My place is close to restaurants and dining, nightlife, family-friendly activities. Walking distance to Reading Liederkranz and Stokesay Castle and close to Alvernia and Albright. It feels like country but is only 5 minutes to the city.

This is a liberal, gay household.

The space

My house was built in 1799 by german immigrants. It was an angora sheep farm. The barn, root cellar, carriage house, and chicken coop still remain. There are some ruins of an old blacksmith shop near the woods. It is furnished very eclectically and has an interesting art collection. There is a movie room with a 110" screen and surround sound. There is wi-fi throughout the house.

As this is a 200 year old stone farmhouse, partially heated with wood, if you have a problem with "dust" i suggest you look elsewhere.

There is no cable but there is an extensive movie collection and you may also hook up your own devices to play things in the movie room.

There is no air conditioning because the walls are 2 feet thick stone and it is unnecessary. There is radiator heat in winter.

I am a garden designer, so you are welcome to chill in the gardens. There are also some great trails on the mountain.

Guest access

Guests have access to most everything except my kitchen. There is a microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker in the master suite with the queen bed.

Interaction with guests

I tend to be live and let live, but am friendly and always willing to answer questions and help.

Other things to note

The prices for the last weekend in September from Thursday to Monday will be doubled. My house is a 10 minute walk to the Reading Leiderkranz Octoberfest.

It was lovely waking up in the master bedroom as the sun came up and the trees were covered in snow. Beautiful view and very hospitable!

One reviewer mentioned something about the decor being gothic and that this is not a place for “conservative” people. I should clarify that the decor is a little spooky: a cane displayed on the wall from what looks like snake vertebrae, a series of framed pictures of restaurant menu items eaten by serial killers, a large painting in the dining room of a one-eyed porcelain doll / ventriloquist dummy. If that’s cool with you, then go for it! I was not able to actually meet Brian as we never crossed paths but it seems from other reviewers that he is a pleasant and accommodating guy. He was also very good at communicating quickly with me through messages in the days leading up to my stay.

Brian's place is located in a super quiet hillside neighborhood. You'll probably want a car or ride into town. It's an old stone home, so it has that kind of humid slightly musty atmosphere inside that an old stone home might have. Brian wasn't around all week so I had the place to myself and enjoyed an extremely quiet stay.

Unique Place. Very comfortable. Internet fast (after I selected the correct wi-fi!) Classic old place just outside the city. I would stay again.

I stayed at Brian's place after attending a wedding in nearby Stokesay castle and the space was perfect for what we needed! Very close to the event, clean, comfortable, and private.

The house is on top of a hill but still only 5 minutes away from the center of town. The bed wasn't very comfortable but also not worse than most hotel beds. The room itself was the perfect size and close to the bathroom. The house and the gardens were absolutely beautiful and much nicer than I expected.
