Description

The space

This is my personal home that I sublet when I travel or am working out of town; it's a very secluded, private one bedroom A-frame house that I've lived in for eight years.

I charge $500/week or $95/night, which basically covers my rent. This includes all utilities (no landline) and WiFi. My house is suitable for one person or a couple, but no more than that; it's approximately 900 square ft.

Since I've lived here I've built a raised-bed vegetable garden and seating area out front with an outdoor fireplace and BBQ. I also have back deck with potted herbs and plants, and the yards have fruit trees (lemon, lime, orange). There are also two neighborhood kitties who arrive each morning to be fed and petted, but don't come into the house. Therefore, I stipulate no pets.

The house is lovely, with hardwood floors, beautiful built-ins and french windows. It is from the 1920's so it can get dusty. I generally recommend sweeping every other day.

Of course, no smoking. Please respect this; if there are indications of smoking inside my home, the security deposit will be forfeit.

I do require a deposit since all of my books, very nice furniture, vinyl collection and turntable live here while I'm away, as well as my expensive sheets and grandmother's china.

This is my home. I welcome responsible and respectful, friendly and considerate folks a very peaceful lovely place to stay in a great LA neighborhood.

Guest access

My home is an easy commute to Occidental College, USC, Cal State LA, and downtown, and adjacent to Eagle Rock, Elysian Park, Highland Park and Echo Park/Silverlake. In LA you need a car; nothing is really walking distance except the local bar, the Verdugo- which is great.

Interaction with guests

As I am normally out-of-town when I sublet, we will not likely meet in person. However, I am reachable via cell phone and email anytime.

The neighbourhood

I'm located in a cul-de-sac at the base of Mt. Washington, a very old LA neighborhood. The area is exceptionally quiet, and I know all my neighbors- including my landlord who lives around the corner and may check in from time to time. He's lived in the area for over 50 years, when it was mainly an Italian neighborhood. Now it's mostly Hispanic, but gentrifying rapidly. It's a very diverse, friendly community and I'd like to keep it that way! There is a driveway for off-street parking and street parking is also plentiful. There's also a park, recreation center and public pool within walking distance.

Getting around

My house is within 4 blocks of the Metro Bus Lines 28 and 83, off Eagle Rock Blvd in Northeast Los Angeles, and approximately 1 mile (15-20 minute walk) from the main Metro Lines and 94 on San Fernando Road.

For those with a car, my home is in close proximity to the 5 and 2 Freeways (Fletcher Dr and Verdugo Road exits, respectively).

Other things to note

Please note that this is not a dedicated rental unit, but my personal home. You will see details of my daily life and presence; it will not be sterile or 'hospital-clean', like a hotel! Hopefully since you are searching on AirBnB this is already understood.

House Rules

Since this is my personal home, I expect guests to respect my living space and my belongings. This means treating my home as they would their own or that of their closest friend, and leaving it as they found it, as well as contributing to harmonious relationships with my neighbors and community.

Nancy's is a quiet and peaceful home close to downtown LA and the eastside neighborhoods.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Nancy's home for 2.5 weeks and had a great time. It looks exactly like in the pictures and is just like described in the ad. The house is charming and light-filled and has nice old build-ins and furniture. The bed is very comfortable and the sheets were wonderfully soft. There is a washer and a drying rack for the laundry on the backdeck. Drying the laundry was very quick in the Southern California sun - on some of the hotter days, things would be dry after barely an hour, no electric dryer needed. The neighborhood is cozy and very quiet, so it really doesn't feel like you're in the middle of LA. There's a big orange tree in the front yard and a lemon and a lime tree in the back yard - very exotic for me (and delicious, too!). Contact with Nancy was great. She was always quick to answer my questions, even though she was out of the country when we were there. We did our best to keep all her plants alive and well, and would have succeeded (minus one accidentally murdered stalk of kale, sadly), but near the end of our stay gophers invaded the vegetable bed, leading to some surreal Bugy Bunny style veggie vanishing acts. I hope the gophers have moved on to other pastures and the rest of Nancy's veggie bed survived!

