If you want to vacation in a special place with lots of space, this is it. This house was build in the 1890s as a "summer cottage" by Herbert Walker, a famous architect and leader of the Boston Arts and Crafts movement, for himself. It has a large yard and is a short walk away from a private swimming area on Lake Chocorua with an amazing view of Mount Chocorua, one of the most photographed mountains in the world.

The space
This is a special house in a special place. My family has owned it since the early 1960s and it holds many special memories. I live and work in the Boston area ~2.5 hours away and my job does not allow us to spend as much time there as we would like.

This neighborhood combines a beautiful secluded setting with easy access to many popular tourist areas.

Chocorua Lake is one of the best preserved and beautiful lakes in New Hampshire and perhaps the country. Approximately 90% of the land in the entire basin (more than 3000 acres) are protected by conservation easements. The iconic view of the lake from the highway was chosen for the back of the New Hampshire quarter. The lake is pristine. Nearby is Mount Chocorua, one of the most beautiful and most hiked mountains in the area with dramatic 360 degree views from its bald peak.

Our house is one of 15-20 "Summer Cottages" that were built for wealthy Boston families around 1900. Although they are less opulent than the Newport Summer Cottages, the craftsman style of our house and many of the others is much more in keeping with today's sensibilities. Howard Walker, a famous architect and leader of the Boston Arts and Crafts movement, designed this house for himself and his family. Many of the original furnishings and details remain. The house has been written up in several books as an architectural gem.

With a minimum of 10 acres per house, the area is extraordinarily private. The location at the boarder of the lakes and mountain districts of New Hampshire allows you provides easy access to many of the most popular tourist attractions in the state, including the Barnstormers Theater, Kankamaugus Highway, Polar Caves, Storyland, Castle in the Clouds, Lake Winnepausakee, and many more.

We are renting it to keep it occupied and to let others enjoy it when we cannot, but since the place is so special, we like to know a bit about who is coming before we approve them.

Guest access
The entire space is yours, except for some hallway closets that we reserve for our belongings and house supplies.

Other things to note
The house was designed as a summer house with no central heating. There is a wood stove and four fireplaces that can take the edge of the cold in the spring and fall, but we only rent the house from May until mid-October.

The house is a five-minute walk from our swimming area with our boathouse. We share the swimming area with two other families, but we only see them on occasion. The boathouse has several boats that you can use: a canoe, two kayaks, two paddleboards, and a row boat. We also have ~15 life jackets of various sizes and some inflatable floats.

There is also use of a clay tennis court which is about half a mile down the road. It is generally in adequate condition for an informal game, but is not professionally maintained.

I have a wife, three kids, and two dogs. My parents bought our listing in 1964 and we grew up staying there in the summer. Before that it was owned by the family that built it in ~1900.
