Ted’s Hut

Nestling at the highest point of our front hayfield, and offering breathtaking views across the rural Mendips to Glastonbury Tor (and way beyond), you will find Ted’s Hut secluded away.

In the Somerset dialect, ‘Ted ’ means to turn hay so that it dries evenly into the perfect feed for the farm animals, ensuring that all the livestock are looked after in the best way possible. Ted’s Hut continues this approach today, ensuring that all visitors have everything they need to be rested.

The space
We aim to provide you with almost everything you should need for a stay here in Ted’s Hut.

We will provide you with fine Egyptian cotton bed linen for your stay; we have even provided you with a simple dry larder supply that includes West Country Teabags, high-quality ground coffee, sugar and sometimes even a pint of milk ready in the fridge for your arrival.

If you feel like lighting Ted’s wood-burning stove (or fire pit), you need not worry about wood, kindling or fire starters. They are included too! So there’s no need to purchase these from a roadside garage late at night.

Stepping into the bathroom for the first time you will also find large fluffy towels, shower gel, and fresh toilet tissue. Everything one needs to make the stay perfectly perfect is provided as standard.

Electric Vehicles Staying At Teds Hut.

If you own a ‘Granny’ cable, you’ll be able to charge your vehicle on-site as a standard 3-pin electric socket is located next to the car parking space for Ted. All we ask is that you make a donation (suggested amount £5) to an environmental charity such as Friends of the Earth when you return home.

Other things to note
Eco power all year round
Ted’s electrics are powered by the solar panels installed on the roof! This provides plenty of power for the indoor and outdoor lighting as well as the USB power points, even during the winter. So you can rest assured that your smartphone, tablet or ebook reader can be charged (using the wall-mounted USB sockets). This does, however, mean that there are no 3 pin plug sockets within the hut for devices that require more power, offering you a real retreat from the modern world. Because Ted is powered by hybrid solar, he stays warm and cosy all year round with an energy-efficient electric radiator and heated towel rail.

Location, location, location

First of all, it’s a pretty special spot. Here you find, the unique, Teds Hut, surrounded by gorgeous green hay field just below one of the highest points on the Mendip Hills, facing south with stunning views across the unique landscape of the Somerset Levels, Glastonbury Tor and the distant Quantock Hills. Glorious isolation, but near your car if required, and 100 metres from the former farm house and farm buildings. Local attractions include Wells (England’s smallest cathedral city), Glastonbury (England’s hippiest town), Wookey Hole Caves and Cheddar Gorge, plus some great walking and cycling country with a wealth of quirky pubs and eateries (visit our activities and outings page for more details).

Unique Eco Hot Tub

Exclusively handmade, the tub is perfect to share a wood-fired outdoor bathing experience, for a soak or to just unwind, whatever the weather. The stove gets the tub up to your preferred temperature quickly, whilst you pour out the fizz and chill, watching the sun go down and the stars come out.

(Logs for hot tub use are inclusive of 1 bag per night booked)

Roasting Marshmallows

Enjoy the outdoors for much longer around the fire pit, cook up a meal, whilst telling stories and keeping toasty warm.

Wells

England’s smallest cathedral city is just five miles away. The name derives from the three wells dedicated to St Andrew, one is in the Market Place where an outdoor market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays (it was first established in 1136 AD!), and two are in the grounds of the moated Bishop’s Palace and the magnificent Wells Cathedral.

The Cathedral has a strong claim to be the most beautiful in all England with a wonderful West Front featuring about 300 medieval statues and its unique scissor arches supporting the main tower. The Vicar’s Close, originally built to house members of the still famous choir, is the only complete medieval street in England.

Being so picturesque means that Wells is a popular location for shooting movies, most notably “The Canterbury Tales”, “The Golden Age” with Cate Blanchett as Elizabeth I, “The Libertine” with Jonny Depp as the notorious rake the Earl of Rochester, and “Hot Fuzz” with Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. The city has a wealth of cafes, boutiques and independent shops, plus four supermarkets (including a Waitrose for special picnic treats). There are plenty of pubs, excellent restaurants, a nightclub, cinema and leisure centre. Wells also hosts one of the UK’s best illuminated carnivals, held in November.

Plenty of foot paths.
No local bus stops as we are in the country

Maesbury Castle

A short walk from the hut, on the hilltop behind you. It’s an Iron Age hill fort that’s 950ft above sea level. The Somerset Levels, at the foot of the hill, are marginally below sea level, so the views south and west are spectacular – they include Glastonbury Tor, the Quantock Hills, Brent Knoll and the Bristol Channel beyond. The views to the north and east are pretty special too. That’s because it was a boundary fort between the Romano-British Celts and West Saxons during the period 577- 652 AD, and they needed to see who was coming their way along the two Roman roads, one heading east-west and the other north-south, that intersect nearby (the former runs within a few hundred yards of the ramparts).
