About this listing

Pound House lies in the heart of the Dorset countryside, surrounded by nature and wildlife. It is a twenty minute drive to the sea.

Pound House is a spacious traditional Dorset thatched house, and has been in our family for many years. It is homely, comfortable and clean, and has recently been redecorated, but is still a little frayed at the edges.

It is good for couples, families (with kids), ramblers, cyclists, climbers (Portland is a 30 minute drive), and furry friends (pets).

The space

Downstairs comprises of two lounges, one smaller cosy space, great for relaxing in the evenings with a glass of wine and one large light filled room perfect for sunny summer days. There is a large kitchen/dining room with views into the garden and surrounding fields. This is perfect for entertaining large groups of people. There is also an Aga if you wish to try your hand this type of cooking. Next to the kitchen is a smaller adjoining room with a reasonably sized electric cooker for those who prefer to cook on this. There is also a small downstairs toilet off the smaller living room.

Upstairs there are four bedrooms. One master bedroom with a double bed and ensuite bathroom, one small single bedroom, one twin room, and another double room which contains another extra single bed. All the bedrooms upstairs rooms have sinks (which we don't use very much). There is also a separate bathroom. Neither of bathrooms have a shower at the moment but we are hoping to have one installed (currently booked for September 2017).

The house has a lovely feel to it and all our friends have always said how much they enjoy staying there. It is a little frayed at the edges so please don't expect perfection, but it professionally cleaned and has brand new pocket sprung mattress with mattress protectors and brand new bed linen. Feel free to read our books, but please do not take them away!

The garden is large and has a small stream running along one side of it, so be careful with young children. Having said that all our kids have grown up there and we have never had any incidents. You drive over a small bridge into the property and there is parking for 3 cars.

Guest access

Next to the house is a garage with a table tennis table. Feel free to go in and use this. There is a light in there so you can also play at night.

Interaction with guests

We will not be around during your stay but please feel free to contact us if you have any issues.

1. Please be aware that there is a stream running alongside the garden. While it is very relaxing, if you have small children in your group, you must always keep an eye on them. Our children have grown up here safely, but you do need to be careful always.

2. At the end of your stay all rubbish must be removed from the house and garden and put at the end of the lane (on the A352, not the bridge) under the 'Godney Herd' sign. There are wheelie bins for rubbish and recycling. There are also blue refuse bags if you run out of space in the bin.

3. Please remove any dog mess from the lawns before you leave.

The Pound House is idyllic and made for a truly memorable family holiday. The house is basic and rough around the edges but in way that adds to the character and makes it magical for the children. The location is perfect for most of Dorset's major attractions and there are plenty of lovely places to eat locally (the Giant inn in cerne Abbas, the Duchess of Cornwall in Poundbury and the wise man in west stafford) We would recommend Summer Lodge in Ever shot for some r and r at the spa too! The house is well equipped for making large meals (there were 8 of us) and there is a wealth of books and board games to keep everyone busy!

The house is in a very secluded spot and backs onto a working dairy farm, but is in reach of Dorchester for shopping. It is spacious and homely and the garden is a good size with a river by the side with a steep drop down to it. It is useful to be able to bring dogs and ours enjoyed the space.

Pleasant cottage with charm and character, in a nice secluded location off the beaten track. Nearby dairy farm provides that country ambiance. Quite jaded throughout, and in need of investment, sofas have little support and more lighting is needed in the main lounge. Kitchen in particular needs a thorough, deep clean. Trumpet Major pub 10 mins away does decent food, good for families.

Response from Simon:
Airbnb works on trust. As we live in London we cannot visit after every guest. Consequently, we were concerned by some of Phillip's comments. He emailed us to complain of the standard of cleaning when he arrived. He did not ask for the house to be cleaned again, but emailed that, for example, in relation to the kitchen, "The four of us had to spend almost 2 hours simply to reach an acceptable standard." This implies that the kitchen needed 8 hours of work, which we found hard to believe. Normally, if anything goes wrong, our guests contact us and we put it right immediately. For example, a smoke alarm went off and we got the electrician to come out at once. We offered to refund the cleaning fee, believing that the cleaners had not actually been. However, when we contacted them, we discovered that they had indeed been, carried out their regular clean and had not reported anything unusual. As a gesture of good will we offered anyway to refund half of the cleaning fee. Philip refused this. He then issued a claim for £110 for cleaning through Airbnb when he had only been charged £60. On this basis I regret that we cannot in all conscience recommend Philip.

An attractive thatched cottage in a beautiful part of Dorset. Our only real problem was communication and that there was no one near at hand to show us what was what and sort out the little wrinkles.

Response from Simon:
Sorry you felt that communication was lacking but it does state very clearly on Airbnb that we are not around and that you have to email us for the house instructions. Also, if you try to contact us we are always on hand to answer any questions that you may have.

Like stepping back in time about 40 years which is all part of the character of the place. Probably not for you if farm sounds and smells aren't your thing but we found it not to be a problem at all. A good base for exploring that part of the country or simply for kicking back and relaxing.

The house is spacious and comfortable with everything you would need to keep children, granny and dog happy! We loved spreading out on the lawn, enjoying the deep peace of the countryside and listening to the stream meandering by. Wonderful walks nearby too. A fabulous long weekend!

Such a characterful property, and a wonderfully quiet setting. Occasional noises from the farm just seemed to add to the ambience. We enjoyed perusing the many books when we weren't busy exploring the area. We loved the house and the garden and will keep it in mind for another trip.
