Black Bear Cabin offers a clean, charming and comfortable place to stay while you explore the Stanislaus National Forest and high country Wilderness areas. We are located conveniently just off Hwy 108 with excellent year round access, barring winter storm road closures. The cabin is family friendly with a fenced yard and also pet friendly for clean well behaved, fully house trained dogs. We also welcome singles, couples and small groups of friends. Restaurants and food stores are nearby.

The space

Black Bear Cabin is an old structure with previous lives: once a doughnut shop and long ago a logging office. Before our renovation it was the office for the old Sonora Pass Resort, which was a motel and restaurant/bar. Very poorly taken care of for many years, we've started a long renovation to save this lovely place and the cabin was our first remodel. Since then the restaurant has been remodeled into our beautiful home. We plan to begin the next stage soon.
The cabin has two sort of small bedrooms; one with a queen bed, table and chair, and the other with two twin beds, a dresser, and a rocking chair. The main room has the kitchen, a dining table that accommodates six, a futon, an upholstered rocking chair and a love seat with a large matching ottoman. Very cozy. The bathroom is accessed through the queen bedroom and has a shower and toilet.
The heat is provided by a free standing propane fireplace that is thermostat controlled. The cabin can be cooled with the swamp cooler in the main room. We provide a child gate if requested.
The floors are bamboo which is easy to clean and wipe up snow puddles. The covered front porch is a good place to take off boots and towel off a snowy dog. There is a fence around a small front yard that is a safe place for small children and pets.

Guest access

The parking area is big and we invite guests to park anywhere in that space. For loading and unloading guests may pull up to the several steps that lead to the cabin. We own all the property surrounding the 1 acre pond and guests are welcome to any part of that and the small boat dock. Fishing is allowed catch and release with crimped hooks. You must carry a license. The row boat is also available but we are missing the oars and currently have paddles. (we're looking for oars). The large meadow is also ours and guests are welcome there as well. Our property includes the dirt road behind the cabin.
The Sonora Pass Road is about 300' from the cabin and road noise can be heard if the windows are open. At night it is silent, and after Labor Day and before Memorial Day there is a noticeable difference. Only two guests have mentioned this to us. Most guests love the access.

Interaction with guests

We prefer a phone call if you need assistance. If you see us around outdoors of course we are available to assist you at any time. Just ask.

Other things to note

If the pond is frozen please don't just go out there to slide around without having us test the depth of the ice. We'll drill a hole in it to make sure it's thick enough to walk on.
There is an in ground pool on the property which is not listed as an amenity due to the rough condition of the bottom. We use it primarily as a reservoir for fire protection.
Some people are surprised that there is daytime road noise. Summer is busy, others seasons not so much.

We had a lovely 3-night stay at the cabin. It was comfy and cozy, and had lots of beautiful hikes and viewing vistas nearby. We drove to Yosemite one of the days, which was about a 1 hour and 45 minute drive. Judith and Mike were wonderful and helpful, and we were glad to be so close to the forest. The bathroom is only accessible through the master bedroom (which they mention in the description), just something to be aware of. Would totally recommend (and go back) for another trip. Check the weather beforehand, it got chilly in the evenings!

So sorry. We had two very big furry dogs in a couple of weeks ago and it appeared that the single guest didn't use that room at all. I was wrong. So sorry. Judith

The lodge is well situated next to the forest and easy to find. Ideal for 4 people, it is very clean and cocoon. The garden is surrounded by a gate and a door, like that the small childeren will are safe. The kitchen is well aquiped. The forest is near easy to do a walk. Judith is very sympathetique and discret.

Thank you for your very kind review. We're happy you were pleased with the accommodations. The hot water shower is sometimes difficult but most people do ok. I will consider writing instructions. Thank you so much. Have a great trip. Judith

Fantastic cabin, a short drive away from Pinecrest. Came here with my girlfriend and we found the cabin was very spacious, clean and welcoming. Judith is a great host. She was understanding and accommodating with check-in after I explained I wouldn't be able to make the check-in window, set up a campfire for us one evening and arranged for our keys to be sent back to us after we left them behind. I didn't see her during my stay but she was still very easy to reach by phone or e-mail. Great place for a little quiet and relaxation.

Great little cabin fairly close to hiking and the lakes etc! Was easy to find and clean! Had a great time and would recommend staying here. There's no cell service but the wifi worked for sending messages etc and it's nice to get off the grid anyway so it was actually a plus for me! She was easy to reach if I had questions before and during the stay as well :)

Perfect cabin for a small family! We decided to stay in a cabin instead of camping up at Pinecrest this year. Judith and Michael's cabin was just what we needed for our family with three small kids. The enclosed yard was perfect to let the kids play while we got ready to go to the lake. The pictures don't do the cabin any justice. It's newly remodeled and absolutely lovely. The cabin was just a quick 10 minutes to Pinecrest Lake and is right off the highway. We are already planning our next trip to come stay and explore more in Long Barn. Thank you thank you!

I'm a semi retired person now launching a lodging business with my husband Michael. We are renovating an old Lodge property, saving it from a long period of neglect and terrible care. Our cabin is is the first unit to be completed for a rental, and we just finished turning an old bar/restaurant into our beautiful new home.
This property is well known and loved by locals. When completed there will be 7 units: the cabin, 2 apartments and 4 single rooms. We do care, and this lovely property will be loved and cared for as it should be.
We are pretty easy going people. We respect other's privacy and expect the same.
Things we like:
Great food, gorgeous scenery, good friends, happy family and our fur family...3 dogs.
