The space

Ukrainian Village was voted America's hottest neighborhood in 2016! Here are a just a few spots to check out. We love them all!

Bite Cafe
[1] Few spots in Chicago do the upscale-diner thing better. Order the pan-roasted ruby red trout.
Black Dog Gelato
[2] Scoop up bizarre but delicious flavors—sesame fig chocolate chip, maple gingersnap—at this gelato haven.

[3] Score hard-to-find blooms such as cockscomb and safflower at this European-style flower shop.
Empty Bottle
[4] Bite Cafe’s hole-in-the-wall neighbor hosts some of the best alt music in the city.
Happy Village
[5] This dive bar lives up to its name: You’ll enjoy $2 to $3 daily beer specials while you bat around a Ping-Pong ball.
Historic Houses
[6] The 1880s workers’ cottages lining Hoyne and Thomas Streets (see map) mark the center of the Ukrainian Village Chicago Landmark District.
Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral
[7] Tour one of the few Louis Sullivan–designed churches in America.

[8] The 1,000-square-foot rooftop garden of this farm-to-table eatery is a perfect spot to soak up the last days of summer.
[9] Prowl this hipster gift store for jewelry, candles, stationery, and more.
Shokolad Pastry & Cafe
[10] This is the place for traditional Ukrainian food and desserts.
Sir & Madame
[11] Brian and Autumn Merritt fill their boutique with men’s and women’s apparel from urban-dandyish lines (Levi’s Vintage, Brooklyn Circus).
Small Bar
[12] Don’t miss the “scratch food”—delectable bites from chef Justin White—or the patio at this craft beer joint.
Sprout Home
[13] Create custom terrariums and more in this way-cool garden shop.
Star Lounge Coffee Bar
[14] Ever dream of iced coffee on tap? Your dream has come true.
Ukrainian National Museum
[15] No one should miss this fascinating cultural gem.

We stayed here 3 nights. The apartment is of great location. It was right on one of the main streets in a beautiful and lively Ukrainian neighborhood. It was close to restaurant, shops and bars. It was a bit further to the Division subway station but walkable. Very close to downtown Chicago! The apartment has its old-house-charm and spacious. Beds were comfy. However the apartment was on the top of the stairs with no elevator. The place could've been cleaner, especially the bathroom. Amenities ran out and was not being refilled. I have bug bites during the stay. It felt a bit like a run-down place.

Nicky's place was great for three of us in town for a wedding. It was clean, centrally located for events in Wicker Park and Humboldt Park and Nicky was helpful and communicative, easily walkable to tons of places, and overall a good value. A few things to note for anyone considering Nicky's place: there's no wifi, which is mentioned at some point and that wasn't too big of a deal for us, but it might be for some. In addition, there was no air conditioning, which in mid-August, was a little rough. We were able to open the windows, which helped, but one bedroom faces Augusta Ave, which is a fairly busy street, all night long, and the street noise with the open window was very noisy all night. Not the end of the world, but worth noting if you are booking in the summer!

It's a clean basic place in a nice neighborhood. There are some serious stairs (would consider elsewhere if not physically capable to climb few flights of stairs ). We did get a hot day and there is no air conditioning...but should only be an issue on hot days. Would stay here again

Our quality of life depends on how well we deal with adversity! Feel positive. Live positive. I grew up in a small costal town in Maine. When I turned 19 I realized that I was a closet wanderer. So I hit the road and covered much of the U.S. and all of Europe. I taught skiing in the Rockies and rode my BMW R65-LS from coast to coast. When I was in Europe I was amazed at how willing people were to open their homes to a total stranger. I had one of my best experiences living with a family in Romania in the Carpathian Mountains. Amazing! I feel this is the best way possible to travel. It's part of why I love Air B&B. Hotel shmotel! Live the life of the area. That's an experience. Now my wandering days are over. I'm rooted in one of the coolest communities I know. Rich with art and spirit. I have two amazing girls that help me garden, can, collect eggs and milk. My partner is a fellow East Coast boy, avid hockey player and my right hand man. I also tour with an ABBA tribute band as well as a Pink Floyd tribute band but don't hold that against me. I hope you like it here half as much as we do!!
