Maia Guest House was home to the photographer Laudalino Pacheco and his family of five. Always ahead of his time, Laudalino designed the house to have 7 bedrooms to accommodate family, friends, hitchhikers, tourists and anyone in need of a place to rest.
Maia Guest House under construction 1955
Laudalino da Ponte Pacheco was born in Maia on the 25th of June of 1921 and passed away in the 7th of August 1998 in the same town. He worked in Maia's Tobacco factory for 51 years alongside his brother and, later, his son of the same name. Although battling the financial problems of the time, Laudalino was considered a modern man. He was passionate for learning from emigrants and tourists coming from America, having always his doors open for guests. The career in photography started in the sixty's, when an in law living in the USA gifted him a camera.
During the following decades, Laudalino recorded a wide variety of the typical daily activities and events in the north shore of São Miguel island. Passionate and eager to capture every moment, he acquired a motorbike which he used as transportation to be present at weddings, baptisms, funerals, pig slaughters and festivities. In those days, cars were a commodity of the rich.
Laudalino's family, house and motorbike
Aware, or not, of the historical importance and sentimental value of his pictures Laudalino kept a very organized library of negatives, sorted by dates and events. His son, who shares the same name, took up the very important task of making his work available to everyone. Over the last years, Laudalino (Jr) has uploaded hundreds of digitally remastered pictures. The locals and families, as well as tourists, but particularly the elderly and the emigrants, rejoice themselves as they get to relive their youth as they identify their long gone friends and family members.
