Experience an architect-designed, free-flowing, 215sqm industrial penthouse apartment in an historical landmark in the heart of the city. 3 levels of living, a clever use of indoor outdoor space and views of the city and Table Mountain from your rooftop deck, makes this the perfect holiday pad! Great for couples, solo adventurers or friends. You will love this place for it's comfort, space, location, amazing views and the feeling of being in a New York City style loft...but in Cape Town!

The space

This beautiful, two bedroom, penthouse loft apartment is located on the top floor of the well-known, historical ‘Wellington Fruit Growers Building’ - a tall, narrow, terracotta clad landmark sandwiched between Longmarket and Darling street, in the heart of the City. Designed and built in the early 1900’s by Sir Herbert Baker’s office, it has since been revamped and converted into mixed/residential use in 2005.

You will fall in love with the size and absolute luxury of space - 215 square metres spread over three levels. With high ceilings and large windows, the expansive openness of this historic warehouse space oozes industrial charm, beautifully warmed by original wooden parquet flooring, exposed brick and woodwork.

Bottom level:
As you enter the apartment you will pass through a study area on your right, leading into the first room/bedroom ahead of you - with a comfortable hanging futon bed, a separate wet room shower with guest loo and large stack doors opening onto a sunny, central courtyard which serves as a light source, demarcating the various living areas and providing access to the natural elements.

On the other side of the courtyard you will find double-volume, open plan living areas:
A fully fitted kitchen with open shelving, equipped with a gas cooker and all the mod cons for happy holiday entertaining!
An oversized farm-style dining table in the centre of the kitchen with more large stack doors that can open out onto the courtyard again, opening up the flow completely.
Comfortable couches, sprawling rugs, a swinging chair and an oversized colourful bean bag/poof in the living area allow you to ensconce and escape into a good book or relax after a day/night on the town. A biofuel fireplace can be lit on chilly winter nights, warming up the whole area.

A storeroom with washing machine and tumble dryer completes the bottom level.

Middle level:
Floating metal stairs from the lower bedroom take you up to a large en-suite mezzanine bedroom - a glass box of sorts, with a ceiling of reeds and large windows which open to the courtyard below.
A large bathroom with twin basins and Victorian bath, is separated from the bedroom with glass partitioning, retaining once again, a lovely sense of space.

Roof top:
A walkway from the mezzanine bedroom takes you up to the roof deck, which will make you realise why you wanted to come to Cape Town - with fantastic views of the iconic Table Mountain, the city hall clock tower and the Stellenbosch mountains in the distance and the majestic Art Deco Mutual Heights building right next to you. A wooden corner-bench and coffee table makes for the perfect place to enjoy your first cup of coffee and watch the city waking up below you...or a sundowner of choice while watching the city lights come to life as the sun sets.

*10 October 2017: We have been made aware that the lift is currently out of order. The building manager has arranged for it to be repaired. and hopefully it will be back up and working asap.

On the 7th floor.

Guests will be given their own set of keys and have the apartment to themselves.

Water restrictions:

Due to severe water restrictions and the current drought in Cape Town, the pool is currently out of order.

Other things to note

This apartment is not child-friendly, in fact it is not intoxicated-friendly either ;) - the awesome staircase to the main mezzanine bedroom is totally open to one side and the balustrade is suspended from the roof, so it swings about a bit. The same goes for the upstairs dressing room - watch your step!

The courtyard stack doors are enormous and made from wood. They need to be gently coaxed, in a straight line. Handle with care.

The futon bed on the lower level is a suspended / hanging futon bed.

The apartment is very well located to all attractions if not a short uber away, very close to city sightseeing HQ. The apartment itself is stunning, spotlessly clean and well furnished with a washer/dryer as well as a bath and shower. The apartment feels secure, however in the winter months it is very cold, the main heating system is in the living area which is almost seperate to the main bedroom. There is one small fan heater in the bedroom but this doesn't do much, if you are staying in the winter months just pack warm bed clothes. Otherwise we could not fault our stay here and would return, just maybe in the summer!

High WOW factor in this trendy penthouse. Not for small children or the inebriated because of the sharp drops on the top floor and unprotected stairway but the designer had incredible vision converting this space. Modest street entrance and stairway increases the surprise when you open the door. Cape Town is cold midwinter at night and huge spaces are not easy to heat - very characterful area right in the heart of things. The bath is not for the shy as you are on full display to the block of flats next door! Wonderful to see the top of Table Mountain from the bed. Don't bother with hiring a car if you are not going far as Uber is so easy and inexpensive in Cape Town. Max's company manage around 250 places in Cape Town and they are super efficient right through the process. Emailed at 6.00 am one morning when we ran out of electricity and got an instant code back. We very much enjoyed our stay.

A great apartment in central Cape Town close to historical sites, museums,restaurants, Waterfront and shops. Apartment is very secure, well equipped and has its own style as described by others and evident in the images. I agree completely with all the previous reviews. Good secure parking within very short walking distance as is a pool and gym.We were greeted by Max's accomplice Katie who was very helpful. The only caution I would say about the apartment is the lack of banisters in certain areas which if you were to fall would result in very serious injury. The apartment is therefore not suitable for children, anyone unsteady on their feet or inebriated!

Beautiful and spacious apartment with a couple of quirks that are identified in the description. Max and Cregan were both very responsive and helpful. As stated in the description it is "not child-friendly, in fact it is not intoxicated-friendly either". This means the main bedroom does not have any bannister in front of the >3m drop down to the lower level. This turns ordinary activities in to death-defying feats. When walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night you need to remember that a false step could lead to plunging down several meters to land on the hardwood floors below. If you are driving and parking, note that the parking is in a separate building (as stated in the description). The apartment is at the bottom of Longmarket street in the busy section. So if you arrive at 5pm on a Friday you will need to carry your luggage 50m along the street navigating the crowds. Not a massive deal, but I try to arrive earlier if you can.

the space is truly stunning; an unfortunate distraction is that not everything is working as well as it should, partly from being a heritage building, partly because of poor maintenance . Max was very responsive himself, less so his team. great central location, close to everything, although you need to be aware that it is in the heart of the CBD, not for everyone.
