The space

Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains of Northern Mexico, Alamos is a gem of an archetypal colonial city. Founded as a silver mining center in the 17th century with a typical town square and church, restoration of colonial mansions has been underway for the past fifty years.

Our house is more than 300 years old with thick adobe walls and traditional tiled floors but has been upgraded with a modern kitchen, plumbing, and electrical appliances. Located just 3 short blocks from the town square and market, there are gourmet restaurants and shops within easy walking distance, as well as a colorful Sunday market.

Walking through the front door, you will experience an oasis of calm as you move to the covered portal (porch) and walled courtyard with fountain, bouganvillas, palm, avocado, and tangerine trees. There are two separate wings- one with formal dining, kitchen, bedroom and bath. The other contains the living room, master bedroom with bath, and a third bedroom/den. Four fireplaces as well as ceiling fans in every room keep us warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Air conditioning in the kitchen, living room, and master bedroom only. The housekeeper comes three times weekly to keep things tidy.

An interesting selection of books, videos, and games are onsite and for those interested in an active vacation, opportunities abound in the scenic areas outside of town. Horseback riding, hiking, biking, birding, and rafting are some of the sports available.

The famed Copper Canyon and historic train ride are within 2-3 hours by car. A nine hour drive from Tucson and three hours from the seaside town of San Carlos, Alamos is a charming must-see on any tour of Sonora.
