The Chaika is a lovely house on a secluded lot at the end of a street with no other house adjacent and no thru traffic. Beautiful live oak in front gives a nice view out the glassed-in porch. Only a short 5-minute walk to the beach on a rarely-used sandy drive. 5-minute drive to St. Helena sound for calmer waters and great beach combing. Chaika means "seagull" in Russian - read the owner bio for info on why that name. A great house for families and friends to connect! And we are pet friendly.

The space
Please read the whole description below before booking as there are conditions that will impact your stay.

The house is secluded with undeveloped lots on either side and behind us. Being the last house on a no-outlet, sand covered street means very little traffic. The huge live oak tree in the front further makes you feel like you are away from things even though the beach is a short walk. The layout is conducive to 2 families with 2 bedrooms and a bath on each side separated by a large common area in the center.

The house has a glassed porch, front deck, and back porch - all areas to sit and relax, enjoying the area. It is on stilts, so there is additional space under the house for seating, cleaning up (private outdoor shower), and drying wet swimwear. Two small charcoal grills also under the house along with various beach toys. We love to hang hammocks between the supports.

Ask any questions prior to booking by clicking on the "contact host" link below. If you do not have any Airbnb history or reviews, we kindly request you contact us first rather than booking. We'd like to know you a bit before agreeing together to move ahead.

Also note we have seasonal pricing, so until you put the dates in, the price shown is likely not accurate. The pricing is set up for shorter rentals of 3-7 days - please contact us before booking if interested in longer term as there might be further discount, especially in the off-season.

Guest access
Guests will have use of the entire house.

Please note: Bed sheets, pillow cases, and towels are available via a local business - you can find them by searching Edisto Essentials online. (links and numbers not allowed in Airbnb listings). You will save by bringing your own. Plenty of pillows and blankets. We have left plenty of the other "essentials" there (such as soap, detergents, cleaning supplies), but all it takes is one guest to take them, so we suggest you bring this with you or plan to purchase locally. If this is an issue, please do NOT book this property! The kitchen is very well furnished with plenty of dishes, cooking utensils, and small appliances.

Our property is managed by Edisto Realty who handles check-ins and maintenance needs. Our "cleaning fee" includes $70 for sanitizing and the $100 per rental we pay them for management services (Airbnb doesn't have a category for management fees). Please note this fee only covers an inspection and sanitizing. It is not enough to pay someone to clean up a whole house. It is expected that the guests will leave the house at least as clean as they find it. If significant additional cleaning is required, it can be a charge up to $140 against the security deposit.

Other things to note
Please note pet information under "house rules" before submitting inquiry.
Upon arrival, please make note of the guest manual on the kitchen counter. It includes instructions for appliances, information about water, internet access codes, and other useful information to make your stay more enjoyable and safe. Please note the bed in the "common area" is a futon/couch on our glassed-in porch (futon isn't an option for Airbnb!).

Location

Edisto Island, South Carolina, United States

Our street is just before the island turns from facing the ocean to facing the sound, so both are accessible. The bike path begins just three blocks from us and makes a nice loop around the end of the island. Great for walking or biking. The water tower is just a block from us if you want to get fresh drinking water, although the house is equipped with an RO filter for good drinking water from the tap.

I am married and have four adult children and three grandchildren. I love to travel internationally, which I get to do a lot with my job. I work for a nonprofit that has work globally, so I've visited over 75 countries. Our family lived for 10 years in Kazakhstan, so I speak Russian well. Enjoy making new friends and hearing people's stories. When traveling, I like to get out and about - especially love outdoor markets. I'm a bit of a culture and language junky! Our main Airbnb property "Chaika" is located on Edisto Beach in South Carolina. "Chaika" means "Seagull" in Russian and was the name of a famous hotel in the city we lived in. Edisto Beach is our "happy place"! We also occasionally make a basement suite in our home near Atlanta available on Airbnb.
