Cottage on the Hill at Harmony Hollow is surrounded by nature and quiet in beautiful Red Lick Valley. Hike 250 acres of deep woods in pure solitude, go rock hunting in the creek or mushroom hunting in the hills, watch horses on the property peacefully grazing, enjoy the view from the fish pond, or just take solace in the peace and quiet of the cottage. 1 night minimum on weeknights, 2 night minimum on weekends.

The space

Cottage on the Hill was designed by my mother as her retirement dream home. Our close friend, who also built all our other buildings, built her home to her exact specifications. She filled it with thousands of her beloved books spanning her favorite topics of world religions, history, science, philosophy, and classic fiction and surrounded herself with beautiful views in a quiet, secluded space. A large portion of her library focuses on matriarchal and nature based religion, which may be uncomfortable for guests with a conservative belief system. If you fit this description, our Cottage may not be for you.

While there are a few steps to the porch, the interior is one level and set up for guests with mobility difficulties.

We love to share the beauty and magic of this place!

Guest access

Guests have access to 250 mostly wooded private acres of beautiful hiking and serenity. There are 2 horses and 3 dogs on the farm who like to meet our guests. Our dogs take their job of protecting the property seriously and are free to roam, sometimes howling or barking at night to keep critters away. Our property is not recommended for guests who aren't comfortable with animals, bugs, or wilderness. Trails are not marked and may be impassable in the summer.

Interaction with guests

We live with our two young children in a cabin at the bottom of the hill, far enough away that we can't see the cottage well, but close enough to be available if you need us. We can greet you when you arrive and make sure you have everything to be comfortable or you can go straight to the cottage. We love sharing our experience discovering farm life after years of city living, but we're also very happy to give you the privacy and solitude you need.

Other things to note

This is a farm with horses, dogs, bugs in the summer, and mud in the Spring. We love this lifestyle and we hope you will enjoy it too!

Most of our 250 acres are "deep woods". If you've never hiked outside a state or city park before, it is a unique experience to trailblaze through deep woods. Trails are not well marked and may not be passable in the middle of summer when the woods become overgrown. But during other seasons there is nothing like discovering places no one may have walked in years where no one will cross your path. If you want clearly marked trails there are many in the area we can direct you to (a few listed below)

There is a tv in the cottage but it does not have cable or satellite. There is a blue-ray/DVD player with online streaming apps so you can access your Netflix or Hulu accounts or watch YouTube.

This cabin is a wonderful and relaxing place for city dwellers like us! We were there in May and came back to enjoy the fall colors. The area is rich in ecological wonders with the Knobs and gorges. The cabin is cozy, clean, and has a full kitchen. It's remote and private, but it's close to town with good restaurants and shops. We love the tranquility of the place.

I think you may have picked one of the best weekends for fall colors! I hope we get to enjoy a few more before the cold weather sets in! Looking forward to your next visit. Maybe some homemade banana bread next time? :)

Jay and Vic have a beautiful cabin with everything you need for a relaxing getaway. Communication was excellent and the location was perfect if you enjoy hiking. Very close to the Pinnacles in Berea as well as Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge. Loved having the family dogs greet us every morning. Fantastic stay in Irvine.

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage. It had everything we needed, was very clean, and a great location. We unfortunately didn't get a chance to explore the whole place and visit with the horses etc. but the book collection is very eclectic!

Jay & Vic were so great! The cabin was somehow even better than the pictures and we had an amazing time unplugging. We got to hike with their three dogs along their creek, take a nap in their hammock and enjoy the incredibly diverse library! It was quiet and secluded and exactly what we were looking for. We will definitely tab this one to visit again!

Awww... I'm glad the dogs went with you hiking! It always makes me feel better when they're around and it definitely makes the hike more fun! I also get jealous that they can run up and down the hills so fast while I'm precariously picking out every step :). Thanks for tabbing us and I hope we see you again!

This place is one of the best lodgings I've stayed at! My friends and I came down here for the eclipse weekend and had a wonderful time together in the cabin surrounded by nature. The dogs on the property were extremely friendly and sweet. We sat around the fire singing songs, we cooked together in the lovely kitchen surrounded by a vintage aesthetic, and we took walks around the property and admired the beautiful grazing horses. The cabin is about an hour and a half away by car to the bourbon trail, which was a plus :-) we honestly didn't want to go anywhere because the cabin was the perfect place to hang out. I wish I could buy the place and live there for the rest of my life to be honest :-p

Thank you so much for the kind words and beautiful description! We felt the same about this place, which is why we moved here from Cincinnati. It reminded us of Gatlinburg... but undiscovered! Maybe we should keep it our little secret ;). We hope you enjoyed the eclipse!

Jay & Vic are sharing a real haven by renting out this property. Lounging opportunities are second to none with all the porch and indoor seating options! We were super comfortable in the space as two couples and a 7.5mth baby. Strongly recommend this KY country experience.

The Cottage on the Hill is the perfect get away. The cabin is cozy, quaint, and makes you feel as if you are home. Jay and Vic seem to have thought of everything, with a fully stocked kitchen and any toiletries you could have forgotten. Apart from the cabin, the land that surrounds the area is just gorgeous. We had a great time walking the creeks and looking for red agate. This place is perfect to escape reality, as well as getting outdoors and reacquainted with nature.

Response from Jay & Vic:
Did you find any red agate? It's definitely hard to spot! We're glad you enjoyed your time here and felt like you were at home! Our farm is your farm while you're here!

We have always dreamed of owning property and we both love meeting new people. 10 years ago, while living in Cincinnati, we found a beautiful holler in Eastern KY. This area of Eastern Kentucky is a hidden gem, still to be discovered by tourist traps and developers... an escape t…
