Merman Cottage is a converted traditional stone "Steading" on a croft, we are close to The Edinbane Inn, 8 miles from Dunvegan, 13 from Portree and an hour from the Skye bridge.

The space

The cottage is a traditional 1 and a half story stone building, upstairs there is a double bedroom, a twin room and toilet accessed by a wooden spiral staircase. The ground floor is an open plan living, dining, kitchen area with a bathroom. There is a sea loch at the bottom of the croft. The cottage is cosy, safe and peaceful. It is a place to relax after a day on the hills or exploring Skye, the thick walls and crackling fire in the potbellied stove provide a haven to recharge your batteries in a busy world.

Beautiful cottage in an equally beautiful location. Helen was a great host, very helpful and approachable, allowed us to extend our stay at very short notice. The cottage has everything we needed and we will definitely be returning!

Lovely little cottage and very comfortable. We only stayed for one night, but would have liked to stay longer. The fire place was great to sit around in the evening to warm up after a day full of walks and the kitchen is really well equipped too. Only little thing was that the bathroom and toilet had no locks on the doors, but we just left it ajar when no one was in there.

A very friendly host and warm welcome. The cottage was lovely and cosy and it was great to see the newborn cow being fed in the morning! Don't make the same mistake as I did with the hot water (this despite a note from the host, so it was my own fault!) I mistook the shower for an electric one and the hot water tank for water from the taps (i.e. for washing up etc). A bad mistake when traveling with three women!! :D Don't do the same and turn on the hot water for the shower (as instructed!!)

We had a lovely time in Alistair and Helen's cottage, which is a great location to travel all over Skye from. It's warm, cosy and near to a great pub!

The cottage in Edinbane is as lovely and tiny as it seems on the pictures. We really enjoyed our time in the cottage, it has everything you need for perfect holidays.

The Merman cottage is a great little base for a vacation on the Isle of Skye. It was a perfect size for our family of four. The kitchen was pretty well equipped for cooking meals and the small wood stove was nice in the evening after a day of exploring Skye. There were plenty of nice little touches too. It was wonderful to be greeted by a pot of tea and some delicious baking when we arrived the first evening, and the photo album about the restoration of the cottage and all the information pamphlets about the island were very interesting to read through. We wish we had more time to spend there! Just remember to pay attention to the instructions about the water heater before taking a shower.

My wife Helen is a Shiatsu / Reiki practitioner and is also "Head of Having Fun" in a local old people's home. We have 3 daughters, 4 cows, 2 ponies, a cat and a dog. Before living on Skye I lived and worked in a number of countries in Africa.
