The space

Stay, Play, Relax. We offer comfortable, spacious accommodation on a 2 acre non smoking property that we have developed since we moved in in 2002. It is not immaculate. The floors, like myself, have seen better days and have the odd mark that no amount of steam cleaning will remove. I am saving up for a makeover for the floors, bathroom and myself, though the latter may be a lost cause. It is a huge, clean, comfy, well equipped s/c flat on the ground floor, set in 2 acres of gardens.
Whilst not being able to comply fully with disability standards we have made this flat as wheelchair friendly as possible. We have installed grab rails in the bathroom for shower and toilet and ramps to assist over door ledges. The huge front bedroom has plenty of space for hoists and other equipment and the massive lounge is easy to manoevre around, and wheelchairs can fit under the dining table. There is lots of room to drive your vehicle up to the door and unload. People in wheelchairs can access the bottom terrace of the garden to participate in summer BBQ's and winter fires. The biggest challenge is the width of the doorways into the bathroom and lounge. At 700mm wide they are a tight squeeze but proved doable when tested by our kind friend in a wheelchair. Extra equipment for people with a disability can be hired from the wonderful Jenny at Mobility Matters in Bega, who will deliver to us ready for your visit and pick it up after you leave. We are in their system. Please contact me to discuss your needs before booking so we can ensure we can accommodate you comfortably. Massage Therapy available for people with mobility issues, Carol can amend the treatment to suit your needs.
Inspired by permaculture, we try to live as sustainably as possible and are happy to discuss the many features of this to those interested. Alternatively just relax in the shady gardens, watch the birds fly over at sundown and enjoy. Make use of the BBQ and outdoor dining facilities (Please use plastic glasses outside. Lots of kids walk about in bare feet) or sprawl out in the enormous open plan lounge/kitchen. Enjoy open fires and roast chestnuts around the outdoor firepit in the fire season. With very little light pollution we have amazing views of the stars.

Over the years we have set up various play activities for our own children and their friends and love seeing kids having fun on them. Your children are welcome to use them too but must be supervised at all times. We take an All Care No Responsibility approach to children using the play equipment. Your kids will love the swings, cubby houses, trampolines and slides but there are inherent risks in using these so you need to ensure your children are using them safely. The slide is a great favourite, especially on hot days with water from the hose, but be warned: It can go fast and the odd child ends up in the garden. Everyone has survived intact so far. Your children will get filthy and have lots of fun. Feel free to use the washing machine in the laundry at the back of the house.

Carol is a remedial massage therapist at Senior Level One with the Association of Massage Therapists Pty Ltd. She has taught massage therapy at private colleges and TAFE in Sydney, where she established the Health and Recreation Dept at Randwick TAFE. Whether you require gentle relaxation or deep tissue massage, Carol can accommodate your needs. The clinic is at the back of the property, which has separate access to the flat. Feel free to have a chat to discuss your needs and book a treatment. Treatments cost $80 and last over an hour.

Carol also runs workshops in Massage for Home Use which teaches simple but effective techniques to reduce stress without using any special equipment. Learn how to give a great sit up neck and shoulder massage (Done through clothes) and a blissful foot massage that will help relax your whole body. Full notes with photographs detailing the techniques supplied. Contact Carol for further details or if you would like to book to participate in the workshop.

Guest access

The downstairs flat with its huge lounge and 3 bedrooms is available for your use. The upstairs part of the house is our private family home. Feel free to stroll around the gardens and use the washing machine in the laundry at the back of the house upstairs. The washing line at the back is available too, but there is a portable clothes hangar downstairs if you prefer.
Let us know if there is anything you need. We are happy to provide things you may have forgotten or need.
A selection of books, games and DVD’s are provided for your enjoyment in the cupboard in the kitchen.
Beach towels are available for your use in the cupboard in the back bedroom. Please don’t take the blue towels out of the house.

Interaction with guests

We should be just upstairs most of the time so don't hesitate to knock on the door if you need something or just fancy a chat. We love socialising with guests but equally want to give you space and privacy. Give us a call. Note the list of emergency tel nos provided too.

Other things to note

It is Australia! Read on but don't be put off. We have lived, worked and played here happily since 2002. The only thing to die was the dog, and that was from old age!

There is a very strict policy in the warmer months of NO FIRES without a permit. Please observe these important rules and check with us if unsure. Thanks.

We rarely encounter snakes, but as with any rural area, they are around in summer so keep an eye out. If you do see one keep still and then back away very slowly. In the very unlikely event of anyone being bitten wrap a bandage firmly around the area and then up the limb as quickly as possible and call 000. Bandages are in the First Aid Kit in kitchen cupboard. Honestly we hardly ever see them!

Please don’t squash any insect against the walls. The render does not wash. We are more than happy to remove any spider or other insects for you. Check cubby houses before your child uses them. Red back spiders are the most common of the ones to worry about, but they are not aggressive. Seek immediate medical assistance if bitten by a redback.

Be aware that many ants in Australia are aggressive and give painful bites. Let me know if you see an ants nest and stay clear of it. Make sure children stay away. If bitten use Stingose in the first aid kit immediately (It's in the pine cupboard in the kitchen) and later when it starts itching Stop Itch. Watch carefully for signs of allergic reaction such as restricted breathing, swelling of tongue etc. Dial 000 immediately if this happens.

