The space

The building.
Our house is a display of Qing Dynasty craftsmanship at its finest. This stone, wood, and brick home has been standing proud for nearly 150 years. Our careful renovation has ensured the continued life and enjoyment of the house in its original beauty.

Find Peace.
Our place has been designed with an aura of peace in mind. Come here for a break from the Chinese city life and to absorb the countryside around you. Read, write, meditate, and be free in a welcoming setting.

Modern Comfort.
While preserving the authentic architecture, we've made the upgrades that are necessary for clean and comfortable living. A hot shower, fast internet, and an eye for design in the details.

Our 2 houses has 5 bedrooms available for booking, each with a large bed that easily sleeps two guests.

Each bedroom has its own private, adjoined meditation and study room in which an extra sleeping arrangement can be arranged if desired.

Guests will share a common bathroom and common toilet room.

Our 5 bedrooms are listed on separate pages on Airbnb (numbered 1-5), each with its own calendar of availability.

Fresh and healthy vegetarian meals are prepared daily (lunch and dinner) by a local woman from our village. The cost of meals is 25RMB (children 10RMB) per person per meal.

Breakfast is free and you may help yourself when you wake up - an assortment of local fruits, oatmeal, eggs, coffee and tea.

Interaction with guests

Maarten, Eric, and Hua set up this airbnb together. These days, They are often away from the village.

Haibo is currently taking care of the house, and will be present daily to interact with guests. He is an angel of a human being, always extremely caring, trustworthy, and respectful. Haibo has been diligently studying English with us since 2013 and feels blessed to have the opportunity to build his confidence by interacting with guests. Be patient with him, and rest assured that Haibo is doing all that he can to make you feel welcome and taken care of as a special guest to his village.

With Haibo's level of English in mind, please try not to ask too many or too complicated of questions before booking. As soon as you make a booking (Airbnb will not allow it beforehand) we will email you our guidebook containing all of the information that you will need to survive and thrive in the village. It will answer most any questions that you may have, including information about arriving at our place. Again, to make Haibo's job easier, please wait until you receive our guidebook before sending him many questions.

Other things to note

Although we have designed our home as a place to find peace among the fast pace of China, please remember that we are located in a rural village in a developing country. Willingness to be adaptable and respectful are important in being able to enjoy your stay.

Also, this is not a hotel or hostel. In saying that, we really hope people will feel at home, but we also appreciate guests helping out, taking initiative, and being independent, as this is the way we have designed this experience.

We had the most incredible stay at Lajoia. This is without question the best Airbnb I've ever stayed at. Haibo was an amazing host and checked in with us every day to make sure we had a great experience. Our meals were delicious and we spent each day hiking, wandering around the village, and reading/relaxing at the house. Highly recommend!!

This was one of the best experiences I had using Airbnb. I can say that staying at Laojia isn't for anyone, it is an old house in a very remote small rural Chinese village. We were there while the rain season was hitting south china and while we only got one rainy day, it rained so much that day that the local authorities closed the river the next day to small boats. We had plans to walk to XingPing close to the river and return by boat, but it wasn't possible, yet we had the chance to go hiking to XingPing with Haibo's mother though the mountains. It was a long walk but really beautiful and worth full . XingPing wasn't that nice, full with tour groups and souvenir shops everywhere, but the trip there was fantastic. We passed through small rural communities very genuine, beautiful mountains and farmland. Haibo's mother is really nice, like Haibo himself. He is the soul off this place. A fix all guy with a big heart. Mor things we can recommend, go hiking to the mountains with the goat herders for example. Eat the food prepared at the house and drink their tea. I know I will return some day.

It's hard to express how special this place is. Truly a once in a lifetime experience. How often do you get to stay in a tiny village steps away from the Li River being hosted by caring and friendly people and in such comfort? The authentic and sincere people in the village is really what makes this place so amazing. Away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities but with all the amenities that keep you connected and comfortable. We will miss this place and think of it often. As returned Peace Corps volunteers (West Africa) it was a wonderful return to a slower, quieter, deeply personal way of life. Thank you, Laojia!

Absolutely wonderful experience! A beautiful location with a great view of the karst landscape and Li river from every angle. The house has clearly been lovingly renovated with respect to the historic features. Comfy bed with mosquito net. Clean shower and western toilet. A beautiful fish pool and potted plants to gaze at while you eat breakfast. We fried up local eggs with gorgeous orange yolks for breakfast every morning and they were delicious. Haibo was invaluable in helping us plan activities (hiking with an awesome local man and a day trip to an organic tea plantation). He is honest, helpful, and super friendly. It helps a lot if you can speak Mandarin, but if English is the only option, make sure you speak slowly and clearly. XiaoMo made delicious, healthy food- she was very flexible with dietary restrictions. We don't have any allergies, but a guy who was also staying at Laojia at the same time was gluten-free so XiaoMo made food without soy. It was still very yummy. The shop-owner Mr. Mao was fun to talk to and we made friends with an adorable dog. One of our favorite places we've stayed!

This is was the most beautiful vacation place ever! The hosts were awesome, they picked us up at the airport and took us to the train station. They wrote a very detailed manual about everything. Everyone in the village was super nice, friendly, and very helpful. And one of the hosts was super cute. We wished we had booked the place for longer, since we made friends that will probably last a lifetime. Also, the food was delicious, weather in May was perfect, and it was really clean. There's also mosquito nets and mosquito incense for anyone who is put off by mosquitos. We can't wait to go back. We miss everyone.
