Come to enjoy a quiet retreat with wildlife, creek, prairie and woods. It is 10 miles to Wisconsin Dells, 7 miles to Portage, 35 minutes to Madison. It is 25 miles from Devil's Lake state park hiking trails, the Big Cat Sanctuary, International Crane Foundation, and ten miles to Cascade Mountain skiing resort. Baby wildlife now!

On National Historic Registry for Indian mounds, artistic & literary history.

Good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and families (with kids).

The space
Bonnie Oaks has 72 wooded acres with 8 acres of restored prairie. It has a barred owl population and throughout the year, downy and red-headed woodpeckers, migratory indigo buntings, grosbeaks and the occasional scarlet tanager. This property belonged to the International Crane Foundation for ten years and was a study area for some of the first sand hill cranes in the state. The property has a creek running its length ( where canoes and kayaks can be launched) and is sanctuary to deer, turkeys, groundhogs, raccoons, black and grey and red and sometimes flying squirrels. I have had coyotes singing in the woods, but have never seen them or had them disturb any pets. What attracted me is the diversity of landscape - prairie, creek, woods, open space. I am hoping the little foxes return this spring to have their family in the woods.

Guest access
Guests can walk the woods and prairie. They can launch canoes and kayaks into Neenah Creek ( which is more like a river ). Since hunting and trapping seasons last from mid-September through mid-April, I prefer that people do not bring dogs here, as they scare the wildlife into harm's way. Also, with a wooded property, the chance that dogs could bring in ticks is a concern in Wisconsin.
Guests are welcome to walk on the trails. The log house has a screened porch that looks over the barns and open space to the creek.

Other things to note
There are great restaurants in Wisconsin Dells. I am most familiar with The Cheeze Factory in Baraboo which is famous for its food and desserts. Nearby, a mile north on the way to the Dells, The Pheasant Inn in Briggsville is a favorite for more traditional Wisconsin fare.

There is no grilling or fire pit provided. This property is heavily wooded, with dry leaves, brush piles and antique wooden buildings. So no candles or open flames inside or out.

The price on the calendar per night is for 4 guests or less. If more than 4 guests book, each guest over the 4, pays an extra $25/night for the stay. That is for any guests of any age.

If guests ask to bring a pet, I do charge $25/night extra per pet and then I provide a couch cover. It is preferable since the pet will be in a strange place, if the guardian can bring along a crate in case the pet must be left alone while guests are gone. Bringing a pet involves dialogue with, and permission from, the host before that can happen.

This is a rural property. I chose it for the woods, prairie, and creek which give a diversity of birds, including owls and cranes, and wildlife. The house is set back from the roads, through the woods, for quiet and peace.

I am a journalist, artist and wildlife / living earth activist. I write the Madravenspeak living wildlife column for the Capital Times online newspaper. It is published every other Sunday online and the entire archive of five and a half years of columns can be found on the Capital Times web site by putting Madravenspeak into the search box. I am a poet, painter ( oils ), writer, and progressive activist for justice, peace, and respect for all life. I have traveled to Europe many times, hitch-hiked across north Africa, visited Czechoslovakia, Hawaii, Mexico and Canada. I cannot live without respect for farm animals, wildlife, pollinators, amphibians, and a climate that sustains life. I cannot live without healthy oceans, GMO labelling and an end to trapping and killing wildlife for recreation. I cannot live without bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars, jaguars, elephants, rhinos, lions and tigers. I cannot live without a healthy web of life that supports all life.
