Built in 2016 on Marjorie Farm's 230-year-old property, the Crow's Nest offers a private, well-appointed retreat in a rustic setting. Enjoy loft ceilings and abundant light in this meticulously renovated 2nd floor of our barn.
It's a perfect "home base" for solo adventurers, couples, and families who want to take advantage of all Midcoast Maine has to offer while relaxing slightly off the beaten path. Close to beaches, shopping, restaurants, hiking, museums, and farmers' markets.
The space
The property’s main farm house was built in 1790—when George Washington was president! Later, the owners expanded the kitchen and added a new section of the house plus the deck. The barn and driveway were then added. In 2015, Nina and Ian bought the property and named it Marjorie Farm (after Nina’s grandmother). Nina’s parents, Beth and John, then built the Crow’s Nest above the barn in 2016. They wanted a place to stay when visiting their two adorable grandchildren.
This 500 sq. ft. living space is a perfect size and has everything efficiently laid out! The western-facing windows give excellent light and gorgeous views of the woods. You'll be a short distance from canoeing streams, hiking trails, beaches, restaurants & shopping, historic and tourist sites in Bath, Brunswick, Wiscasset, Phippsburg, Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor, and more.
Guest access
Please stick to the driveway and walkway to the Crow's Nest - we love having guests at The Crow's Nest but also value privacy around the rest of our farm. Thanks!
Other things to note
*** GUEST ACCESS ***
We ask guests to please stick to the driveway/walkway area, as we value privacy around the rest of the farm.
*** THIS IS A SAFE SPACE ***
For you and your family, regardless of race, religion, orientation, gender, or identification...if you come with love, we would love to host you.
*** RURAL EXPECTATIONS AND NEIGHBORHOOD SOUNDS ***
Although our farm is located in beautiful (and often calm) midcoast Maine, some folks have been surprised to learn that the country is not entirely silent! We live on what passes for a "main" road (albeit 2-lane), so you WILL hear some car noise and the occasional loud vehicle. "Rush hour" sounds can be more noticeable around 5-6am when the shipbuilders are making their way into Bath Iron Works, and when union workers go home in the 3-4pm range.
We have multiple roosters on the property. You likely won't notice them much before 7am when they're still in their coop, but after that you will hear them on and off throughout the day. Our neighbors have dogs and ducks. We also live in an area with a lot of hunting activity, so especially during the months of August-December you're likely to hear occasional shots in the woods. You may see a mouse. You may hear squirrels in the eaves. None of these sounds are constant, and we do provide a white noise maker to help with night sleep, but we find it best to set expectations so our guests understand what a "real" rural retreat is like.
This is also a working farm. While the entrance to the Crow's Nest through the barn workshop is private, lockable, and we never enter the space without guest permission, you may hear us pulling our vehicles in and out of the barn or preparing livestock feed. We get occasional deliveries of firewood, propane, soil, lumber, and hay. During the growing season (April-October), you'll likely notice us working in the garden behind the barn. And we have children that play outside. As much as we want our guests to have a relaxing and peaceful stay, we also need our guests to understand that work (and family life) does go on here...and that the countryside is a shared space between the human community and its animal residents.
*** THIS IS A SUSTAINABLE PLACE ***
We recycle and compost. We use recycled, non-bleached paper products, reusable cleaning cloths, and as many "green" cleaning products as possible. We follow sustainable permaculture practices for our crops and animals, provide wildlife and pollinator habitats, and cultivate deep relationships with the land.
***IMPORTANT BED INFO ***
While the bed in the bedroom is a queen (with a luxurious Tempur-Pedic mattress!), the living room "sleeper sofa" is more like a twin-sized futon. So, it's great for 1 adult or 2 small children, but would be pretty challenging to fit 2 adults unless they are petite and quite...cuddly. ;)