The house had a very good energy, lists of reading material, open windows, great natural lighting despite being cornered and covered with vines. Kind of has a cottage feel to it, lived in and not as clean or cobweb free as a hotel would be, but I think that adds flavor and character, the host is seemingly nice but will become very but picky at time of check out and expect the home to be professionally cleaned even after you pay a cleaning fee and it is NOT professionally cleaned when you arrive. If you are not a fan of small flies, moths, bees and spiders I wouldn't suggest this place, but if you're a nature lover like myself, you'll love it. Bring extra cleaning supplies for the barroom and let the water run for a min or two until it clears up from the yellow stage. The fridge is full so don't plan to store much in it and it leaks occasionally. The neighbors are cool and the cats come every morning (2) they don't bother you and are kind of cute! Don't forget to water the plants on the back deck or the host will accuse you of killing them, whether you've been there for three days or three month somehow it will be your fault. (Quite childish) . Other than issues with the host contacting me prior to leaving about cleaning that should have been done prior to arriving... And small creatures (spiders and other insects) who seemed to have the same reservations as me the bed is cozy and waking up to the sounds of that neighborhood was awesome!

Response from Nancy:
Cherish, while I'm glad you enjoyed part of your stay and found positive aspects of my home, as your communication and this review indicate, I wish I had enjoyed having you and Jeffrey as guests. It's very clear from my listing that I live in my home when I'm not traveling and hosting AirBnB guests, that it is a bungalow built in the 1920's (with the expected requisite older plumbing) and that it can get dusty. I honestly don't appreciate the misrepresentation of my living space or it's condition. As it was swept, mopped, dusted and left in pristine condition when I left town 3 days prior to your arrival, your description does not accurately represent the state of my home. Also, AirBnB is not a hotel; a cleaning fee is not meant to encourage people to be disrespectful of one another personal spaces. After your departure and the state you left my home in, I had to spend over 8 hours cleaning to restore it to a liveable condition. It was so bad I couldn't even sleep there the night I returned. As I had to be reimbursed out of the Security Deposit for costs/damages by AirBnB after you and Jeffrey became hostile, insulting and refused to cooperate, your comments above seem especially dishonest, 'picky' and 'childish'. In my close to 4 years as a host/guest, this is the most negative experience I have ever had, and my living space was not treated respectfully. I say this not as a personal judgement, but to offer an opportunity to reassess your position and practices if you consider yourself a respectful guest.

I had a great stay! The neighborhood is charming and the area very quiet. I felt so comfortable, and slept like a baby. The host even dropped me off at me next destination at the end of my stay! Highly recommended!!

Nancy's lovely home is in a superb location! We really enjoyed our time in Eagle Rock, ate at Lemon Poppy Kitchen, shopped at Trader Joe's and took some nice shots of the valley below. The reason why we had to cut our stay short was the very slow wifi connection. Though Nancy tried her best to help by calling her provider and giving us some other tips the "snail speed" became a dealbreaker as we had to work. For everyone not so depending on highspeed connectivity we can absolutely recommend Nancy's house. Enjoyed a little gardening while we were there, very relaxing.

Response from Nancy:
Siems, thanks for the positive feedback on my home. Although I'm aware my WiFi is not the fastest on the planet, I'm sorry it was such a problem for you; this is the first time any of my guests have had any issue with WiFi. As I researched during your stay, at this time my current provider doesn't offer a faster connection. I am investigating switching DSL providers based on your feedback. All best to you and Matthias.

A charming and quiet place to stay. Nancy was accommodating as this was a last minute reservation. I also appreciated that she was agreeable to changing my dates when plans changed. The bed was very comfortable and the house offers everything you would need for a short stay. The neighborhood is peaceful and the neighbors were very friendly. As another reviewer mentioned, the house does seem to attract dust, because of the location, which may be a problem if you have allergies. Otherwise, I had a very nice stay. Overall, a comfortable accommodation I would recommend, especially to those looking for a place removed from the busier neighborhoods of LA.

We had a lovely stay and enjoyed Nancy's cozy home. First things I noticed were the wood in the interior is absolutely beautiful and the bed is very cozy! There isn't much space for storing your things, so just be aware of that. We stayed for some days, left for the weekend and then returned the following week. It is a "rustic" type home and we had a little issue with allergies because it's just one of those homes that collects a bit of dust. However, after mentioning this, upon our return the second week, I could tell Nancy had made the extra effort to get rid of some of the dust - so the second half was much better! The neighborhood is cute - we loved the public pool down the street and trivia night on Tuesdays at Verdugo was so much fun! Lemon Poppy Kitchen is a must for breakfast/brunch.
