Join our flock for a weekend getaway! Nestled in the scenic Laguna Lake area of SLO and populated by five free-roaming chickens, you'll find a peaceful, newly remodeled retro oasis for two! 5 min from downtown - 10 min from beach - 10 min from Edna Valley wine tasting - walk to Laguna Lake and Irish Hills Open Space trail and iconic Madonna Inn.

The space

Cool and cozy retro style studio, garden, and patio area for hanging out and having coffee. Here, our chickens Dolly, Frenchie, Belinda, Beyonce, and Loretta roam free about the grounds. Ba-kawk!

This unit is best for two people, because it's--well--cozy! Be aware that there is not much space for lounging or additional guests. Although the space is on the smaller side, it features lots of light and charm.

What's "rustic" mean? Our feathered friends free-range about the property, so you will experience a clucking good time. This unit is located in our back garden, where tomatoes grow and bees buzz. The sound of chickens will rouse you in the morning (earplugs are provided by the bed if needed). We do our best to clean up any "chicken drippings" between guests, but this is a rural and rustic environment with gravel, grass, and dirt, so this is not the best environment for your stiletto heels. You get the idea!

Guest access

Mini kitchenette area stocked with dishes,
microwave, sink, mini fridge, coffee maker and coffee.

Rustic hen-speckled patio area for having coffee and enjoying the SLO life! Brand new bathroom with shower (please bring your own toiletries). Comfy full sized bed. Wi-Fi. Private entrance with outside light to help you get in and out at night in the dark (note: It gets quite dark here, so we also provide a flashlight).

Interaction with guests

We love to say hi and give traveling advice! Your hosts are a downtown small business owner and a freelance writer who writes for the local alt weekly paper and the annual VISIT SLO Guide, so you are in luck! We have the local love on tap.

Other things to note

Near gorgeous Irish Hills trail great for mountain biking, hiking!

Walk to breakfast/sushi dining and supermarkets including Whole Foods/drug store for your convenience.

Near wine tasting in Edna Valley.

10 minutes from the beach and moments away from gorgeous Perfumo Canyon - great drive that leads to Avila Beahch and shows views of Morro Bay and all of SLO.

We have two small dogs, Mavis and Peyton Manning, also known to bark from time to time! They do not have access to your private yard.

A lovely calm spot well placed for exploring SLO and central California. The garden – with chickens! – makes it an especially good option.

Hayley was an awesome host and responded very quickly to any messages. Her place is optimally located and allows for easy travel to downtown slo or any surrounding places of interest. The chickens were also very fun to be around as well and never woke me up early. Would gladly stay again and wholeheartedly recommend to others.

What a great space! :) We were in town for a weekend of wedding festivities with most guests staying around the corner at the Embassy. This could not have been a more perfect location for us getting around to downtown and to see friends. It's a small room, but what more do you need when there just to sleep! I also recommend Bliss Cafe for all your meal needs! :) And the chickens were hilarious - quite the curious creatures, be sure not to leave your door open without a watchful eye.

Had a great stay here. It was perfect for our needs and was very stylish. They supplied coffee, cream and sugar which was thoughtful. The chickens are cute and didn't bother us at all (granted we did bring our noise machine). Overall we had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed our stay at the hen house.

Our stay was great, it was a perfect little hideaway. It was very peaceful and private. The chickens were so cute and gave the place a rural feel. Hayley was very accommodating and let me borrow a hair dryer. I would recommend staying here while visiting SLO.

The place is fine. The inside was clean and very usable. Parking was good. Easy access from freeway and close to town. The chicken poop is an issue and the dog parking was obnoxious, but he stopped when we turned off the lights and went to sleep. There were ants coming from the ceiling after some sugar that was left by the host, for the coffee. IF you don't mind those things - It's a good stop over spot.

Hayley User ProfileHayley is a superhost.

Pleased to meet you! I am a freelance food and wine writer and musician from sunny San Luis Obispo, California. My husband, Reid, owns a comic book store downtown SLO (Dr. Cain's Comics) and also enjoys playing music and petting all kinds of dogs. We are odd ducks: We love classic country, punk and bluegrass, raising chickens, vintage shopping, and gardening. We are big on art and good sushi. Wherever we go, we make a point to try the best local restaurants, bars, record shops and thrift stores. We love suggestions for what to do and see. As homeowners and hosts, we understand how important it is to follow the house rules. We are respectful, fun-loving and very appreciative of a good night's sleep! When hosting guests at our "Hen House" we always love to give great local recommendations for coffee, offbeat attractions, or just where to find a quality bite. Please feel free to contact us, and see you soon!
