Sycamore Retreat is far enough away to provide you a true country experience while offering access to great cities and towns. Savor the beauty, and quiet of nature while knowing that at any moment you can go enjoy live music in Austin, dine on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, or climb Enchanted Rock. Our place is good for solo adventurers, creatives who want to write, paint or photograph, as well as good folks who simply want to enjoy a day or a week in a peaceful natural setting.

The space

In the large room available there are three separate 9' by 10 foot spaces. Each space has a twin size captain's bed with chest of drawers underneath, a small desk, an open closet for hanging clothes and storing bag and book shelves.

The guest spaces are enclosed by walls on three sides with a privacy curtain on the fourth side.

If there is a second guest, we will provide a twin air mattress or massage table for them.

The toilet is separate from the bath/shower room and there is an extra sink available in a common area.

Full kitchen is available in main section of the house.

Summertime note: During the heat of summer there are small scorpions that occasional come in to search for water. They are about an inch and a half. Their sting hurts but is not dangerous. If you always run water in the sink and bath tub before using and shake out your shoes before putting them on, you will not have any trouble from them.

Guest access

Entrance to the sleeping spaces are through a front door which opens into a hallway separating the guests side of the house from the owner's quarters.

Other things to note

Dripping Springs is a 20 minute drive. There are two music venues in town plus a post office, home depot and a large supermarket.

In addition, the property is located in a hilly area with relatively sparse traffic so is idea for the cyclists.

Below the property is a valley bounded by two creeks and a pond. There is also a camping area and a place to BBQ.

On a clear night, stargazing is very good.

Great place! Duncan was a great host. I was able to get to the house driving at night. He gave great directions. Once you make the drive, you’ll know how much of an accomplishment that is. I even forgot my wallet there and he made special arrangements to make sure I got it back the same day. THANKS DUNCAN!

Duncan's place was just as it was described but better. The main house is located on a beautiful area of the hill country and bordered by 2 creeks. There is plenty of nature to explore. At night the songs of the crickets are almost a low roar, a perfect soundtrack for star gazing. The house is clean and modest, and super quiet at night. There are so many interesting books to look at, I would have to return many times even to check them all out briefly, maybe I will.

The space was exactly as described. The country side is beautiful and the environment was very healing for the mind and spirit. Fantastic views of the Milky Way. Lots of natural wildlife. My stay was for work, but when I was not working it was an extremely relaxing spot to recharge my batteries. I highly recommend and definitely plan on staying again.

Duncan was an extremely hospitable host and far exceeded our expectations. This was our first experience in a shared room rental and it was just as we expected. The room was a tad warm for our Michigander blood but aside from that, we had a great experience. We would definitely stay there again if we find ourselves in that area.

After a way too hectic couple of days in the big city up the road (Austin), I needed some place quiet; but not too far away. This AirBnB was perfect for my immediate needs. It's clean and well equipped. As a coastal plain Texan by birth, this dry hilly part of the state has always been special to me. I welcomed the opportunity to explore the area by car and by foot. There is some nice light hiking right out the door. Some of the best parts of Central Texas are very close.

It is the Texas Hill Country - lots of limestone, cedars, and critters - deer, foxes, hawks, and something I heard at night but couldn't identify - a beautiful sound, whatever it was. The bedrooms are three in a row (A, B, and C) down one side of a hallway, partitioned with walls on the sides and curtains in the front (they don't quite close on either end, so suggest un/dressing in the bathroom if you're set on privacy). The ac is a window unit in the middle of the hallway and got the job done on a hot summer night in Texas, but I was even more comfortable with the ac turned off and all the windows opened to catch the cross ventilation. In the worst of a Texas summer, tho, it's probably safer to count on warmish conditions. The beds are on platforms with lots of drawers in them - lots of storage space in the room. #A had a 3" foam mattress on eggshell. It wasn't thick or soft, but then, I sleep on a futon mattress on the floor at home, so I was good with it. Be on the lookout for scorpions. There was one in the bathtub my second night there and I made sure to put my shoes on the bookshelf instead of leaving them on the floor. If that sort of thing bothers you, it's probably better to find other places to visit than the hill country. The kitchen/living room/dining room area - great room, really - is high-ceilinged and attractive, with a small amp and a music stand for those inclined to use such things. A gas stove and oven, ample room in the refrigerator, and plenty of dishes. There might have even been a mic somewhere in the room. Most of the windows in that room don't have screens on them, which would have been nice and helped with cross ventilation. The whole inside of the house was spotlessly clean and smelled fresh. The towels and sheets were clean and the bed made so tight and wrinkle-free I could have bounced a quarter on the sheet. There is one big porch and two small ones, and they could all have used more and better furniture on them, but the views are lovely. A road going down a hill on the property leads to a beautiful creek - a really nice walk. I stayed three nights, dawdled on my last day, and would return in a heartbeat.

This is a great place for the value. As other reviews stated this location is similar to a European hostel. I have stayed in a few hostels so this was just fine with me. The rooms are separated by walls and curtain barriers. The rooms are comfortable and have what you would need (small desk/table, a place to hang cloths, storage areas, etc.). The view from the front porch is amazing. I was not able to visit the rest of the property due to time constants; however, by what the other guests said the property is beautiful. 100% I would and will be staying here again!
