This wonderful ancient house is situated in a strategic spot along the old city walls of the Medina. It is perfect for families with kids, couples or people travelling alone – a magical place where past and present merge and you can relax and enjoy being away from the daily grind.
The house is within the walls of the ancient medina. The suburbs are constantly growing but this does not influence the timelessness of the narrow and busy streets of the old town.
Clara Toby is on Rue du Rif, a narrow road running along crenellated internal walls, and was the home of a Jewish wine merchant. The first and second floors have ceilings four meters high and are built around a central courtyard with a fountain. From the terrace, one of the highest in town, there are 360-degree views of the beach and the port.
The house, acquired by our family in the mid 1990s, is unique as it is left intact. From the arcaded ground floor (perfect for parties), originally used to store wine, to the Portuguese colonial living area on the two middle floors, to the simple but spacious rooftop rooms and the terrace with its panoramic views of the ocean, it embodies Essaouira’s history.
The house is planned on 4 floors, the are different options on how to rent it, depending of course, on the amount of people and on the requests of the guests.
This option offers 1 room on the first floor, with a kitchen, an enormous living room with a glass roof, a bedroom and of course a bathroom. you can access at the roof terracce to enjoy the marvelous view of the nevrending ocean.
Every room can be locked with a lock, so that you can keep your private belongings safe.
Interaction with guests
I am available to answer you your questions or problems, but I will not be on site, as I am based in Germany. Najia, our manager in Essaouira, will be ready to welcome you on arrival.
Najia has many years’ professional cooking experience and will be very happy to cook for you in the house during your stay. All products are sourced locally and she makes the bread herself. You are welcome to observe her while she is preparing meals and ask questions, learning about Moroccan and Saouiri cuisine.
She can also, if you want, arrange a taxi from Marrackech or Casablanca.
An other great thing as an option is that she could accompany you through the markets of the town, or bring you to some traditional Hammams.
