Quite frankly, Gaucin is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is a classic Andalusian pueblo blanco ("white village") slung like a hammock between two peaks.

You’ll love the stunning views of the Rock of Gibraltar, the Med, and Morocco; the Moorish styling of our house; the pink sunsets; and the eagles, swifts and vultures overhead.

The beach is a 30-minute drive down the smooth new road; the town pool, and great restaurants and tapas bars are just a few minutes’ walk away.

The space
Our house is a three-storey, three-bedroom, two-bathroom town house with a terrace. The entrance hall greets you in classic Moorish style. The bedrooms are on the lower floors to keep them cool in the summer. There is one en-suite bedroom with twin beds/double on the ground floor, and two double bedrooms with a family bathroom on the first floor.

The kitchen, living room and terrace are on the top floor and have breath-taking views. The kitchen is modern and well-equipped, and the whole house was styled and decorated by a professional interior designer.

There is air conditioning available on the top floor for a small additional charge (electricity in Spain is hugely expensive - please ask us about rates if you would like to use it). In winter the house is heated by a log-burner and plug in electric radiators, and the air conditioning unit on the top floor provides heat to this room in winter.

Other things to note
Our street is a quiet, no-through road with parking nearby. You can drive to the front door for loading and unloading.

There are several grocery stores stocking most things you'll need and a small supermarket. BUT all food shops are shut on Sunday! If you arrive on Sunday bring food from the coast. In a Sunday food emergency, you can buy basics at the Gasolinera ('Gaso'). The nearest store is about 5 minutes walk from the house. You will always find a tapas bar open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (please note, this can vary in the depths of winter).

The restaurants and tapas bars and restaurants are mostly clustered in the centre of the village, again about 5 minutes walk, with a few others scattered around the edges.

Also about 5 minutes from the house is Gaucin's very nice, communal swimming pool, open July and August. However there is little here in the way of seating or shade. If you want a day by the pool, look at the Banu Rabbah hotel in Benarabba nearby. For a small charge you can use their pool, loungers, and have meals, drinks, etc.

Gaucin is about one km from end to end, so that is the likely extent of any village walk. The village is on the side of a mountain, so expect to climb short hills or walk down steep slopes within the village.

WIFI - we both work from home, are heavy data users and are rarely offline. We are very happy with our internet package which allows streaming, however this is a mountain village and outages do occasionally occur. FYI there is a good 3G / 4G signal in the village and house, depending on your personal contract.

Gaucin is a typical Spanish village - we have our fair share of donkeys, dogs, goats, and chickens. There can be quite a cacophony of animal noises so do come prepared for barking, braying and crowing! We don't hear these noises anymore, but if you think this might disturb your sleep, particularly in summer with windows open, we suggest you bring earplugs.

Where you’ll be

Gaucín, Andalucía, Spain

From our house you look down a beautiful, unspoiled 30-mile valley to Gibraltar, the Mediterranean, and the Rif mountains in Morocco. (Gibraltar and Jebel Musa in the Rif are what the Greeks thought of as the Pillars of Hercules.)

The village itself is crested by a Roman fort which was expanded by the Moors - with incredible 360-degree views. The Genal Valley is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and you can see why.

Gaucin is one of 15 beautiful pueblos blancos in the Genal Valley - many of which are linked by great walks. Ronda is our nearest large town - 40 minutes drive - with its deservedly famous bridge, old town, bull ring, and beautiful Town Hall Square, great for drinks and people watching, and for the Semana Santa parades.

Sotogrande and Marbella offer seductive glamour on the nearby Costa del Sol - both are under an hour away. Our nearest beaches and chiringuito beach bars are about 35 minutes drive, in and around Estapona and Sabinillas.

The watersport Mecca of Tarifa - with truly stunning beaches is about 90 minutes by car. From here you can catch a boat to Tangiers, arrive in time for lunch, and be back in the village in time for bed.

Bolonia (with a beautiful, windswept beach, sand dunes, and well-preserved Roman ruins explained by a stylish modern visitor's centre) is a couple of miles further on from Tarifa.

Flights arrive at Malaga (90 minutes) or Gibraltar (75 minutes), both of which are definitely worth a visit in their own right.

Cadiz (great seafood) and Sevilla (the wonderful Alcazar and cathedral) are both reachable as day trips - a couple of hours each way, and even better if you stay overnight. You can even catch a train to Granada from Gaucin's station (but you have to drive down the mountain to get to the station).

Our house is in an unspoiled pueblo blanco (white village) in a UNESCO biosphere reserve. It makes a great base for exploring Andalusia, including other pueblos blancos, and the coast.

Most of all, people come to Gaucin for the great hiking, horse-riding, and bird-watching; it is a natural paradise!

My work: Business coach
I'm obsessed with: Design
I teach design, and Calum is a writer and speaker on artificial intelligence. Our favourite things are history, hiking, windsurfing, and food, so Gaucin is the perfect place for us! I love Moroccan style, and being so close to North Africa has a strong influence design (and food!) here. The hiking/walking is world-class, easy to access, and unspoiled. There are ruins and caves, castles and alcazars, and lots of museums to visit. We love cooking and local ingredients make cooking at home and eating out a culinary adventure!
