The space
Nestled on the shore of Loch na Cairidh in the hamlet of Ard Dorch on the Isle of Skye, Oir na Mara - Gaelic for Edge of the Sea - offers unrivalled views of rural Scotland across the water. From the volcanic cone of Dun Caan rising high above the island of Raasay to the deer that gather on the point of Scalpay opposite the house, Oir na Mara will captivate you from the moment you arrive.

Positioned away from the road, down on the edge of the loch, the sheltered position brings tremendous opportunities to catch views of the seals, sea otters, dolphins and seabirds that can frequent the area as well as an occasional glimpse of a white tailed sea eagle.

Lovingly restored from an ageing croft house in the year 2000, Oir na Mara has been furnished with a modern element to bring the most from its fantastic location. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the breathtaking views while underfloor heating keeps the building warm and dry on those cooler days.

The shore infront of Oir na Mara is the perfect habitat for a huge variety of animals. Seals are a common sight in the water while occasionally sea otters can be spotted in the sea or coming ashore infront of the house. White tailed sea eagles appear from time to time in the skies above us as well as a vast variety of sea birds such as the resident heron. Dolphins and even a whale or two have been known to pass us by!

A private carpark down a hill from the main road provides the first glimpse of the property and 5 steps down the hill get you to the front door.

The rocky coast is only a few metres away and is accessible from the house via 5 stone steps. Perfect for sea kayakers, open water swimmers and watersports enthusiasts alike. Just remember to be safe and have a spotter present when entering the water

We first visited Skye over 20 years ago, staying with friends who lived on the island opposite to our house now. It was love at first sight and we were captivated by the scenery and how friendly everyone locally was. With 20 years of visits at all times of year and some great memories that will last with us forever, we decided to buy our own place on the island. We wanted to restore the run-down cottage that laid near to the shore to something more deserving of its location and set about working to make it something we were proud of. Oir na Mara was born. Once we'd completed the work, we were able to focus on the house next door that we always intended to build and that is where we reside now, leaving Oir na Mara available for rent so other people can enjoy the breathtaking features that it brings.
