After many, many hours of travel from the US, and one little leg of the journey to The Nelson Coastal Barnstay left to go, we couldn't wait to finally be still. We were pooped! But when we turned onto the gravel path up the gentle hill, the gardens and farmland rolling off in all directions, we immediately felt renewed with an indescribable breath of life. We were initially greeted by Raymond and Stanley, the family Alpacas, and then by Dudley, the potbelly pig. Then out the house came David with a big smile on his face and a warm welcome. After a brief tour and chat we settled in to our rustic digs which were quaint, clean, and perfect for the simple life. No frills, no fuss, but all the essentials, and even some non-essentials like fresh flowers and lemons on the table from their garden. We were just two but there is ample room for a cozy-minded family of 6. After a quick cleanup we drove 15 minutes north to the nearest town center and did some shopping for our two night stay. We used the kitchen and the grill both breakfast and dinner which were more than adequate. And the local New World supermarket had everything you could expect, including a tourist card to get the discounted savings. We didn't see much of David during our stay - we were in and out and just didn't cross paths. And though he and his partner live there I can't imagine one would feel encumbered by their presence. We enjoyed our privacy for a much needed recharging of the batteries after alot of travel and a day hike into Abel Tasman (only about 1 hour away). Definitely a great location for accessing Abel Tasman. The icing on the cake is by far the walk along the grassy cliffs to the ocean which is right along the back of the property. The views are sensational -- bring a camera and go at sunset and you will have a memory for a life time! We could not recommend this accommodation more and we wish we could have stayed but had to move on to Marlborough for wine (the road trip was fantastic and I'd highly recommend it). We would go back there in a heartbeat though - it was a perfect start to our honeymoon. Do not miss this wonderful barnstay!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was just what we were hoping for in a rustic place, including farm animals and a sunset that we could watch with a glass of wine without having to get off the couch :) The location is superb and central to getting around from Nelson to Abel Tasman. Highly recommend anyone staying here to take the walk down to the beach from the property. We enjoyed the area enough to add another night on at the last minute, where David and Gill were gracious to extend our stay. Lovely caring hosts that made our stay comfortable and warm.

David was very friendly, welcoming and informative - much appreciated after a long drive. The accommodation was exactly what we were after: quiet, rustic but very comfortable with all the mod cons, character and charm. The location is central and easy to get to and will definitely request to stay here again. High recommended.

David was a really nice host. Right at the beginning he offered us to give some advice what to see around there. The farm is a wonderful place to spend your holiday between the Abel Tasman Park and Nelson. All the rooms were really tidy and clean and we enjoyed the beautiful sunsets every evening while having our dinner outside. We spend a great time there and we recommend this accommodation! Thank you very much!

This was a great stay. The barn is very spacious, well equipped and very comfortable. The outdoor patio and porch is a great place for a glass of wine at the end of the day to watch the sun set over the mountains. Karen is a wonderful warm host. She is very pleased to show you their small sustainable property. The pigs, George and Dudley do a find job of recycling and the Alpacas make the mountain pastoral scene even more picturesque. The water taxi for the Abel Tasman coastal hike is about 1/2 hour thru town and out a very twisty road. Jester's is just down the street which you shouldn't miss for a lunch and a beer. It closes at 5:00 so dinner was not an option for us. Really delightful.

The Coastal Barnstay is a very nice house in the most charming surroundings you can think of. There are pigs, alpacas and lots of other fauna and flora all around the place. The house is very well equiped with everything you need. And it is clean and orderly. The Short's is a very lovely couple. Helpfull i every way and easy to communicate with. We will recommend the Barnstay to everyone!! Regards Lars

We spent the first two nights of our honeymoon here and couldn't have been happier. David and Gil were incredibly friendly hosts and had fresh flowers from their garden around the barn cottage when we arrived. The views from living room and bedroom were so lovely to wake up to and we loved our walk out behind the house to the coast and along the beach from there. We couldn't believe that was right behind their house! Thanks so much for your lovely welcome to New Zealand's beautiful South Island!

David and Gill have both travelled widely in the past, but have lived here for over 25 years. They both work part time, David works in various roles from marketing, landscaping or driving plus many voluntary hours for community projects from bike trails, footpaths and coastal planting projects. Gill now works as a part time midwife in the local community. Their children have all grown up and left home and they have plenty of space for visitors.

On their 5 acre property they have 2 self contained holiday cottages.
