About this listing

The location is as good as it gets in Shanghai and this combined with a charming apartment, at a very low price and local-feel makes this one a great find. I've lived in five apartments in this city and this one tops them all. I run a startup and love showing new friends around SH. The bedroom has lots of storage and closet space and it's all yours...

The space

This is a comfortable, bright and warm "European style" apartment. It is perfect if you are looking to stay in a place with a private bedroom, big open living area and local feel. It's an apartment that's not just one of the many IKEA style apartments, it may not be "fancy" but it has character.

It's in an old style compound with friendly local neighbors and walking distance to the best food markets, restaurants and bars in the city. It's ten minutes from Changshu road metro station (line 1&7) and fifteen minutes to Shanghai Library (line 10).

Your bedroom has privacy, good lighting and plenty of hanging and storage space.

The apartment has wooden floors, big south-facing window, high ceilings and AC/heat in every room. The bathroom is next to the kitchen and has a full standing shower. Please note that it is a fourth-floor walk-up, no elevator and it's an old apartment so can be drafty. I'll gladly help you with your luggage if I'm home.

Guest access

Big dining area and fully stocked kitchen: contains a refrigerator, sink, two burner stove, toaster, tea kettle, and space for food and cutting/prep. Tea, coffee and all cooking essentials are provided.

All in all, it's a very comfortable place and I hope that you will come and check it out!

Interaction with guests

I am currently running a startup in the clean energy space so I work a lot but happy to show you around on the weekends and introduce you to my friends and community of impact entrepreneurs and environmental activists that I hang out with. Basically I'm happy to be your city and social tour guide if you'd like or if you want to keep to yourself that is fine too. Once or twice a month we host breakfast at my apartment with friends and you're welcome to join!

Other things to note

Very nice cleaning lady comes every week and she will even wash your clothes and sheets for you! Filtered water is included. Lastly, if you are not prepared for an old style Chinese building this may not be a fit for you, it's definitely a unique experience if you've never lived in Asia or other developing countries. I love it but it is certainly an acquired taste!

Don't hesitate in booking this Airbnb! Thanks to Alex and his friends, this charming apartment and the city of Shanghai felt like my second home incredibly quickly. The location was perfect, the apartment is charming and very comfortable, but most of all the company is great and Alex helped me out without a second thought with so many small things that all made my stay in Shanghai so much more enjoyable and easy.

I feel like I got LUCKY! Alex and his place provided me the BEST experience to enjoy my time in Shanghai. Firstly, Alex was extremely generous in making sure that I had everything I needed to make my time in China smooth, fun and connected with great community. One of the first things he did was make sure that I remembered to register myself at the local police station. This is something I could of EASILY over looked. He actually took time out of his busy schedule to take me there himself and translate a few things. WOW. He also made sure I knew where to buy the best produce, how to get around easily, and what cool events were happening that would align with my interest. He was extremely helpful. THEN, his girlfriend Jingyee introduced me to a great acro-community. I feel like I got more then just a room, I got an entire tribe of friends that I will have for the rest of my life. Also, Alex's apartment is in PRIME location of Shanghai in the French Concession. There is a natural food store with the best wifi connection at the end of his block and around the corner is Z&B fitness in case you want to get your TRX class on. In only 7 mins, I was able to walk to my Chinese Language classes at Hutong School and the metro lines 1 & 7 are at Changshu Lu -- just up the street from his place. There are so many delicious international cafes, bars and restaurants in his neighborhood including authentic Chinese cuisine. Its an awesome mix of culture. In fact, if I were to live in Shanghai, this would be my hood. The apartment itself is modest and comfortable. I didn't need fancy, only clean and quiet. My room had lots of light and faces the street. At times you'll hear occasional street noise but not at night. You should also know that this area is extremely safe. I've traveled to many different countries and cities in my life time and this area is by far the safest place I've ever felt. I'd walk home late at night w/ my headphones on and not worry about anything. I have so much more to say about how great my time was at Alex's place was, but I'll spare you the long text. Just know that you'll end up in beautiful neighborhood with beautiful people who are out there making the world a better place.

This place is very nice and cozy. Surrounded by good bars, cafes and convenient stores. It was also super cool to walk around in the old "Shanghai style" street near this apartment. Alex and his girlfriend are nice hosts. They are friendly and informative. (Alex cooks very good pasta by the way.)

everything about this place is so great. the location is right in the heart of residential Shanghai, with lots of bars, markets and restaurants in the immediate vicinity, but it also feels really quiet and neighborhood like at the same time. public transportation is really convenient. the room is nice and having a maid do your laundry and clean is a sweet perk. Alex and Jingyee are wonderful hosts, great at communicating, both doing interesting things both in work and socially. I hope we can remain friends.

The listing description was accurate and alex sent me a detailed message on his home before i came, locality and things to do. He is a very friendly host and a great guy - who introduced me to his friends and the city and we grabbed a number of beers on the way. His home is also located in a great location in shanghai

Alex's apartment is well located on one of the best streets in Shanghai. That being said, the furnishing is pretty sparse, and we had some substantial problems with the temperature of the space (extremely cold). We also had some electricity issues--there was no electricity or light in the bathroom, and for the last day of our stay all the power went out in the apartment. Since Alex was away we had to make alternative arrangements for the last portion of our stay. Again, it's a great location, and the apartment could be a real gem, but there are some issues that should be sorted out for future guests.

Alex was the perfect host. Relaxed and welcoming. We felt at home in his apartment where we stayed four weeks. It is well placed in the French Concession, with lots of good cafes and eating places to explore nearby. There was a lot of refurbishment going on locally which made the environment quite dusty and noisy at times.

Response from Alex:
Liz, it was really nice to host you and your husband and thank you for the feedback! I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. As you know, the downside of China's development is all of the construction :) but luckily the renovations in our building are complete so things should be better for now. I'd be happy to host again the next time you are in Shanghai.
