Earthy Dwelling is our humble endeavour to rediscover our connect with nature. We have handcrafted this abode in our forest garden by working with the local artisans and applying the regenerative principles of permaculture. It is a blend of the age-old tradition of earth houses using local resources with some comforts and amenities of a modern day holiday home.

If this dwelling is booked out you can also check out our new mud dwellings by searching for 'Tieedi Air Dwelling' in AirBnB.

The space
Our place is part of a forest garden project where we are trying to revive a neglected acre of land into a forest that's bursting with life. So even though you are connected to the highway, you would get to experience the joy of being amidst brooding trees, chirping birds and gurgling rivers. You can find your own solitude-spot in the forest or mingle with backpackers and travellers from across the world and share experiences and travel stories. The earth house opens to our private rivulet and is surrounded by cardamom plantation and old forest trees.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to explore all nooks and corners of our forest garden. They can search and discover our TIEEDI waterfall or bask in the sunlight under a large canopy of magnolia trees or dip their toes in the gurgling mountain river.

Other things to note
1) We love food and we will serve you the tastiest of the local delicacies that either our organically grown in our vegetable gardens or sourced from local organic farmers. The meal charges for organic vegetarian meals are as follows:
a) Breakfast: Rs. 150/-
b) Lunch: Rs. 250/-
c) Dinner: Rs. 250/-

*Rs. 50 extra for non-vegetarian meals.

You have the option to earn your meals for the whole day with us by volunteering for 6 hours/day in one of our projects. You also have the option of eating out from any of the local restaurants that are walk-able distance (100m away) from our place.

2) Pls note that the earth house is connected to the motorable road by a stone-paved pathway through our private forest. It is a 5 minutes hike from the main road. We will take care of transporting your luggage, however we expect you to be fit enough to be able to walk this trail to the dwelling.

3) We are on a quest to create a plastic free environment, hence the guest would be requested to use only the designated trash bins for disposing their organic and inorganic waste.

Our neighborhood or '8 Mile village' is an interesting place as it is at crossroad of a small farming hamlet which is slowly integrating with the modern economy. There are shops that dot the main road with choicest offering of local cuisine and indigenous fruits and vegetables (locally produced) and there are trails that take you away from the main road and introduce you to happy-go-lucky villagers who would warmly welcome you into their humble abodes for a cup of tea. For nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts there are plenty of forest trails for running, cycling and hiking as the Senchel Wildlife Reserve is just 30 mins hike from our place.

Also, one of the best places in the world to view the sunrise, Chattakpur, is just above TIEEDI. You can either hike to the place or hire a vehicle to drive you there before the sunrise. People have described this sunrise, where you get to see Kanchenjunga mountain slowly bathed by the rising sun in an orange hue, as 'heart-stopping' and 'i-almost-cried' moment.

A grounded wanderer...literally! Since the last couple of years I have been working on a permaculture project in Darjeeling where we are trying to revive a plastic-waste-ravaged acre of land into a thriving food forest. Permaculture has been a guiding light for me in this quest and I am glad that I bumped into this concept while backpacking and wandering in the remote mountain hamlets of the Himalayas. Hence, from wandering and discovering remote getaways I have grounded myself to gardening and foresting full time. One of the projects here is our experiments with natural building techniques where we leave no carbon footprint. We invite you to stay in our forest garden if you would like to experience living in the lap of nature. No televisions, no gadgets, no fancy lighting, no fast wifis but just good ol sitting-by-the-fireplace and sharing travel stories from around the world to experiencing the local food and culture. If you would prefer some lonesome time you can also indulge in some forest therapy by walking down to our woods and sitting by our waterfall.
