You can see why we call this the Vine Cabin. In Autumn the bunches of grapes hang down all round the doorEat outside if the weather suits

About this listing

The Vine Cabin is a hand built snug insulated wooden cabin with woodburner, within sight and sound of the River Wreake where you can use our canoes . Sleeps up to 5 (2 in bunks), basic cooking facilities. Canoe building holidays by arrangement. The built in bunk can take 2 people ( increasing the capacity to 6, but they need to be friendly!!). Please bring sleeping bags especially if you are "instant booking".There is no cleaning fee, as our guests kindly keep the place nice before they leave,

The space

There is a double bed with a single bunk above, plus a single bed and a further built in bunk ( which can take 2 children) . Both the bunks are close to the ceiling and are accessible only if you are pretty agile. Please bring sleeping bags. Pillows and towels provided. There is a woodburning stove, and logs are provided.
Have a go in our canoes on the river which runs right by the property. There are two comfortable fishing pegs near the cabin.
In the summer we offer Canoe Building Holidays by arrangement.

Guest access

You will be able to use the canoes on our river, and feed our friendly goat over the fence.
There is a "Futility Room" where you can use the washing machine and large tumble dryer, just leave £1 on each machine if you use it. There is an electric car charging point where we "currently charge" ( no pun intended) £5 for an overnight charge. All our electricity is from green sources ( wind power from the grid, plus 10kW solar array)

Interaction with guests

You can keep yourself to yourself, or you can come and ask us if you need anything, our house is on the same property, just 50 metres from the cabin. I am particularly keen to hear your suggestions about the cabin and things which would make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable. You are always welcome to take a canoe paddling on the quiet river near the cabin.

Other things to note

If you like basic accommodation in a rural setting, you will love it here.
However, if you are looking for Travelodge or Premier Inn, we are NOT it!!
You are welcome to use our canoes on the river here.
We have an electric vehicle charging point available ( currently £5 for an overnight charge)

House Rules
No smoking
Check in time is 5PM - 10PM

No smoking ( except on the landing stage by the river)
Pets are permitted ( but not on the beds, thanks)
Although it says "bring sleeping bags" let us know if you need bedding provided, especially if you are coming long distance. Towels and Pillows provided anyway.
Plenty of parking on the driveway, and in summer time careful drivers can drive right round to the side of the cabin to park
You are welcome to use the Tree House, but please secure the gate when you leave so parents can decide if their children are to go up..
You may feed the chickens and the goat, throw your veg peelings and crusts over the fence to them.
Children must wear buoyancy aids ( these are provided) if they go down to the landing stage, or go on the canoes.
Canoes: these are generally available for use 365 days a year, although not when the river is swollen. However, downstream is a weir, so paddle upstream initially. You will be able to go about 350 metres before the river gets too shallow and fast.

Had a great weekend staying in John's cabin. Canoeing up the river was a new experience and well worth doing.

John and family are so welcoming from the moment you arrive, you are automatically relaxed. This is aided by the beautiful and very tranquil location. That said my rambunctious children weren't an issue , in fact they thrived and made a few new friends, especially Debbie the goat . The cabin is well stocked with all essentials, (Kettle, fridge, microwave and more) the burner ensures you are always warm and toasty, John supplies the wood and even has an honesty box for bonfire wood. The beds and duvets provided were extremely warm and comfortable. The Children really loved the mezzanine level. The canoes and the stretch of river you can explore added to the experience for the whole family . I really can not rate this location and its hosts highly enough and hope to go back soon as possible . I also can not thank then enough for a wonderful week.

Humans and dog alike enjoyed our stay here - the accommodation, surroundings, canoes, friendly goat, tree house with fireman a pole, hammock and friendly host all added up to a great stay (plus we had the bonus of good weather!). John was more than accommodating and we REALLY enjoyed our stay. Better than any other regular glamping pod we've stayed in!! Great value for money :)

The cabin was absolutely what we hoped it would be. John welcomed us when we arrived and was available and helpful during the weekend; the cabin was simple, cosy and characterful; the grounds were full of things for our six and three year old children to do. They loved having the freedom to play and canoeing up the river was great fun. Thanks John for a lovely weekend. We're looking forward to coming back soon. Ian and Tracy.

The wood cabin far exceeds expectations. As someone used to camping this was a luxury, with so many things provided really all you need to bring are clothes and maybe a sleeping bag. The cabin gets really warm, it has enough room to move around comfortably and the welcome gifts are such a lovely touch. We enjoyed our stay so much, that we will be returning in the summer. Thanks again John.

Such an amazing place, the cabin was far better then what the pictures show! It's cozy and warm, great facilities even a slow cooker if you decided to bring a roast :) the people are friendly always saying hello and up for a chat about anything while exploring the great views and walks. Can't wait to book again (if I could I'd love to live in the cabin) :) just a shame the weekend went so quick :(

Hi, we are John and Carole from Brooksby in Leicestershire in the very middle of England. We have 4 children and three grandchildren. We live by a quiet river, and love hosting visitors in our two home built cabins. We first discovered Airbnb has guests in Corfu, and have since been Airbnb guests in Paris, Turin and Hay on Wye.
John runs canoe building holidays here. You may well see canoe building going on during your stay.
