Great location

Gaucín's astounding location makes it probably the most spectacularly beautiful, un-spoilt white village of Andalucia. Breathtaking views south to Gibraltar across the Straights and into the mountains of Morocco, north into the Sierra de Ronda and the greatest cork forest in Europe. With many excellent tapas bars & shops just a stroll away the unique Moorish style and comfort of “Casita Mosaica” set in it’s exotic garden and magical swimming-pool is the perfect place to explore the area from.

The space
Casita Mosaica was inspired by a gorgeous little building in the Tangier Kasbah, Morocco; we designed an open plan layout internally making the house very light and spacious yet intimate and romantic, it has the advantage of a fabulous exotic roof terrace with captivating views from the top of the tower.

The blue gate from the street brings you into Casa Mosaica garden; (CASA Mosaica is the name of the entire property which includes the converted warehouse in the garden with a 2 bedroom rental apartment on the ground floor and the owners apartment on the first floor as well as the CASITA /tower in the garden).

The Casita has a charming enclosed private patio garden under a mature palm tree, and from here you enter the Casita through the cedar door. The entrance hall has a stunning mosaic floor and opens onto the double height kitchen and dining room; there are doors to the patio for outdoor eating under the palm, where there are also sun-beds. The comfortable sitting room has a wood-burning stove and central heating for cooler months, fast wireless connection, TV with some European channels, a DVD player and selection of DVDs and novels to borrow as well as audio cables to speakers.
Upstairs the bedroom has a king size bed (1.50m x 2.00m) and pretty windows looking out over the garden. The sunny bathroom is fitted with a tadelakt bath, hand-made Moroccan brass basin and a pretty mosaic design in the shower.

The terrace at the top of the tower has a comfortable day bed, a small kitchen and a drinks fridge. Stunning views towards Cortes de la Frontera and the Alcornocales cork forest in one direction and the tiled roofs of Gaucin in the other, it is a magical place to catch the last sun of the day, relax with a bottle of wine or sleep under the stars on a hot July night.

Where you’ll be

Gaucín, Andalucía, Spain

Casa Mosaica is perfectly situated to enjoy all that vibrant Gaucin has to offer; within easy walking distance of the many delightful tapas bars and shops and with free parking in the street outside, yet behind the high white wall a haven of peace and tranquility in the scented garden and a lovely large pool to cool down and relax in.

Gaucin is one of the most spectacularly beautiful white mountain villages of Andalucia. The location is astounding: white houses ranged along a lofty ridge framed by craggy peaks, vultures and eagles wheeling overhead surrounded by miles of sun dried hills.
To the north, a back drop of the weathered limestone formations of the Serrania de Ronda, and to the south sweeping views across the Rio Genal valley to Gibraltar and across the Straights into the Rif Mountains of North Africa.
With a population of 2000, perched 626 meters above sea level, it has a fascinating history. From the Arab word “strong Rock" , Gaucin is perched on the crest of the Sierra del Hacho and was once a major Roman settlement.
The village was once a centre for brandy and tobacco smuggling bandaleros, but these days the centre of the village with its pretty tangle of narrow twisting streets and whitewashed houses is the inspiration for a sizeable artistic community and a combination of traditional and unspoilt Andaluz and modern amenities with plenty of bars and some really good restaurants serving delicious Mediterranean cuisine and fabulous and inexpensive tapas.
For anyone interested in botany, bird life, hiking and riding there is plenty to discover in the area with several National Parks nearby including "Los Alcornocales" the largest, oldest and greatest cork forest in Europe, is on the doorstep. Ronda, Seville, Granada and Jerez, famous for Sherry, Spanish horses and flamenco are all near by. As well as some of the best golf courses in Europe, the Costa del Sol and the beautiful Costa del Luz.

I moved permanently to enchanting Gaucín from life in London as an interior decorator in 1999. Growing up speaking Spanish, adoring Pedro Almodovar films and Classical Spanish guitar music I found myself in heaven! We took 5 years to develop & establish our lovely home “Casa Mosaica” whilst starting a business designing and fabricating “Roman” mosaics based in Tangier, Morocco. We travelled between continents, collecting ideas for interiors, gardens and pool design as well as buying rugs and lanterns, then embellishing our home with them as well as installing many mosaics throughout the property, no surface was safe, what a life for a creative home maker! I now spend half the year in Gaucín and have moved out of London to Somerset for the other half of the year. I am passionate about Andalucia and the beautiful mountain area surrounding Gaucín; the people are warm and friendly, the food is excellent and affordable, the Moorish history is fascinating and there are many wonderful, traditional festivals still celebrated in the area throughout the year as well as outstanding, un-spoilt countryside, hiking, riding, cycling, golf and bird watching PLUS the Mediterranean is only 30 mins drive away. Life could not be better, come and have a taste…..

During your stay

These days I divide my time between Somerset and Gaucin. My apartment is upstairs in Casa Mosaica, I do not use the pool when guests are renting although you may see me in the garden. I am very happy to help guests, usually inviting them for a drink on my terrace when I am there. I have provided a house book full of essential insider local information on getting the best from the area after 20 years experience.. When I am not there I am quick to answer my mobile and I have a local maintenance man as well as the Spanish family, gardener and cleaning lady who speak some English and are always happy to help. I often have special offers available for longer stays. Please make a request.
