About this listing

Best of both worlds! American/Spanish couple, one a native English speaker and the other a Madrid native. Super-convenient, center-city Madrid location a stone's throw from the royal palace and gardens and just a block off of Gran Vía.

The space

Bright, clean room with comfortable double futon bed available in private home. Large shared bath and eat-in kitchen. An elevator whisks you up to our top-floor "ático" where a large terrace with views of the opera house and cathedral await.

We will be away between July 13 and August 26, so you will have the place to yourselves. We will have a friend meet you to familiarize you with the apartment and neighborhood.

DISCOUNT AVAILABLE if you'd be kind enough to water the plants on the terrace in the evening.

We are a convenient Metro ride from Barajas Airport (one transfer required), which takes approximately 40 minutes from Terminals 1, 2, and 3, and 45 minutes from Terminal 4 (home of Iberia Airlines and OneWorld Alliance partners).

Use of the washing machine is permitted (no dryer available; line dry only). Smoking permitted on the terrace only.

LATE CHECK-IN AVAILABLE: Please note that check-in after 22:00 will incur a E20 fee, payable in cash upon receipt of the keys.

We will respond within 24 hours, however if we are traveling, it may take just a bit longer. We respond to everyone and thank you in advance for your understanding.

Guest access

The entire apartment is available for your use, save for the closets in the bathroom. Guests are welcome to use whatever kitchenware and utensils we have.

Interaction with guests

We are as interactive with our guests as they are comfortable interacting, which has ranged from not a word to recommendations of things to see and do to accompanying guests to museums, bars, or restaurants. We frequently have wine and tapas on the terrace in the warmer months in the evening, in which our guests are welcome and encouraged to join.

Welcome to the center of this vibrant, wonderful, and accommodating city!

You will find we are very easy-going hosts who look forward to learning as much about you and your culture as you may be about life in Madrid. We are proud of our city and are delighted to share our insights and recommendations. Time permitting, we are even happy to join you on part of your expedition.

We share our home in the spirit as roommates, where shared responsibilities, respect of the property, and consideration of each others' time and space is of utmost importance.

CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT. Standard check-in/check-out times are 3pm and 11am, respectively. We are happy to be flexible, however, with regard to your arrival time, and understand that arrivals from the Americas generally happen in the early morning hours. If we have back-to-back renters and are unable to accommodate your early arrival, we will do our best to accommodate your bags until the room is ready. Keep in mind it takes about two hours to turn the room around and clean the common areas. Likewise, if you have a late departure from Madrid, you are welcome to keep your bags with us until it's time for you to depart.

LATE CHECK-IN AVAILABLE: Please note that check-in after 22:00 will incur a E20 fee, payable in cash upon receipt of the keys.

SMOKING. You are welcome to smoke on the terrace. An ashtray is provided.

GUESTS. You are welcome to entertain guests in the apartment (advance notice is appreciated as this is also our workspace), however we ask that common sense prevail. If you "get lucky," good for you; however, two rules: 1) Don't wake us up, and 2) The Emmy better be in its place when the guest leaves.

MEALS. We do not offer breakfast service, however when we are preparing meals or enjoying a glass of wine for ourselves, we are happy to share with you. Feel free to help yourself to tea (there's an electric hot water pot) or the stove-top espresso maker at any time you wish.

RECYCLING AND WASTE. We are adamant recyclers! There are three bins next to the clothes washer: left is paper, center is plastic and metal, and right is glass. Organic garbage goes in the chrome can next to the clothes washer. If you have waste that will rapidly become malodorous, kindly bag it and place in the hallway landing; the building staff comes by every day except Sunday to remove organic garbage. If it's really nasty, you can place it in a receptacle on the street.

CLEANING. We provide clean sheets and towels and will tidy the common areas for your arrival. We do not provide hotel-style maid service for your room. If you are staying for an extended period, you may use our vacuum cleaner to tidy your room. We will also provide you with a change of sheets and towels if you are staying for a longer duration. If you have a spill, leave crumbs, or track mud into the apartment, we ask that you clean up after yourself. There is a mop in the kitchen next to the refrigerator.

LONG HAIR. Yes, long hair. We welcome you and whatever hairstyle you choose, from short and sassy to long and silky. However, we've have had to bring the vacuum cleaner and shower drain back from the brink on more than one occasion after being choked by long hair. Please be aware of any hair you may be leaving behind -- e.g. on the floor of your room or in the bathroom -- and take care of its removal and disposal.

Many thanks for entrusting us with your time in Madrid!

We had a great time staying here! The location is central but on a quiet side street very near to everything you need of transport, groceries and city life. The apartment is lovely and funky with a great terrace full of plants and well equipped kitchen. The room is cosy and clean with a large window. All in all a perfect place to stay! Even late check in was not a problem.

Very good persons, very nice and lovely. They answer our questions and give us all informations. The flat is the place to be to visit plazas and monuments at Madrid by foot or by tube.

Michael's apartment is wonderful! It is close to everything, mere minutes from public transportation and only a short walk to the Plaza Mayor. He had tons of great suggestions and was always willing to point out more fun sights in Madrid. We would definitely stay here again!

Michael and Miguel are exceptional hosts! Before we arrived Michael sent a great list of recommendations, and we visited almost all of them. Their space is clean, well decorated, and the terrace is such a lovely bonus! We had a drink with them one night and had great some conversations. Michael also went to the trouble of making a reservation at Maricastaña for us since we didn't have international phone access, and it was our favorite dinner. They so enhanced our first trip to Madrid, and I would recommend anyone stay here in a heartbeat!

I'm a US expat who enjoys welcoming people from around the world. I respect guest privacy but also welcome guests to join for libations and good conversation.

I was raised in a cow town south of Buffalo, NY, lived in NYC for 20 years and just outside NYC in South Norwalk, CT for the three years prior to my big leap to Spain. I moved to Madrid in January, 2011. I go back to the US frequently for business and to visit friends and family.

My schooling was in music (MM from Manhattan School of Music); I specialize in branding and communications, mostly for companies in Silicon Valley or otherwise in the tech sector. I was with MTV Networks in NYC for 13 years, where my last position was VP Digital for the cable networks Nick at Nite and TV Land. I am a commercial aviation nut and love to travel.

When I can get there, I enjoy a home I've co-owned for several years on the tip of Cape Cod, just outside of Provincetown.
