been a lifestyle decision for us, towards gaining more independence and a deeper sense of awareness, and we are happy to share some ideas and our little knowledge if someone is interested.

IMPORTANT GUIDELINES for new guests:
————————-•-————————
• We are trustworthy people with good manners, and would expect our guests to be the same.

• 21st century — We do not accept racists or '-phobes' of any kind. Period.

• If you stay at « SHANGRI-LARA » with a child, you will take full responsibility and make sure it is well supervised. Some areas of the estate could be dangerous for young children, if left unattended, or for anyone acting irresponsibly. DISCLAIMER: We take no charge for accidents or damages should they occur. Please always use common sense or, if in doubt, ask for our advice.

• If you bring along your pet please make sure it's healthy, with relevant vaccinations and flee/tick prophylaxis in place. Our strict policy has helped to keep the facilities clean and remain a safe haven despite the hot climate and wide-spread lack of awareness defining this region.

• Water shortages are a common occurance in the south of Spain.
Luckily, « SHANGRI-LARA » operates 100% off-grid and we generate enough to use what is needed, but not more than that, thus kindly encourage responsible consumption of resources. We hope you appreciate and share our notion.

• Show respect to other individuals and the surrounding nature, and leave the place as you would like to find it again.

It is an appart place located in the mountain with good views but with a difficult access with a only-one-way road of sand not a good option for every car since the way is full of plants and rocks. Ralph is a nice man, with a perfect level of english and speaks also spanish, we felt confortable with his company. The water of the bathroom and kitchen is not drinkable and it has a terrible smell which made us buy our own bottles even also for our brush teeth because the flavour and smell doesnt allow any other option. In general the place is peaceful and appart maybe a good option for meditation or relax period but consider it other options too because the price is not correct in our opinion if we consider the quality of some of the things before described. Ralph has 3 dogs and at least one cat in case you have some alergie. In general lines you can find better price-quality places in the area but maybe not so peaceful.

Response from Christina & Ralf:
Thanks for your review. The water is indeed not recommended for drinking. With the current temporary summer water shortage, it has to be brought in from outside and the quality can not always be controlled. Visitors to Andalucia will be familiar with this. This is a larger issue for the government, but I rest my case. Access to the house is only a problem if you are not a confident driver. Trucks come down here all the time to deliver goods and, yes, the water. All tracks in the area are narrow but can be negotiated easily by most people. You did add to the access issue significantly, however, by parking your car in the middle of the track, which completely blocked it for all traffic, all night. Generally speaking, we find that a vast majority of guests appreciate the value for money. There will always be those who are not even happy in paradise. I do hope you can remember us fondly, nevertheless. Btw, and regarding the allergy issue (thanks for mentioning it ;), there are two cats in the yard, life used to be so hard...

The beautiful stillness of this place is enchanting and allows the soul to shine and the body to deeply rest. Great place to be creative or contemplative! The local beach is unspoiled by mass tourism. We loved our time here!!!

Our stay at Ralf's place was a very different experience to your typical stay, in a very positive way. The whole look of the house is very special and they've decorated the rooms very thoughtfully, making the modernized look work with the old building. Ralf was very helpful throughout our stay and would highly recommend him as a host. He has three lovely dogs (one of which we never got to meet) who genuinely enjoyed seeing you everyday when you open up your door. The views are incredible with his house being up on a hillside which makes the overall stay more pleasant. Though we had a slight problem with flies outside to which is at no fault of the host but it made it sometimes difficult to stay outside when you're being pestered by flies. As specified in the description there is internet available but in our suite we were only able to connect to it when we were sat outside which was a bit of a downside but we dealt with it. Also in the description of the place Ralf mentions his 'passable' track which is true to a degree but do be careful not to be too cautious of the verge as we were and managed to get a puncture through passing too closely to the plants which we think is covering up sharp rocks. After dealing with the puncture we passed through the mountain track several other times and through being cautious didn't ruin another tyre. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend :)

Thanks for your review, Alice. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. As per the description, internet is available in the Lounge and on the terrace. The track is passable for all kinds of vehicles, trucks pass through here without problems. It really is a matter of staying in the centre of the track. And it certainly is a good thing to remember for future guests.

My son and I had a great experience at Ralf's place. What an adventure! The rustic charm of this hillside oasis captivates you as you roll down the mountain track. As quiet as nature intended at night and beautifully serene in the daytime, this gem is perfect to slip away for some peaceful zen time. While the exterior is characterized by crumbling walls and years of history, inside is a cozy and comfortable space with a wonderfully appointed modern kitchen and bathroom. Ralf was very accommodating and made our stay the perfect balance of privacy and service. Thanks!

We were honored to be Christina and Ralf's very first guests at Shangri-La. They have done a wonderful job with restoring their old cortijo into a comfortable and charming home. The view from the Samsára Suite is simply wonderful, and although secluded and 'away from it all' it only takes about 15 min. to get to the (pebble) beach of Castell de Ferro, a small town where you can buy all your necessities. We did not meet Christina, but Ralf was very accommodating and their 3 (very well-behaved) dogs were a bonus. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend Shangri-La!

We have lived in and visited many countries and love to meet people. We also love to provide a place to get away from it all. « Shangri-Lara » is just that. Come and join us for a while in this little piece of paradise. We enjoy music, good food, philosophical discussions on the terrace under the stars, inspiration coming from experience and out-of-the-box thinking. It's never too late to start a new adventure. Just chilling is absolutely fine, too...
