Ho'ohauoli is a spacious and homey vacation rental in the quiet residential community of Hawaiian Beaches, just outside village of Pahoa with an amenity that is extremely rare this area: AIR CONDITIONING! That’s right – the living room has an A/C window unit, and the master bedroom has a cooler as well. Combined with the many ceiling fans and cool tile flooring, you’ll stay chill when you stay here!

The space

Ho'ohauoli is on a quiet street in a residential neighborhood, surrounded on all sides by dense green jungle foliage. It sits on a lush lot landscaped with a lovely array of tropical plants and flowers. Pull up into the carport and you’ll enter into the spacious, bright living room where you can relax on the sofa and watch TV. Cable reception and a DVD player are provided, as is high speed internet, including wifi, for your devices.

Just past the living room is the dining area with seating for 4. Adjacent to the dining area is the kitchen, outfitted with all you’ll need to prepare, cook and serve meals. You’ll find an electric range, full size fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, blender, mixer and rice maker, as well as cooking and serving ware.

When you want to enjoy cooking or eating outdoors, step out onto the large covered lanai, where you’ll find a sweet new gas BBQ and a large dining table. Steps from the lanai lead down into a large grassy fenced yard. There’s a large avocado tree here for you to enjoy, in season!

Back inside, head down the hallway to find bathroom #1 with a shower over tub. If you must work, there’s a large desk in the den across the hall, or fold out the plush futon and use this room as a third bedroom.

The two main bedrooms are at the end of the hall. To the right is the master bedroom, with a queen bed, cooler and Ensuite bathroom, also offering a shower over tub. There’s a large closet and a sliding glass door that opens to the lanai. Across the hall, bedroom #2 has a full size bed and closet of its own. Both bedrooms have ceiling fans and nightstands with reading lamps.

Ho'ohauoli is centrally located in the Puna district, less than 10 minutes from Pahoa Village where you’ll find great restaurants, boutiques, groceries, etc. Walk six blocks to the Kahakai cliff side park where you can enjoy a picnic on the lawn or sit along the cliff to watch the waves crash against the shore. Head south of Pahoa out to the coast and follow the Red Road, and you’ll find some of the state’s best snorkeling at the Wai Opae tidepools, the boat launch and surfing hot spot at Pohoiki Bay, Kehena Black Sand Beach, and the current lava viewing area at Kalapana. Head north from Pahoa to visit historic Hilo and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, each about 45 minutes from the house.

If you are looking for an easy, affordable and air conditioned vacation rental that exceptionally private and peaceful, Ho'ohauoli is a perfect choice!

Loved our stay super close to beautiful sunrises and easy drive to Hilo for great food.

We selected this property for the air conditioning and to be closer to Volcanoes National Park. And while Pahoa is a charming little town, if we stayed again we would choose a different property. If you, like us, are looking for AC in the Big Island, I recommend a hotel. The AC in this property was 1 window unit in the living room, and a mobile unit in 1 bedroom. But....the mobile unit serves also as a dehumidifier and fills up with water every 2-3 hours which requires you to wake up in the night multiple times to empty. The property is spacious with a large living area, 2 full bathrooms, 2 full bedrooms and a 3rd room with a fold out futon. It was just 2 of us, but having 2 bathrooms was great. We only did some minor food prep in the kitchen, but it had what we needed. You can see the impact of this home being near the ocean and in a humid environment. Sort of damp smell, moldy shower caulk, rusty refrigerator, etc. Nothing was "dirty", and it seems well maintained given the circumstances. I wish we had been able to take more advantage of the outdoor lanai and yard, but just weren't in the house that much. Be warned that there are chickens (including roosters!) next door. They weren't disruptive and added to the charm. Do take a look at the tips for things to do in the immediate area in the house notebook. Very helpful and some of the best things we did while on the Hilo side.

Set your expectations, and you will not be disappointed. I was traveling with a group of 4, 2 couples. The location is in Pahoa, which is a little bit of a drive, considering that I have a 25 minute limit in the car before I start getting fussy. For us, we were trying to get away and "unplug" just a little, so this met our needs perfectly. If you're trying to be in the hustle and bustle of it, all this place will not be for you. We were able to "unplug" in just the right amount. There was a TV to watch the news before bed and in the morning before we started our day and wi-fi so we could re-connect and catch up on what we might have missed during the day. I loved that there was a grill for us to use, as pictured. It worked fine. Yes, the frogs "chirp" at night. I didn't find it to be disruptive to me falling asleep. Yes, the roosters wake you up a little bit early. I prefer that to the normal trash collection trucks that I usually wake up to on Oahu. Honestly, if I lived in Hilo, and I was just going to do a stay-cation, I would like to stay here again.

This rental is rather simple, nothing fancy, which is totally ok. Unfortunately it was very dirty. Except for clean sheets and toilett and shower, the rest of the house was so filthy that my husband and I spent couple of hours cleaning the place to be able to enjoy our holiday. We washed the porch full of birds poo, tables, chairs, shelves, washed the chairs covers in washing machine ... practically tried to clean everything we would touch ... we contacted the rental agency on this matter and around 2-3pm they sent a housekeeping service that cleaned the mouldy grill, 1 sofa and disposed of dry dead frog that I found in the chair when changing and washing the chairs covers. I asked the rental agency for the return of the 140 usd cleaning fee. At this moment the communication between us and the rental agency stopped but I was returned half of the fee. I would expect an apology and at least return of the whole fee. I would not come back because of the dirt. The house itself is not a problem. It is rather average, but ok. Spacy, with big enough kitchen, big porch and BBQ grill. What it lacks, is care. We were not fond of this particular area of Pahoa - lots of mosquitos, crowing roosters (from 1am till 10am) and 1 strange neighbour house however the location was not an issue. It is quite close to the volcanic park and tide pools.

Centrally located to attractions on the east side of the BI, but the house is well into residential neighborhoods and a 30 minute drive to Hilo. Nothing within walking distance. This is a simple but spacious 3-br house with carport and lanai and small backyard. Comfortable for this family of 3 adults and 2 teenagers.