They are around in the warmer months as we live close to the creek. We provide the plug in repellants with tablets in the rooms. These are chemicals and some people may prefer not to use them. Your choice. You may need insect repellant on outside, especially in the evening.

At the beach.
For overseas guests. Make sure you know what to do if caught in a rip. There are some great websites. Basically though: If you find yourself being carried out to sea: Don't panic and don't try to swim against the current. If you can, swim to the side towards waves, as they will take you back to shore. Otherwise just stay afloat and the current will eventually take you back around and into the waves which will bring you back to shore. On patrolled beach the sign that you need assistance is to raise one hand high into the air.

Lakes Rivers and Pools.
Never dive in headfirst. There may be rocks or branches submerged. Always go in feet first.

Play equipment. The equipment was originally provided for our own children and their friends and we love seeing kids having fun. However in this situation there are insurance issues to deal with. You use the equipment at your own risk. There is inherent risk of injury in using the trampoline, swings, slide and cubby houses that you accept by allowing your children to use this equipment. By doing so you agree that if you or your child suffer harm whilst using this equipment you will not sue Carol Holden for any claims, costs, damages or liabilities you may have for injuries suffered by you. Only allow one person at a time on the trampolines. Please do not allow your children to climb trees and keep them off the garden beds. You also agree to supervise your children on the play equipment at all times and please report any damage so that I can make the equipment as safe as possible. There is a play park 5 mins walk away in the park in Candelo with a flying fox, climbing spider and slide that you may prefer to use if you do not accept these terms and conditions.

The slide works best with a little water from the dark green hose. Note that the light green hose contains greywater and should NOT be touched. Ensure you wash hands if you do come into contact with it. Please turn the hose off tight after use as water is very precious. Warning your children will get filthy and have lots of fun. Feel free to use the washing machine in the laundry at the back of the house.

No Smoking inside or out. Thanks.

Pets outside only please.

- Fire restrictions must be adhered to.

- We welcome groups and want you to have fun. Whilst the flat is s/c and private please consider our family and neighbours regarding noise levels in the evening.

Please leave the place as clean as you found it. Thankyou.

- If you need anything don't hesitate to ask.

What a stay! First I have to say that Carol is one of the best host I've had. She made sure our stay felt just like home. Carol made sure we had enough wood every night to make fire (and even made it for us a couple of nights). She also left food for breakfast for my family and I. Overall, what a host! We loved the house, it was very cozy. The town is very small but so many beautiful places/lookouts to see around the area. Highly recommend this stay! :) Thank you Carol.

We had to go away to somewhere during school holiday but left it very late to book a place. I hadn't honestly expected that much about the place. However, from the moment we opened the flat (this is the deception ^.^ since it's not the size of a flat but palace) we felt in love with the place. To begin with it was so spacious, the main room has a fire place which we loved and used every night, gas heater instantly warmed up the kitchen/lounge and the garden... Our teenage kids loved to explore the garden. My husband and I loved sitting on the bench reading a book in the garden. The garden was surely the wonder. We were lucky enough to have fresh lemons and mandarins from the trees. There was nothing else we wished for while we were staying at Carol's place. Even the towels were so fluffy and pleasant. Carol is such a kind, friendly and considerate host that we could see her loving touch from inside out and told us the history of Candelo. Candelo is a very cute town and worth to visit. However, still the big part of the joy and fun was from the host and the place we stayed. I can recommend anybody and everybody to stay at Carol's place with much confidence. My family was very proud of me for choosing the place! We're very looking forward to going back to Carol's place in the near future. Thank you so much Carol for everything you did for us and helped us to enjoy our stay!!! With much love, Cecilia

Carol was very caring, she asked whether I should change to different accommodation so that I didn't have to to get to her place in the dark, but I determine to go and that was the best decision I had made in the whole trip. The house is very clean and cortabld for 10 of us. We really enjoyed our time there.

I am an Air B n B host living on a 2 acre property in the historic village of Candelo, NSW, Australia with my two sons aged 11 and 14. I moved here in 2002 attracted by the great music scene ( See Candelo Arts Society for details of what's on) and the beautiful national parks, both inland and coastal of the Far South Coast of NSW
Whilst not totally organic we strive to live as sustainably as possible and our place has many features that reflect this. Influenced by permaculture, we have planted out our property with fruit trees, natives and some exotics.
I am a remedial massage therapist and run a clinic from home as well as workshops teaching simple and effective massage techniques to use at home. I am also a teacher and specialise in teaching literacy, English as a second language and mainstream English.
We want people to have a great time here. Experience country hospitality close to the coast. Breakfast packs are available. The huge private s/c flat available is on ground floor level: the only steps are in the garden. Kids will love the water slide, trampolines and other play equipment and there are plenty of quiet shady spots to escape to. Relax in the massive open plan lounge/ kitchen or enjoy a BBQ in the garden or an outdoor fire in winter under the stars. Check out our guide book for local knowledge on places to go and things to try in the area. Stay. Play. Relax.
