Nigel's place is perfect if you like stay somewhere remote but still quite accesible. In my opinion, the ferry connections are good. When the whole family is home it can sometimes get a bit hectic but otherwise everything was good and Nigel was a lovely host!

Great room and bathroom in a very special place in the Orkneys. Nigel is a great host and is very well informed about the island sights and history and well.. about everything really. We checked out the local wildlife and military remains, and used Flotta as a base for listing Hoy, which it was perfect for.

We very much enjoyed taking the ferry and hiking to and from Nigel's home and around the beautiful island of Flotta. This is the place to choose if you want an isolated experience off the tourist route and to enjoy genuine island hospitality. The room is cosy with a lovely view and Nigel provided a generous breakfast including his home baked bread . We enjoyed the little Heritage Centre and a simple lunch at the Community Cafe.

Nigel's home is a delightful, peaceful stay on an island with much undisturbed wilderness around it to explore. Flotta is a haven for birdwatchers and botanists! The beaches are spectacular. Nigel is a warm and friendly host and his pet turkey hen is happy to give you all the latest gossip on the island.

My two weeks on Flotta was just what I look for in airbnb. The room is great value for money, it is spacious and tidy as is the adjacent bathroom, which I had largely to myself. Nigel is very welcoming and a good conversationalist. It was no problem using the kitchen and laundry, although it can get busy as you are part of a functioning family space especially when his two young boys are home. Not having a car, it took me 25 minutes to walk from the house to the ferry terminal, although anyone driving past usually offered a lift. It is a small but friendly community that you can get involved in if you want. Bus connections on the mainland are good but not frequent, with some planning I had no ploblem reaching all the main Orkney sights and most islands from here in the first week, the second I spent enjoying the annual St Magnus festival, daytime events only as last ferry back is at 1730hrs. The house is set in farmland and freerange poultry so expect the usual farmhouse noises at dawn.

Nigel was a really good host. We have enjoyed our stay at his home. He was a really nice person to speak with and a nice guide to help to organize our trip. So, don't be afraid to come on flotta it's not a big issue to travel within orkney. Especially if you have a car.
