Fully off grid cabin with loft on 3 acres of Hawaiian tropical rain forest, full of beautiful mosaic tile. Property is close to Hilo and on the way to Maku'u market, Pahoa, and Kalapana beaches. There is queen size bed in the sleeping loft and another futon available in the living room. This cabin is blissfully technology free (no wifi).

The space

This open, artistic space is full of beautiful mosaic tile and lots of windows looking into the forest. Cooking and hot water are propane; electric is all solar. Water is rain catchment.

Interaction with guests

Owner is available on adjacent property, but prefers to give guests space.

Other things to note

Solar power allows enough power to charge general electronics, but not enough for those that generate heat, such as hair dryers, irons, etc.

Please be aware, as this property is in the rain forest, you may see bugs and rodents. Pest control measures are in place, but are not 100%. Please keep all food in the refrigerator or completely covered as to not attract them.

There are also many animals in the jungle and on the property that could possibly make noise: frogs, wild birds, domestic birds including peacocks, cats and dogs.

Also, as everywhere in Hawaii, there are mosquitoes. Please close doors and wear insect repellent outdoors, to minimize exposure. The East side of the Big Island has a lot of rain and humidity; please pack to stay dry.

Please keep this in mind when booking. Thank you!

This is a very unique structure standing in the woods. I love the surrounding nature environment. The room is open to the fresh air, so it make sweet dreams. Indeed it is like living in a dream world: at night we can look up the sky in the room, and saw brightest stars blinking above the dark forest, and every morning we were greeted by beautiful peacocks walking by the front door... there are so much more, it is a wonderful nature loving experience. Although we didn't have a chance to meet the host in person, we communicated with her very well through emails and texts, the room is clean, and the house instructions are very clear. Over all we enjoyed the stay.

The place is really nice and the location is great but when I turned up to no linen and towels - an unprepared Airbnb with a significant cleaning fee, I messaged Tylea but had no response. It wasn't until I called that I got a reply but it was too late to arrange linen and towels so u had to sleep on the mattress protector for the first night. The communication between the hosts and I, and what seemed to be the hosts themselves, was sadly lacking.

Visitors should be aware there is no lock on the door to the cabin. This made us nervous about leaving belongings such as money and passports behind, and unsettled to sleep at night. Although other reviews - as well as the host- warned about noise, the noise was much louder than expected. We could not sleep and left after one night although paying for two.

Great place if you enjoy off-the-grid/glamping experiences. Mara greeted us when we arrived and was very sweet. Fell asleep to the sound of rain + coqui frogs every night. There were a few geckos in the bungalow but they did not bother us. Be careful with using too much electricity. Overall a fun, unique experience.

Perfect getaway and beautiful home. Location is great and it was a wonderful experience.

A truly unique place. Everything has been done for you to feel that you are in the jungle. Most Windows are insect screens letting in jungle sounds. Every morning chickens and peacocks comes by to say good morning. There was enough Hot water even for three persons. There were the unavoidable 2-3 small cute lizards inside the hut. It wasn't nescecary to use any bug spray. You get the tropical rainshowers every Night. So the hut is very humid. Mara is very helpful and easy to communicate with.

Tylea's place is out of the world. You are actually in the middle of the woods in some sense and it is a true off the grid place. Its a very big place and in its two beds a family of four. The bed on the top would be a great one for kids. There are a lot of geckos around the home but they don't cause any harm to you. And a lot of chicken in the back. The house has a lot of glass so be prepared for a ton of light in the morning. And also be prepared for all insect and animal sounds in the night. It is one of an experience and would highly recommend any one who wants to have a whole house for themselves in the woods. There is no WiFi at this home so if you do not have a data connection on your phone be prepared to write down directions before hand. Try coming early in the day
