About this listing

My loft is on Main street in Old Town Battle Ground close to Old Town Battle Grounds coffee shop and deli 2 doors down on one side, and a yoga studio 2 doors down on the other side. You'll love Old Town with it's 6 antique stores, restaurants, and a skate park all within several blocks, and the Battle Ground Lake State Park and Moulton falls, just a short drive. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travelers, And under 1/2 an hour to Portland airport!

The space

Our loft is a fully contained private space, with it's own entrance, and includes a small kitchen, and private bath. Although we are right on Main Street, the entrance is through the back garden, with lots of privacy, and is very quiet. The property is above my own living space, with my medical clinic and herbal apothecary being separate buildings on the same lot. The loft is stocked with art and craft supplies if you feel like painting, beading, or sewing, and a large 10 by 10 foot deck is yours to relax on. The space is inviting, comfortable, and artsy, with a skylight, wifi, TV, and all the basics. The bed is a brand new memory foam futon that is really comfy! There is a spare memory foam mattress in the closet if needed.

Guest access

You will have your own space, and given the code for the door pin pad to come and go as you wish. I am not much of a night owl, so if you are arriving after 10 pm, we will need to make arrangements, such as getting you the code, or leaving the door open for you.

Interaction with guests

I work on the premises 9 to 5 and can usually get away for lunch and short breaks to interact with guests if I am needed. I am happy to chat and cook together, or just give you your space and peace and quiet, as desired. I like to work out in my yard after work, and we often eat on the back patio during nice weather. You would be welcome to join us!

Other things to note

Because this is a loft, the ceiling is sloped throughout. Access to the space is up a flight of out door stairs, so is not suitable for wheelchairs - sorry! So that we can keep our prices low, we kindly request that guest fully clean up after themselves. We will wash the sheets and towels, if you would please strip the bed. We also request the guests take out the trash regularly to avoid completely filling our garbage can upon termination of longer stays, such that there is no room for our own garbage. (This has happened) We also kindly request that guest use the recycle bins for paper, glass, metal, plastic, as we care about the environment!

We loved the quiet loft in Battle Groud. The shops around there were awesome and it just has a beautiful feeling to it. We loved the people and all the green. Just gorgeous to drive around.

Jillian was friendly, until I had a problem. Then she became passive-aggressive. Once I noticed the top comforter had a weird gross smell (it was subtle at first), I had to communicate it to her. She immediately replied that "wow," I am "extremely chemically sensitive!" Now, I am fairly sensitive, but there's no need to repeat it several times. She kept saying it in response to my questions and concerns. This made me want to cancel my reservation. I shortened my stay and left quickly. Jillian dragged her feet on accepting the modified dates. Defensiveness is not the way to resolve conflict... Who wouldn't mention a musty blanket once they noticed? Maybe you'll have a different experience. It was all fine until conflict arose.

Response from Jillian:
I attempted to immediately address Amanda's concern - which she expressed to me to be A SENSITIVITY TO THE CHLORINE in our city's water, I offered to fill up my own stock pots and bottles with filtered water and bring them to her, but she said that showering in the water was a problem too. I kindly let her out of her contracted time, even though this was at a financial loss to me, and I was under no obligation to do so. I responded to her request that very day, in matter of a few hours, so the "dragging the feet" is untrue. I DO work, and can't be online every minute of the day, but I responded to Amanda in a matter of minutes to hours (I have the email thread to prove it). Amanda mentioned that the bedding had an odd smell "but that she wouldn't mention it in her review." I had just washed the bedding - as I do after every guest, used a natural citrus essential oil dryer sheet, and then laid the bedding out in front of my fireplace for an hour. If anyone is defensive, it would be Amanda in taking offense that I noticed she was sensitive - and it was the reason she wanted out of the contract after all. I didn't even think it was a "conflict" - it was her having a health issue and me trying to solve it the best that I could, it the friendliest, and speediest way that I possibly could. Does this seem defensive to you?: Message from Amanda Hi Jillian. I think I'm going to cut my stay here. I can't drink the tap water, the chlorine in it made me feel sick. I'd like to check out by the end of the day. Mar 10, 2017 Mar 10, 2017 Message from Jillian Hi Amanda, I'm so sorry to hear that. If it helps at all, I have a filter on my kitchen sink, and we could fill up some sort of bottles for you. Not sure if I have any large empty jugs laying around, but we could figure out something. I'm also not sure if it removes all the chlorine, but it probably helps. Or, you could just get a few gallons of spring water from Fred Meyer. That wouldn't be terribly expensive. It is entirely up to you of course, just trying to help solve this. I am running my store today if you care to stop by and fill up some bottles, or a big stock pot? So sorry you are not feeling well, jillian Mar 10, 2017 Message from Amanda Thanks for the advice. I would like to cut my stay short. I don't think I can shower in this water, either. Mar 10, 2017 Message from Jillian Wow, you must be extremely sensitive. So sorry to hear of your difficulties. Message from Amanda ...Some of the sheets smell musty, as though they need to be washed. I have chosen not to mention this in a review, but I need to mention it here. Mar 10, 2017 Message From Jillian Hi again, So sorry - I DID just wash the sheets prior to your arrival, and even aired them in front of my fireplace before folding. I don't know why they would have smelled musty, but perhaps to someone chemically sensitive there is something that escapes my own sense of smell. My apologies, once again. Best wishes to you and your job search jillian

Jillian is a busy physician and author and a lovely person. She was very prompt in responding to all messages before and during the booking. Once I arrived she was hands-off and mostly unavailable. However, she has a part-time handyman who answered most questions and provided extra supplies. The upshot is that you will have a lot of privacy, which is a good thing. The loft is cozy, there is a skylight over the bed (which is suitable for one person only, but there is a spare mattress), the bathroom and cooking facilities are adequate, the property and surrounding neighborhood are great for walking, there is a food bank, an art supply store, a great coffeeshop, a yoga studio, a minimart, five upscale secondhand shops, and four restaurants within a half-block walk. Plus Jillian's natural apothecary is right there. I really enjoyed my stay. I can only begin to imagine how beautiful it would be in the spring or summer when Jillian's plants are in bloom.

My little loft is affiliated with Battle Ground Healing Arts, where I practice medicine a few days a week, and run a natural medicine apothecary a few more days. I also write and research for professional medical journals and teach natural products chemistry around the country. I have been studying ethnobotany and shamanism in the Peruvian Amazon for the last 12 years, and lead ethnobotany field courses into the jungle each July.
