La Maison Bois was designed and completed in 2015 by young British Architect Tom Kyle, in the quest to self build a sustainable, low impact, holiday home, in the popular and beautiful region of Charente.

Constructed in timber and clad with locally sourced wood and stone, the views from its terraces of the hills of Charente Limousine are stunning. The spacious enclosed garden offers lots of places to play and relax.

The space
Inside the high ceilinged, open plan living area is full of light thanks to large patio doors and is well equipped with extremely comfortable modern furniture. Also on the ground floor are two double bedrooms with shower rooms. On the first floor are two further bedrooms, one with a king size bed with bath and shower room and the other with twin beds and bathroom and access to a balcony overlooking the living room. Sheets, and towels are provided. The house received the Poitou-Charentes regional award 2015-2016 for wood construction.

From it's spot on the edge of the village of Montemboeuf you can be in historic Angouleme in half an hour, visit the sporty lakes of the Haute Charente, take a day trip to the seaside at Royan, or visit the cities of Bergerac or Cognac.

Both Jess and I have a love of France and have visited most departments on our holidays. As an Architect, I have always wanted to build my own house and trying to do this in the UK is very difficult. At the end of 2012, we decided to combine these two passions and embarked on a self-build project in the Charente. The result is La Maison Bois! The process started when we visited a French property in show in London. Initially we went to look for a wreck that we could do up, but then noticed that there was a lot of land available in France that came with outline planning. This seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. We started to look plots online and then took the decision to spend a week viewing. As I specialise in residential design this was a fantastic opportunity, although Jess did have quite a bit of input in the final design! I have always had an interest in sustainable architecture and we are both keen on sustainable living which definitely led the design process. If you are interested in reading how we got here, please visit our build blog which charts the build from the very start. (les petites garennes)
