This ancient Somerset cottage with contemporary decor is a hideaway down a quiet back street in Bruton, yet only a 5 minute walk to At The Chapel and the High Street with a mix independent shops, pubs, a great deli and a bakery. A high spec interior with antique furniture, wood burning stove, ancient flagstones downstairs and wooden floors upstairs, High Speed Wifi and well stocked kitchen. A spacious, comfortable, peaceful cottage in Somerset, ideal for couples & families.

The space
The cottage entrance hall opens into downstairs double bedroom with a king size bed, flagstone floors, sheepskins, an arm chair, a dresser and blackout curtains. This leads through to a second single bedroom containing a trundle bed (a single bed that has another pull out bed underneath) that can either be used as a single/twin bedroom, or as a dressing room if not used for sleeping - it also contains a clothes hanger and a chest of drawers). Due to needing to walk through the double bedroom to reach this room, it is really only suitable for children.

Also downstairs is a monochrome bathroom with a clawfoot tub with overhead shower and freshly laundered white fluffy towels.

Stairs up to first floor open out into a large sitting room with whitewashed floors, anglepoise lamps, sheepskins and a wood burning fire. This also opens out to a conservatory with double doors leading out to a sunny balcony, the perfect spot for a gin & tonic.

Through the sitting room is a double height aspect diner and well-equipped kitchen with Le Creuset casserole dishes and a curated selection of cookbooks. The kitchen is stocked with basics – tea & coffee etc. There is always ice in the freezer and also an honesty bar for wine.

There is an internet TV, an internet radio and high speed Wifi.

Another set of stairs leads up to a mezzanine level above the kitchen/diner with twin beds and views across the rooftops to the Dovecote above the town. The mezzanine level not have a door (it does have a curtain for privacy and to ensure it is dark for sleeping) and just contains 2 single beds so again, is more suited as an extra sleeping space for children. The cottage can sleep 6 if all the beds are used, but we think it is better suited to 4/5 (i.e. 2 adults & 2/3 kids) and due to the nature of the layout is best suited to families or couples.

Please note: There is a pub garden 2 gardens away, which you can sometimes hear in summer evenings if the windows are open. Day times are quiet; but in the evenings you can sometimes hear chatter, particularly on a Friday or Saturday evening. Please do ask me any questions about this.

Guest access
There is a key safe outside with the front door key. Your check in details will contain the code to pick up the key.
There is no dedicated parking space, but you can usually park on the lane outside.

Other things to note
This is a non-smoking property.

Well behaved dogs are allowed.

Although it can sleep 6 - the cottage is not appropriate for groups of adults, it is suitable for couples or families.

For one night stays please note that we apply a 30% increase on our standard nightly rate (cleaning fee is charged additionally), which we are unable to add to the booking settings.

Neighbourhood highlights

Bruton is fantastic place to visit for a short break or holiday and Ropewalk Cottage is walking distance to everything in town, yet there are lovely country walks from the doorstep . World renowned art Gallery Hauser & Wirth is on the edge of town with the Roth Bar & Grill, popular restaurant At The Chapel is a few minutes walk away. The Gardens at The Newt are a 5 minute drive away and the Stourhead Estate, just 10 minutes away. It's a friendly community with a thriving high street, 1 pub, a deli, a cafe, independent shops and always lots going on - you can buy most things you need in town. Close to Glastonbury, Frome and the Somerset Levels, and on the train line to Bath, it's a great base for exploring beautiful Somerset and visiting all the events and festivals. The cottage comes with a guide with lots of information about things to do, places to go and walk routes.
The cottage is in the middle of town, and is right on a little lane tucked behind the high street; there is some noise from a nearby pub garden (full details are in the main description), and you will hear people walking past - if you want a stay in a quiet country cottage - this may not be the rental for you... but if you would like a cottage with convenient access to lots of amenities, then it would suit you better. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

Lives in Bruton, United Kingdom
Hi, I'm Joanna. I live in Bruton, Somerset with my husband Crispin and our 2 children Sascha (13) and Magnus (11). We rent out the cottage at the bottom of our garden to people wanting to come and stay in the Somerset countryside. I like food, wine and good design and hope that our airbnb reflects that. I'm always on hand to help out and advise our guests on how to get the most out of their stay, whether on the phone or in person.
