The ancient town of Shas, was the center of former episcopate bearing the same name, in wich, even today , there are remains of Roman and Byzantine cultural heritage witnessing its ten-century long duration and historical importance.The oldest archeological findings from this area, belong to the prehistoric age. Shas was mentioned for the first time in the papal bull of the pope Alexander II,in 1067,as an Episcopal town. A legend says that Shas had 365 churches, the same as the number of days in a year.Most of the churches were built in the XIIth century ,and today among the ruins one can recognize the foundations of two biggest ones, St.John’s and St.Mary’s .
